The Case-Shiller Index shows a decline in housing prices of 4.2% in the first quarter of 2011. This follows a drop of 3.6% in the fourth quarter of 2010. Of the 20 cities in the index, 12 were at a post-bubble low in March 2011. The yearly drop for Minneapolis was 10%. Only Washington D.C. showed a rise in March and over the year. Housing prices are at 2002 levels. The Center for Economic and Policy Research estimates a decline of 6-8% for the rest of 2011. The excess supply of housing was estimated at 1.8 million units in April 2010 by the financial Blog Calculated Risk, which used 2010 census data for the estimate calculations. The Conference Board consumer confidence index fell to 60.8 from a revised 66 in April 2011.

Republicans he says are making the same mistake as Democrats by rushing this through Congress. There is no broad consensus on whether all Americans should be entitled to health care as in Europe and Japan for their citizens, and health care is priced in a way to make it expensive for the state to provide- until the twin problems are solved by creating a new culture in the U.S. that sees things differently, politicians will come up with their own plans based on their interests and which groups they serve.

Mort Kunstler, a painter in Long Island, has a more historically correct painting of George Washington crossing the Delaware River on Christmas Day 1776 to attack Hessian forces in the Battle of Trenton. The crossing was made on a 50 foot flatboat ferry and not in a smaller boat as shown in the classic painting- the 1851 portrait, "Washington Crossing the Delaware," by Emmanuel Leutze. Leutze did not have good access to historical detail when he created the painting in Germany. Leutze's painting is the most asked-about painting at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It shows Washington in a heroic posture. The new painting by Kuntsler is smaller, more realistic in details, and was commissioned by Thomas Suozzi. Suozzi was inspired by David McCullough's book "1776," and says Washington's decision to rally his troops with a victory during an especially bleak period is something that impresses him most. It will be displayed at the New York Historical Society in Manhattan.

Women have one of three positions in senior management in the federal government compared to one of six in corporate management. Women make up 41% of management positions at the Government Accountability Office, a federal agency that has women friendly policies including family friendy culture, daycare site at the Washington headquarters, flexible relocation policy, telework policies, and advancing women to positions even as they balance their professional and personal lives such as needs of children. It is not necessary to work 70-80 hours a week to advance to senior positions as in law firms. Kernza is a new kind of grain from wheatgrass that is environmentally friendly being tried out by Kansas farmers in the US. A single seed of Kernza grain grows into a plant that provides grain year after year without the need for costly fertilizer, more water and energy. It forms deep roots that store carbon, and grows alongside other crops and provides wildlife habitat.  In this report from Washington Post an artisan baking company is shown baking Kernza and wheat grains bread.

Climate change makes Kansas summers much hotter and drier, and makes rainstorms more intensive, says this report. Land Institute ecologists say traditional farming is carbon intensive and alternatives are needed. Kansas had some of the richest soil in America say ecologists, but it is being degraded at a rapid rate. As America's breadbasket state a lot needs to be done to enrich and restore Kansas agricultural land.

Two parts per million of lead in cinnamon is the maxiumum that is considered normal. Five parts per million of lead in cinnamon is considered bad for health. Children are particularly affected by lead contaminated products. High lead contamination in applesauce product pouches lead to recalls by the US FDA recently. In the case of the cinnamon applesauce pouches this Washington Post report says federal investigators have called it "an act of economically motivsted adulteration." The European Union limits lead to 2 parts per million. McCormick & Company says it adheres to strict safety protocols and procures whole cinnamon bark rather than ground cinnamon to control adulteration and contaminant. Frontier Coop which sells brands Simply Organic and Aura Cacia says it tests for heavy metals and follows New York standard of one part per million of lead in spices. People are discouraged from buying in bulk for turmeric and cinnamon as this creates risks of contaminated or adulterated product. ...

The $1.2 trillion bill that was negotiated a day before March 22 deadline will be voted in the House on Friday. Senator Ms. Murray of Washington state and Rep. Rosa DeLauro of Connecticut secured spending on child care and education programs- a 9% increase in Child Care and Development Block Grant, and a $275 million increase for Head Start, $120 million for cancer research.For the Border the spending bill puts in a 25% increase in funding for technology at the southern border, 8000 more detention beds (Congress funded 34,000 beds), 2000 new Border Patrol agents. Shalanda Young, Janet Yellen and Jared Bernstein of the Biden economic team went before a Appropriations committee in the House. Rep. Steny Hoyer said the Congress that passed the Inflation Reduction Act, the Science and Chips Act and other Biden legislation to aid the economy was the best he has seen in 40 years in the US Congress.

A labor shutdown that nearly shut down the US economy says the Washington Post is a result of policies set by the BSNF management for attendance on freight trains by engineers and other workers. It resulted in a tragedy. Hiles, 51, suffered a heart attack on June 16. He missed a doctor's appointment because he was called back to work. Not showing up could have invited penalties under strict attendance policies of BSNF, one of the largest rail carriers in the US. Aaron Hiles told his wife he felt different, then he made an appointment to see a doctor. On June 16 the locomotive engineer suffered a heart attack and died in an engine room on a BSNF freight train somewhere between Kansas City and Fort Madison, Iowa. President Biden has stepped in and arranged an agreement that includes time off when needed for medical reasons and a 24% increase in pay by 2024.

Jimmy Carter is collecting eulogies at 99 years. He has outlived all presidents. Carter lives with his wife Rosalynn in a two bedroom one story rambler in rural Georgia since 1961, in a house that is so plain and simple that it can only be compared to one that dates back to the mid fifties the simple house in Independence Missouri in which US President Harry Truman lived after leaving Washington in 1952. The WSJ first reported just days before the 2016 presidential election about National Enquirer suppressing a story relating to Karen McDougall and the former president. That story did not get much media coverage. In 2018 WSJ reported a similar story relating to Stormy Daniels and the former president. Rep Marie Perez 34 years, of Washington State, is one of the new members of Congress who feel there is a sense of disrespect for people without college degrees, that Democrats have to go back to the days of John Kennedy when a majority of voters without college degrees supported him. John Kennedy had more support from people without collrege degrees than with college degrees. In 1960 John Kennedy had 52% of people with high school education, 65 years later Biden had only 41%. The 11 percentage points gap is what is needed to be filled to bring the Democratic party back to what its core values are, core values lost after entry of Silicon Valley people and finance industry people into the Democratic party -muddying up the core principles of the Democrats since Woodrow Wilson and FDR from the 1900's to Kennedy in the 1960's, standing up for the rights and aspirations of workers and families.

Experts in Germany and the U.S. look at areas adversely affected by free trade and globalization and the increasing support for right wing parties in these areas. David Autor is a labor economist in the U.S. at MIT who has studied these trends. He says trends in free trade have hurt low wage workers. In 2014 he and David Dorn, Gordon Hansen, Jae Song, published a paper showing how trade with China was affecting different parts of the U.S. Lower wage workers, most of them with less education and skills were prone to be unemployed or face lower earnings in areas where cheap imports from China were replacing domestic production. Donald Trump has strong support with the white working class and less educated workers who form this group. He has accused China of "currency manipulation" and proposed a 25% tax on Chinese imports. Experts say there is no strong evidence that immigrants are causing this type of dislocation in the U.S. Yet immigrant bashing is used by Trump and other right wing politicians which is attributed to it being an easy tactic for politicians to appeal to the anxieties of working class voters....
