The U.S. Agency of International Development's road building program shows how a lot of the money was misspent in Afghanistan. $400 million was assigned for 1200 miles of roads to be built in remote parts of Afghanistan over a 3 year period. Now after the three years, $270 million was spent, yet only 100 miles of gravel road have been built. 125 people were killed and 250 injured by insurgent attacks on the project. The project was closed in December 2011.

Losses at Kabul Bank approaching $900 million in January 2011. According to the New York Times report investigators and Afghan businessmen believe that much of the money has gone into the pockets of a small group of privileged and politically connected Afghans, who prevented earlier inquiry into the bank's dealings. Khamanei as leader of post revolution Iran set up Iranian supported military organizations in neighboring countries such as in Lebanon (Hezbollah), in Iraq, and in Syria, in Yemen (Houthis), over two decades, but failed to make the gains that Asian nations in that period made by investing entirely every dollar in the homeland economy of Iran. By comparing with Asian nations such as South Korea/Japan/Taiwan/China and now India/Vietnam the entire region from Iran and Afghanistan, Pakistan, Persian Gulf, Egypt can be seen as having lost some vital decades of the early twenty first century, and the scale of the difference is nothing short of staggering.  China after suffering invasion from Britain and then Japan, after civil wars and the Korean War, after going through this for two centuries sought peaceful development in 1990-2025, working with Japan and Britain countries that caused so much suffering yet China sough rapprochement, patiently with humility, with incredible results.  Gandhi also sought rapprochement with Britain through the British Commonwealth and cherished institutions of parliament and science learned and gathered from Britain. This was woefully missing in West Asia. When considering the access to capital in fossil fuel sales, the region of West Asia around Egypt may be seen as having recorded the largest wasted capital in wars in world history in the period 1920 -2047 (with only 20 years left to 2047),  by which time India, China, Europe and the US will have shifted from fossil to solar nuclear and renewables and fossil will be no longer generating revenue flows. Very little time is left as development will be that much harder by 2047 without the capital and result being one of being left behind in this new world that is facing us all.  ...

Ron Paul said hw opposed military interventions in conflicts overseas. Perry and Gingrich said U.S. aid to Pakistan should be suspended because Pakistan was not a reliable partner.

President Trump cancels a summit meeting with the Taliban and Afghan leaders at Camp David planned for this week as a step forward in ongoing peace talks to end the war in Afghanistan. The Taliban attacks in Kabul that killed an American soldier was the reason given for cancelling the meeting. President Trump has as one of his goals ending the war in Afghanistan that has tied up American and allied resources over two decades. Scott Shane says no one including Mr Obama talked about Pashtun-land or Pastunistan which comprises 12 million people in Afghnaistan and 27 million on the Pakistan side of the border. This is basically where the war is being fought and the bases are on the Pakistani side. He points to the risks for an exit strategy, as this means shifting the balance in America's favor, which depends mainly on getting the popular nationalistic sentiment support for the Pastun Taliban to erode. With aweak partner alienating the Afghan people the chances for eroding that popular support are not good. Just compare Maliki and the Shiite majority support for the government and Karzai's corrupt and unpopular government, and you see the difference between one surge and the other. Compare the localized fight in Iraq's Anbar desert type flat open areas with a vast mountainous area and popular sentiment of supporting fellow Muslims of the Taliban in Pakistan, and one can see that the two are vastly different. ...
