The large inequalities in Chilean society are exposed after a transport fare increase leads to violent protests.  A climate tax and fare increases led to protests against inequality in France. The Chilean pension system does not provide the working lass with adequate pensions on which they can retire. Large inequalities in wealth under the Chilean model are seen as a result of free market principles which were enshrined in the constitution of Chile after the departure of Chilean dictator Pinochet. Some of the free market ideas worked to improve living conditions in Chile, others such as the financing of the pension system are seen as having failed to provide for a secure retirement for workers. some of Chile's success can also be attributed to demand and pricing of copper with Chinese demand in the past, a situation confronting Brazil and Argentina also. In Brazil the problem is just the opposite with politicians having granted extremely liberal pensions leaving little room in the budget for public services including basic sanitation.  There are also inadequacies in education and health care based on these free market principles, which favor certain groups and not society at large. On March 20, reports show that the testing facilities in states in the U.S. have had to set priorities on who gets tested first. High risk areas identified by authorites come first. For this reason Corlado health authorites moved a test centrer in Denver to Telluride a ski community that has been hard hit. In Minnesota health department commissioner identified priorities and limited testing to health care workers, inpatients at hospitals and people in group living facilities. A backlog means tests can take 5 days in Colorado, and Colorado has capacity for 250 tests a day (March 20). Testing was centred first by the U.S. government at the Centre for Disease Control. On reconsideration the state and local authorites, private companies, were allowed to conduct the tests, to speed things up. But local areas in many cases lack supplies or enough test kits and protective gear that is needed. This WSJ report says that the Trump administration is also shifting their strategy to social distancing to contain the outbreak. The federal government says it is aware of shortages in chemicals used in the tests. New York City officials say they have testing capacity for 5000 people per day, and New York State Governor Cuomo says the state can test 6000 people per day. (March 20). ...

The State Department concluded in its studies in August 2011 that the TransCanada Keystone XL pipeline can be operated without causing environmental damage, if operated under strict regulations. A round of public hearings organized by the State Department along the pipeline route from rural Montana to Nebraska and Texas has brought out both supporters and people fearing a spill. U.S. Senators in Nebraska have called for a rerouting out of concerns about the Ogallala Aquifier that lies under the Great Plains. Rural states like Montana see the jobs issue as crucial. Others including Debra Medina, a former candidate for Texas Governor, expressed fears at a rally in Austin that the property rights of landowners would not be respected.

Building the large LNG terminals to get gas in its liquid form from Canada, the US and Qatar, is essential for Europe as it is expected that Russia will cut off gas supplies this winter. Germany needs three large LNG terminals on the Baltic Sea.  About 1.6 million tons of weapons and explosives were dumped into the North Sea and Baltic Sea after World War II. The problem is most acute near Germany as Allied Commanders ordered the destruction of German explosives after the war. All this debris has to be removed before LNG terminals or offshore windfarms can be built as shown in this report in WSJ.

NYT reports from China show how China is handling a complete U Turn on how to handle Covid. Most pandemic restrictions are lifted, and people can now recover at home. A rising number of infections and China is now open to bring in western medicines. It is seen as a boost to the economy. Even the government officials are wondering how to shape the new narrative. It shows the flexibility of the leadership in China and the willingness to learn from new developments in dealing with the pandemic. A similar step was taken by Democrats in the US as they relaxed restrictions in line with new evidence that was coming in with milder strains of the virus.

India's foreign minister S. Jaishankar says a lot has been done at the G-20 meetings in India. He says 95% of the countries agree on the communique put out by the G-20. The idea that peace in Europe can be achieved at G-20 meetings in India is not realistic he says as the G-20 was not designed for this purpose of tackling troublespots like Ukraine. What the G-20 has done is bring countries in Europe and North America together with India to understand the problems stemming from the conflict in Ukraine on food security and from the debt crises in some parts of Asia.

Queen Elizabeth II says in her Easter message to Britain- "Coronavirus will not overcome us."

"We need Easter as much as ever." Remembering the tradition of lighting candles at Easter she said: "As dark as death can be - particularly for those suffering with grief - light and life are greater."

"May the living flame of the Easter hope be a steady guide as we face the future."

This is her first Easter message and comes after her televised address to Britain on Sunday March 5th with its rallying message "we will return."

The settlement with National Association of Realtors will take time to sink in. Now buyers are expected to pay upfront for the help in making the purchase of a house. Prior to this change sellers paid what was called a commission which was baked into the hose price, kind of made less visible. Now that the cost is made visible it can go directly to the payment of the realtor or buyer agent in the form of payment for services rendered such as how much his services cost, how much for a home inspection. The result should benefit home buyers, and mitigate the lack of affordability problem many buyers face today.

Its an amazing sight. The 730 ton steel sphere in Taipei skyscraper 101 with 100 stories is suspended between several floors at the top of the building as a mass damper to take the violent swinging shock of earthquakes. It can cut the building's swinging in an earthquake by 40%. This has saved occupants during this week's earthquake in Taipei. Closed circuit TV footage shows the building hardly moving which is amazing. The technology is displayed openly in this building built in 2004 as the tallest in the world. In addition 380 piles are driven 100 feet into the ground. Taiwan is located in a seismic active zone prone to earthquakes.

DW.com looks at what the Geneva Conventions -that regulate conduct of war, signed in 1949 and with additional Protocols signed in later years- say about the attacks on a nuclear plant. Both Ukraine and Russian Federation have signed the agreement. It forbids the "release of dangerous forces from nuclear plants that can cause severe losses for the civilian population." Russia took control of the nuclear plant at Zaporizhzhia in Ukraine early in the war leading to a situation where the European Union fears it is attempting to weaponize the plant by turning it off the Ukrainian grid. This creates risk that backup cooling systems cannot cool the reactors leading to accidents.

The WSJ merits the gratitude of hundreds of millions of people in South Asia and South East Asia, in Africa and Latin America for its work on 1MDB, and shows at its heart America's people cares about their future. Malaysian government under Mahathir Mohammad revealed recently Malaysian debt was $251 billion or 1 trillion ringitt. WSJ report by Jon Emont warns that Indonesia has too much capital going into mineral resource develooment such as lithium and too little for development of a manufacturing bas as is happening in neighbors India and Vietnam. Indonesia lags far behind in manufacturing and as the supply chain shifts with its aging population there is need for policies that build the kind of infrastructure that is needed for foreign investment in factories in Indonesia that can employ its young people. Emont says just seeing that 60% of young people are employed in the informal sectors such as delivery and  transport is not the policy for a country with a large young demographic.

Aikins points out the change from Mexicans crossing the border to the people from Central America fleeing Guatemala, San Salvador and Nicaragua. More recently people from Venezuela as entire states become dysfunctional, either from gang violence and lack of law and order in central America or in Venezuela from crippling inflation and economic collapse. It is a problem that America as a whole not just this or that party can resolve, by changing the entire system of immigration the way the European Union has already done and by keeping migrants in their own countries by bringing these countries into a state of stable economic growth, and making them resilient to economic and political shocks.

This means says this WSJ column that the central bank for Europe, the ECB, can continue to raise interest rates to fight inflation. As Fed chairman Jay Powell pointed out at the Brookings Institution recently out of control inflation poses a major risk for upward mobility in American society. This is a risk that exists in both the US and Europe. In this sense 2023 is a critical year for the Fed and the ECB, for Lagarde and for Jay Powell, to bring it back under control.

Chancellor Scholz has a fall while running in Potsdam. The German chancellor's office puts out this picture of Scholz so that people can get used to how he would look for the next couple of days. Scholz has taken up rowing at the age of 50 and he says one of his regrets is that he had not done so earlier. He heads a younger more fitness and health oriented government than the one before him, and one that has put first and foremost the idea of dignity of the German worker and his family, an idea he shares with president Biden in the US for the American worker and family.

The Renault Duo, Citroen Ami, Swiss Microlino, Swedish Luvly, are electric vehicles for 1-2 passengers made at prices from $8000 for the Ami to $16000 for the Microliner. The Microliner has a range of 150 miles and max speed of 55mph. By 2030 about $100 billion of these small electric vehicles could be on the road compared to $3 billion in 2023.

Asymptomatic people infected by coronavirus are acting as spreaders of the coronaavirus making it more essential than ever that everyone wear masks. This is a widely accepted practice in Asia- wearing masks to prevent others from getting a virus. This now needs badly to become the practice in the U.S. and Europe. The longer it is delayed the worse the crisis can get and the longer it takes to eradicate it. Even low grade cotton masks are useful as is the practice in Asian countries. It is now part of the new guidelines of the Centers for Disease Control in the U.S. This needs to be adopted as safe practice everywhere.

Ohio senator J.D. Vance is chosen by Trump as his running mate. He came to know Trump Jr. in 2021 and the two are shown to be close. He was elected Ohio Senator with Trump's endorsement. His thinking and style is similar to the former president which may have led to his choice over Marco Rubio of Florida and Borghum of North Dakota. How well known is he in Michigan or Wisconsin, and how much support can he draw in those two states with his energy on working class issues when Michigan and Wisconsin have Democratic governors who are strong on working class issues and union support, remains to be seen.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul halts a congestion pricing plan for New York City saying it would have unintended consequences and hinder New York's economic recovery. It would make it harder for cost of living for families after the effects of the pandemic. The plan was to charge $15 fee to enter New York Manhattan south of 60th Street. It was seen as a way to support a financially strapped MTA subway authority. Hochul said- "Let's be real. $15 may not sound a lot to someon who has the means but it can break the budget of a hardworking middle class household."

The  Washington Post review of archived radio transmissions in this report suggests a possible cause of the Palisades Los Angeles wildfires- reignition from a previous fire on a mountain ridge just 6 days prior on New Year's Eve. That fire was knocked out only to reignite. Smoldering fire can stay in wood and underground only to reignite in very windy conditions even for 10 days. In though very windy conditions were expected LA Fire Department lacked the resources to stay on it for a few days - in what the Washington Post citing the LAFD says is in a stretch of Temescal Ridge in the Santa Monica mountains.

The DW's Ines Pohl interviews Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina as she begins a fourth term as prime minister. Hasina says "everybody should take a break so we can accomodate the younger generation."  Hasina says she will not run again. 

As the economy continues growth at 6-7 percent Hasina emphasizes basic needs of food security, housing, health, education, job opportunities. "Every human being wants a better life we have to insure that", says Hasina.

A big change for Hasina is in girl's education. "What I have done is that education for girls is totally free up to the 12th grade and that we provide a stipend to them." Hasina sees the culture change into making parents rethinking girl's education as a big change, believing that the girl can earn her own money as a good thing when she is married. It is a change she believes will continue to change Bangladesh society.

Covid is growing at 3% a day, with the R ratio at between 1.0 and 1.2 for the second week in a row, says the UK Health Ministry.
