These amazing BBC Science pictures of a distant galaxy show a black hole measuring 40 billion km across- a staggering 3 million times the earth's size. More amazing 8 telescopes located in places such as the South Pole and the Atacama desert in Chile were put together to get pictures of a galaxy 500 million trillion km away. Prof. Halcke of Radboud University, Netherlands, proposed the experiment. He says the galaxy called M87 is larger than the entire Solar System, and has a mass 6.5 billion times that of the Sun. The images show an intensely bright ring of fire surrounding a circular dark hole. The superheated gas falling into the hole gives out more light than all the billions of other stars in the galaxy combined. The gravitational pull near the edges is so great that nothing comes out. Falcke had the idea from a PhD. projec in1993. No one thought it was possible to take an image until Falcke realized that a certain type of radio emission would be generated close to and around the black hole, strong enough to be detected by telescopes around the earth. After struggling for 20 years Falcke got the European Research Council to fund the project. Others including NSF joined to fund it for 40 million pounds. ...

French president Macron makes remarkable efforts to bring Rouhani of Iran and Mr. Trump together for new negotiations. French technicians set up the phone connections between the two leaders at the Millenium hotel where Rouhani was staying in New York for UN General Assembly meetings and Macron personally went to the hotel to get the two to talk. Mr. Trump made the call to Rouhani after talks with Macron. Rouhani however did not accept the call as he said the U.S. had to agree to some preconditions before this could happen.

Tata Group chairman Ratan Tata says JRD Tata who ran the company for most of the modern period would be overjoyed if he were alive today to learn about the return of Air India to the Tata Group. Under a deal with the Indian government Tata will pay $2.4 billion to cover one fourth of Air India's debt. The government will give up ownership in the airline. AIr India started as Tata AIr in 1932 flying mail and passengers from Karachi to Bombay during the British period. JRD Tata himself flew the maiden flight which is why Ratan Tata sees the return of the airline to the Tata Group with much optimism. Air India has 120 aircraft, 4400 domestic and 1800 international landing and parking slots. Problems at the airline led to losses of $3 million a day. It was nationalized in the 1950's. The Tata Group is India's largest steel producer, a major auto producer. It is India's largest conglomerate with $100 billion in sales, and employs 800,000 people in 100 countries.  ...

The Republican tax law of 2018 is unpopular, according to a new NBC/WSJ poll in April 2018. Only 27% of people in the poll view the tax law favorably, 36% view the tax law unfavorably. About one third or 32% say they have no opinion, possibly because they have no clear idea of how it will impact them or the country. On trade and other economic issues the Republican Party is viewed more favorably, including for its tougher stance to give the U.S. a level playing field. Even though the Republicans are not viewed so favorably on taxes, the poll findings show the Democrats are not seen as better on taxes and economic issues. The poll also shows the Democratic Party better able by large margins to handle issues such as gun violence, sexual harrassment and health care. This shows that under an aging Democratic leadership of Pelosi, Hoyer and Schumer, and the failure of Hillary Clinton, the younger Democrats with a more Progressive tendency are having to make their own case with people not clear how the Democrats can offer a better alternative. ...

Caryn James provides an exceptional account of Robert Altman, iconoclastic director of M*A*S*H*, which came out in 1970, of Nashville, and a British period movie Gosford Park in 2001. His long career involved moments such as the one described in the currrent exhibit and documentary on Altman at the MOMA- he was fired by studio chief Jack Warner because "that fool has actors talking all the time." With M*A*S*H* the Altman style was estalished as anti-authoritarian, boisterous language, and the overlapping dialogue that so offended Jack Warner, irreverent attitude to established ways, and screenplays that invited improvisation. As Caryn James points out much of Altman's style has filtered through to a new wave of cinema directors, and into movies and television, to the point where it seems invisible. Ron Magliozzi, curator of the MOMA series, says of Altman that he comes across as such a maverick that people lose sight of his work in movies such as Gosford Park, a period piece where a story is told about a murder mystery on a English counry estate, a forerunner for Downton Abbey....

This is what our energy wars, our climate change wars are about in summary. Europe has moved faster than the US, India and China in cutting fossil fuels use over 20 years 2005 to 2025. Europe going from 1525 trillion watt hours to 792- cutting use by half. The US from 2900 to  2553 trillion watt hours just 12%. And China...China tripled its use. This has come at a price as the costs of renewables push up electricity prices beyond what homes and industry can support. UK electricity prices 80% higher than US and half of UK energy users plan to ration its use 2025. Half of electricity costs in UK come from cost and delivery, other half of costs from subsidies of renewables and other. In Germany high electricity costs are hobbling industry and reducing economic growth. Lower electricity prices make the US more attractive than Germany as a place to invest. Another way to look at it- US and Europe cut fossil fuel use by about 1100 trillion watt hours and China increased its use by 4200 trillion watt hours or 4 times what the US and Europe cut in 2024 over 2005. Adding India, Brazil this would be 5-6 times what the US and Europe saved in 2024 over 2005. The "And "strategy of combining reduction in fossil with building renewable capacity is working out compared to dumping fossil in one shove and going all out renewable. There is also the question of equity. China and India argue equity means we should be allowed to use some fossil with renewable for 2.5 billion people's needs. The other side of equity is the US saying the same as "no fossil period" strategy puts the needs of the large part of the population for lower costs of energy  pushed aside as wealthy classes say it is OK. Even when the savings through cuts and sacrifices in US and EU are cut down, cut down by 5-6 fold increase in China, India, Brazil alone. In this kind of climate change war it makes sense not to go with labels such as climate change denial DJT vs China climate change affirming, when China is diluting US-EU climate change entire twenty year savings of 2005-2024 by a factor of 4, 1100 trillion watt hours wiped out by China's 4200 trillion watt hours added. And India, Brazil taking this to a factor of 6. This is why a lot of the discussion with self-righteous indignation becomes less purposeful. What is clear is that every action to cut cost of living in US and EU for large parts of the people is an effort in the right direction as it frees up resources for the fight against climate change, the sense that we are all in the same boat and in the same struggle. The fight against cost of living is part of the long run struggle against climate change. ...

G-7 nations reach agreement for a global minimum tax of 15% a floor for taxes that the Biden administration finds acceptable. This agreement was reached at a meeting of the Treasury chiefs of the 7 G-7 countries in London on June 5, 2021. The G-7 countries are Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, UK, and US. Next agreement from Russia, China, India and Brazil in the G-20 nations would establish new ground rules for the major economies. The G-20 meeting is in Venice July 9-10. The OECD is steering the international efforts to achieve that goal. For the agreement to be effective a number of small nations that use tax rates of below 15% to attract business have to be part of the new rules. One of these countries is Ireland with a tax rate of 12.5%. For the Biden administration in the US the goal is a significant one as president Biden seeks business to pay its fair share so that long neglected priorities for education, healthcare, infrastructure, post pandemic improvements can be met. France and other nations in the EU face similar needs in the post pandemic environment. By setting a floor the Biden administration is both creating a new cultural concept of fairness in taxation and making it possible to finance the $2 trillion spending programs for these priorities of president Biden. Behind this are important facts that have left the large tech businesses paying little or no tax depriving governments of the very revenues that are needed for infrastructure and services for a modern well run state. The Biden administration seeks to include the tech businesses as well as all businesses in the new tax rules so that a uniform idea of fair taxation applies across the whole economy for the first time in two decades. In this way it makes up for the missed opportunities in the OBC administrations of Obama, Bush, Clinton that have led to loss of faith in the state and institutions in the US. A similar situation prevails in the UK,  France and Germany where previous administrations failed to address this important issue of fair taxation and financing infrastructure and priorities in health, education, and critical needs of the people.   ...

In a sign of the changes roiling the pharmaceutical industry the off patent business of American maker Pfizer is based in Shanghai. The generics business of Mylan Pharmaceutical is incorporated in Netherlands and run from Pittsburgh. Pressure is increasing in the generics industry from manufacturers in India and China. Pfizer announced the merger of its Upjohn off patent pharmaceuticals business with Mylan to fight pricing pressures. Pharmaceutical prices in the U.S. are the  highest in the world and generics offer only small relief compared to the government mandated pricing of the same pharma products in India. Generics drugs are also offered at lower prices by distributors who buy in bulk adding to pricing pressures in the U.S. The government rarely intervenes in the negotiated prices as it does in India or in other countries in Europe including Britain.  In fact many asthma patients young and old alike are forced to do without inhalers because of the exorbitant prices set by American manufacturers with scant help from government under Democratic or Republican administrations in the U.S. In this respect middle class customers in India have better access to asthma inhalers as well as hundreds of other medicines basic to healthy living. This has created a greater level of basic equity/fairness in India as well as in Europe in this regard than in the U.S.  In this sense the pricing of basic care medicines in the U.S. adds to the sense of a lack of fairness. To that is added the manner in which the banking and financial industry operated resulting in the financial crisis of 2009 and damage to the bank savings accounts of ordinary Americans hit by unemployment, underemployment, and lower savings accumulation with interest rates kept low to offset the damage done by the banks through bad lending. This is also why an astonishing percentage of Americans like never before in the last 50 years do not have basic funds for spending to manage a health crisis in the family. Just as in times of the Depression in the U.S. industry operates in a way that is oblivious to what ordinary Americans are experiencing only to be excoriated by FDR. ...

Mr. Trump has decisively changed the Republican party. Most Republicans support Mr. Trump personally, less the Republican party. Mr. Lindsey Graham, a senator from South Carolina, says of the Republican party before Trump that it had become a bit staid, that we looked like the banker next door who may foreclose on your house. Mr. Romney epitomized that in his view. Gone are the views on deficits, on wars, and on imports and transfer of technology to China as being acceptable.  Five years from 2015 when Mr. Trump came into prominence with his new style taking on the establishments of both parties with a fierce disdain for convention, both the Bushes and the Obamas and Clintons, the Republican party is completely transformed. Registered Republicans are now 60% non college educated in 2020 compared to 50% non college educated in 2016. The Trump policies on trade putting American workers first and America first have a resounding popularity with this audience- this should be no surprise after decades of job losses and factories shipped overseas under the previous administrations for 2 decades. Most of these workers are not college educated and are white and had enjoyed a good standard of living with a high school education in American factories till the shift of American manufacturing to China destroyed good paying jobs and impoverished the American working class.  Only 30% of college educated people are registered Republicans in 2020 compared to 40% in 2016. Overwhelmingly about 90% of registered Republicans are white.  They are majority male and older but there is a significant about 40% female and 40% young population under 40 years of age. This might resemble the party put together by Missouri Congressman Harry Truman as he led the Democratic Party in 1948 with a majority of non college educated Democrats, fighting for American workers and America first in the cold war with Russia. Truman also had a rough Missouri farm language and accent comparable to Mr. Trump's rough style and language disdainful of the old establishment and new tech establishment. Both were heavily disliked by the media and both did not let this bother them in any way. Both liked facing large crowds as Truman showed in campaigning by train across the country and Trump has shown in campaign rallies run in his own way. ...

Achieving net zero emissions by 2050 will require huge amounts of capital. One estimate is $131 trillion. Where will it come from. The UN Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero says financial groups with assets of $130 trillion have committed to its program to cut emissions. This WSJ report says that is enough scale to generate $100 trillion through 2050 to fund the investments needed for new technologies and provide the finance for companies to restructure themselves in a new world.  The question is how much of this is real as banks, insurers, pension funds and private investor groups are only now taking on the task of restructuring the finance industry. It was not even addressed during the 2015 Paris Agreement on Climate Change talks. For this to be truly transformative and the transformative changes to take place governments have a critical role in requiring a common standard for reporting and measuring climate change progress. Government regulatory action and oversight is essential for timely and rapid action to take place. Financial regulators, including the US Federal Reserve and the Bank of England have agreed to add their own oversight through reviews and disclosure standards. The problem is that private sector plans are not concrete. Data is non existent or inconsistent and measurement is not taking place across all of the financial sector on key parameters. The UN has limited power to enforce rules. Who will act to ensure decisions are taken, progress measured after standards are set, transparency set, and how can governments deliver on each step through 2030 ensuring the transformation of the financial sector so that the decisions are taken according to a master plan for climate change in the US, UK, European Union, and India.   ...

Britain and France, China and India have never elected a representative from their country as IOC president in the 20th century or the 21st. IOC presidents are there for long periods, as long as 20 years. Avery Brundage of the US was IOC president from 1952-1972  for 20 years followed by Morris of Ireland for 7 years. Over the short run Europe presents some opportunities after Germany's Merz gets the constitutional brake on spending removed and plans $1 trillion in spending on infrastructure and defense. The US is busy with immigration and other challenges, and tariffs are part of the effort to stop fentanyl on Canada, Mexico and China. This poses uncertainty for business in 2025 which should gain clarity as most tariffs are meant to ensure a level playing field and India, China, EU, Mexico, Canada cannot argue with the idea of we charge them what they charge us, as reciprocal tariffs, as fairness in trade. These countries have reason to cooperate as it is basically fair trade DJT administration is after. Japan cooperated so history shows it can be done and Lighthizer was Deputy Trade Representative under Reagan when he got the Japanese to cooperate and be fair. His deputy is Jameson, now US Trade Representative in 2025. The new Mayoral candidate for New York City asks one resident would you support a candidate who orders a rent freeze (when landlords charge exorbitant rents and some do not fix housing), free child care and free transportation, and the answer he gets is -absolutely yes. Zohran Mamdani is a immigrant from Kampala, Uganda, from a Asian community in a African country like many taxi drivers and many residents of poorer neighborhoods, and many small shop owners in New York City. He also has lived in the city and is intimately familiar with the problems of the city's poorer neighborhoods. In any other election with a candidate other than Zohran, and in a city not so pushed to the brink with an affordability crisis and poor infrastructure, a former governor such as Andrew Cuomo with years of experience as former New York Governor, and a comprehensive set of solutions to affordability would have won. In the situation today where the affluent class in New York City can easily afford a 2% wealth tax on everyone making more than $1 million- simply $20,000, and a NEw Jersey level tax of 11.5% that would generate $5 billion. Additonal $1 billion from cutting waste and fraud in spending in city budgets and in tax collection. This money can be put into childcare, free buses, and city run grocery stores. Russian oil policy at work in towns like Kalyazin, 100 miles north of Moscow, and across Russia. Gasification program is being extended, plan is to increase coverage from 53% to 60% of the people in Russia in the 2005-2007 program. Increase prices to discourage wasteful use and promote energy saving technologies in cooperation with German companies so that more gas is available for export at higher world market prices, especially to the European market. Use profits to promote exploration and increase exports. Germany gets 45% of its gas from Russia and has built close relationships with Gazprom. See the article in BW, July 31, 2006, Jack Ewing, "The Lines that Bind" and references to German-Russian ties: 1) Gerhard Schroeder, former Chancellor, as managing director of the pipeline joint venture, the $5.7 billion North European Gas pipeline formed by partners Ruhrgas, BASF and Gazprom. Ruhrgas owns 6.4% of Gazprom, and its CEO Burckhard Bergmann sits on Gazprom's Board. 2) The survey by Berlin pollster Forsa shows that 75% of Germans support the pipeline project, 45% consider Gazprom a reliable energy supplier vs. the 26% who consider Saudi Arabia as dependable. 3) At an industrial fair in Hanover German business leaders supportive of Gazprom as follows. Klaus Mangold for Daimler management board member considers it " a totally normal market economic process" for Russia to have threatended to supply China with the same gas if European countries cultivate other sources of energy supply. Michael Gloss, German Minister of Economics and Technology, says its good thing to have a neighbor close to home as a supplier. Ruhrgas, Essen based, is a subsidiary of Dusseldorf company E.O.N., and Wintershall, Kassel based, is a subsidiary of BASF. Wintershall management Board member Rainer Seele, speaks of not just partnerships but friendships. 4) Interlocking ownership of assets between Gazprom and the German companies. Gazprom 35% ownership of the assets in the WinGas Joint Venture, Wintershall gets 35% of the equity and 25% of voting shares in the gas field that supports the pipeline. Ruhrgas traded assets in Hungary for 25% ownership of the same gas field. 5) The German relationship under Merkel changes little because she has no options, German suppliers have long term contracts with Gazprom. This article shows how the Russian policy is being shaped on the ground in small towwns like Kalyazin. The one on Gazprom about "The Lines that Bind," shows how the policy is to build relationships with German suppliers, interlocking ownership of assets, increasing the supplies to Germany from the current 45% to over 50 %. Using German investment in joint venture with Gazprom for exploration and development and building pipelines and securing long term contracts at higher prices. Note the reference in article "Can Gazprom Keep the Gas On?" by BW's Moscow Bureau Chief, Jason Bush, BW July 31, 2006- ironically the policy that caused a lot of controversy between Russia and Ukraine about Russian energy prices will actually provide Gazprom with more profits to put into exploration. Forecasts referred to by Bush show that it is expected to earn $20 billion on $62 billion in revenues. ...

Italy's prime minister, Mario Monti, a senior EU official before becoming prime minister, has the credibility and credentials to bring the French and German sides together on a new plan forward for the European Union, says Steven Pearlstein of the Washington Post. In this report from Rome, where leaders of Italy, Spain, France and Germany are meeting to discuss solutions Pearlstein describes the solutions Monti is putting forward. The European Investment Fund would be built up so that it has funding of about $175 billion or 1% of Europe's GDP to finance truly productivity and growth enhancing projects of innovative small and medium sized business in transportation, energy, education and environmental sectors. These companies have suffered shortages of capital as banks pulled bank from lending. It is the inadequate private investment that is causing the greatest damage in this crisis and $175 billion is at the low end of the amount needed in this crisis. Other steps Monti is pushing forward- for immediate steps to tackle the crisis deposit insurance to prevent a run on banks is essential for European banks. This would come with a eurozone regulatory authority that would have the powers to regulate European banks. The European Financial Stability Facility would be the "sovereign buyer of last resort," under Monti's proposal. Eurobonds come up as a key part of the solution. This is not because German and French taxpayers would be required to finance economies of Spain and Italy. As was shown by the U.S. Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) a well designed program could pay for itself. This would include the EU financial authority taking up stakes in the banks getting help and closing banks that are insolvent. The key point is that if properly executed and executed in a timely and appropriate way this does not have to cost French and German taxpayers- the important thing being to support the eurozone economies before the situation deteriorates. Borrowing at 6% for Spain and Italy will only put the situation out of control as deficits rise rapidly. The concessions for tighter regulation of European banking systems, reducing risk in banking, setting up adequate reserves, closing poorly run banks, and ceding powers to a European Financial Authority that can make the final decisions, are the steps that would have to go with these arrangements. Sound financial management requires that the kind of banking risks taken in the speculative bubbles in Spain, the lack of transparency and credibility in banking estimates of bad loans in the system, and the glossing over the problems at Bankia, would have to be addressed in solutions through regulation by a credible European Financial Authority to convince skeptical German public opinion that financial accounts are conducted in a proper manner....

The economics situation in Eastern Europe is looking much better now after the recovery of confidence in the USA and Western Europe with stimulus measures and other steps to ease credit, and the decision at the G20 summit in London in early 2009 to provide a strong line of credit to emerging market economies struggling in this crisis. The European Bank for Reconstruction ad Development sees a 5.2% drop in GDP in 2009 over 2008, and the IMF 4.9% for Eastern European economies. The region varies country by country, with GDP decline forecast for 2009 over the prior year by the IMF showing a modest decline of 0.7% for Poland which is doing well, Czech Republic 3.5%, Hungary 3.3%, Bulgaria 2%. Other countries Lithuania 10%, Ukraine 8% and Russia at 6% decline in GDP for 2009 are hit hardest but thing there are also improving compared to last quarter. The stock market in Poland went up by 40% since the low in February 2009, Hungary by 50%, and Russia by nearly 90%, reflecting this increased confidence. A big difference is in the way the IMF under Dominique Strauss Kahn is operating. WIth the new mandate to help emerging market countries and the new funds from western countries, China and Japan, the IMF is working in cooperation with the European COmmission, the banks, and the national governments in Eastern Europe, to lessen the effects of this crisis. This is afirst for the IMF and aremarkable change. In May 2009 the IMF gave a$21 billion credit line to Poland with no strings attached , the kind of loan it made to Mexico, as aproactive measure to restore confidence. IMF told the Ukraine that a deficit of 4% of GDP was realistic when it released a $2.8 billion tranche recently. Latvia was allowed to run adeficit of 7% for 2009, with a committment to bring this down to 4% in 2010. Another change is that more aid is now given to western banks with souring loans in eastern Europe, so that these banks do not cut back severely or pull out of Eastern European economies. The EBRD has raised $24.5billion to lend to banks and other companies in the region. And $590 million went to UniCredit Italia, an Italina bank heavily exposed to Eastern Europe. Ther EBRD is looking at investing in 12 other western European banks. The Swedes have national schemes too to help the Baltic countries. The political situation is improving also, as the transition to new administration as aresult of voter discontent is being managed wisely. In the Czech Republic acompetent tranisiton government is headed by Jan Fischer, chief statistician, till elections in October 2009. In Hungary the transition government is run by an economist Gordon Bajnai, till an election next spring....

Literacy and knowledge we believe cannot thrive and grow in a world of web bots, web crawlers, or AI. This requires human curiosity, human learning, and human imagination. We take as inspiration the saying- “One has to be free, and as broad as sky. One has to have a mind that is crystal clear, only then can truth shine in it.” Every contribution whether big or small is precious- in this crisis and ahead.
