It succeeded for Apple share owners, and it failed for American workers and people- succeeded by creating a $3 trillion valuation, it failed for the American people by leaving American workers to go unemployed and setting the trend to destroy the manufacturing capabilities and structures that had led to the US following Britain with 300 years of dominance in standards of living for its people and its industrial stength since 1750. The notions of left and right wing politics are now in both countries being replaced with a belief in a higher Being that guides us all. The ideas of Faith, Family and Work independent of the State is the direction in the European Union and other nations in the world.  Brazil as part of the Western hemisphere, and the US asserting the Monroe Doctrine after its experience with drugs and fentanyl, mass migration across its borders, it is now a different hemisphere than before. The US has shifted to securing the western hemisphere from the swings that happened in Cuba and Venezuela over decades that have led to economic disaster, and to millions of displaced Venezuelans crossing borders. In this situation much has changed across Latin America and North America.  In any situation the US is likely to find a favorable investment climate in Brazil, closer relations with Brazil, in its own hemisphere, as it has with India in Asia. A Brazil that would work to give balance to the US process of economic cooperation with Latin America that was the intent of John F. Kennedy in the Alliance for Progress. A vision never realized, put on hold for over 50 years, yet now ready to be realized. ...

China gets 5 million barrels a day through the Straits of Hormuz out of about 16 million barrels a day it uses, about 30% of its total oil needs. Insurers are withdrawing from the market. How will this affect oil supplies and prices? US has offered its financial institutions to offer insurance to all ships going through the Straits of Hormuz and provide assurance with defense escorts for tanker ships navigating the Straits of Hormuz. US will be targeting Iran's capabilities to keep the Straits of Hormuz open so that oil tankers can operate bringing oil from UAE and Qatar to Asia and Europe.

The 730 ton steel sphere in Taipei skyscraper 101 with 100 stories is suspended between several floors at the top of the building as a mass damper to take the violent swinging shock of earthquakes. It can cut the building's swinging in an earthquake by 40%. This has saved occupants during this week's earthquake in Taipei. Closed circuit TV footage shows the building hardly moving which is amazing. The technology is displayed openly in this building built in 2004 as the tallest in the world. In addition 380 piles are driven 100 feet into the ground. Taiwan is located in a seismic active zone prone to earthquakes.

David Card and Alan Krueger with a study on New Jersey and Philadelphia restaurant workers in 1994 and their subsequent studies on minimum wage increases show no negative effects on unemployment of increasing the minimum wage- More discussion on this topic as Minimum wage increases to $22 an hour in 2026 in NY and California. Indrajit Dube of U Massachusetts says it all depends on how far one goes in increasing the minimum wage. At some point maybe $30 a week it could lead to restaurants deciding not to hire more workers. At 45 hours a week for 48 weeks an employe in the fast food industry at $22 an hour would make $47,520, and at $30 would make $64,800. The poverty level is set at $33,000. The problem with these figures is that the cost of housing is so high and automobile costs have risen very fast in the last 5 years. Housing in New York and Los Angeles is very costly compared to states in the midwest, in the south, and other states. Card's and Krueger's, Dube's studies show that retention is higher employees are more motivated leading to higher restaurant and fast food sales, happier customers, that could lead to more employment not less. Some of this is intuitive and one does not need an economist to tell one that. When compared to Britain's economic and social philosopher Adam Smith much of the accepted wisdom of what Smith said is selective taking what one wants and leaving out the rest, as Lahart shows here about minimum wage. As Adam Smith was  a keen observer of the social sentiments of society which he considered very important for British society, and for British civilization to flourish. For this reason he supported higher wages and the betterment of the lower classes, as Britain's example to the world. Independent contractors rule reinstated by DJT administration following employee status push by Biden and unions. This affects 11.9 million workers in the US. Independent contractors cannot unionize and lack some of the protections of labor law. The independent contractors get to choose where they work for remote work days and get to choose the projects they want to take up, set their own hours which can help for childcare or care for parents. It includes workers in real estate, construction, arts, design, and personal care, where most of these independent contractors work. Only a small part is in Uber drivers or DoorDash delivery gig workers. This Editorial Board opinion in Wash. post cites Bureau of Labor Statistics that says from a 2023 survey that 80% of this worker group prefers independent contractor work to full time traditional employment which has less flexibility.

Washington Post calls a Netherlands unrealized capital gains tax of 36% unfair. The legislation was passed in lower house of parliament. Unrealized capital losses could be used to offset gains in future years under this legislation. The US only taxes capital gains after they are realized and at 15% or 20% for long term gains and a 4% added tax for high income persons. The 36% tax would apply to all who own stocks or bonds not just the wealthy.

In Netherlands the average take of the ogvernment is 3%% compared to 30% in US. Healthcare costs are split 65% 45% between the government and average worker, and mostly all (84% of workers) get additional coverage. The value added tax rate VAT is 21% in Netherlands about 3 times the US sales tax of 6-7%. And the Netherlands is in the EU a relatively moderate tax country compared to France and UK.

Russian economy growth slowed to 1% in 2025 growth slows to 0.8% in 2026 following 4% growth in 2023 and 2024. The Economy Minister Reshetnikov says Russia is on the brink of recession. Consumer spending growth was zero in Feb 2026, new car sales dropped 38% in 2025 and continue to drop. Le Monde cites the example of the Mashenka bakery which is facing high costs and increase in value added tax to 22% and was near bankruptcy. Small businesses are suffering in this economic situation. Interest rates are kept at 20% lowered to 15% to keep inflation in check. This shows the Russian economy and people are in a difficult situation to finance the Ukraine war with 40% of public spending going to the defense budget for 2025-2027.

A revolution is taking place in the lives of rural families in India. Under the Jal Jeevan Mission put forward by the prime minister clean drinking water from tap water will reach every family in India. It was launched on Aug 15, 2019 and plans to do this by 2024. The impact is huge. Out of 180 million rural families only 33 million families have clean drinking water from tap water in the country. Clean water brings life to the countryside and access through individual tap water connection brings a revolution to people's lives in a country of 1.2 billion people. This report in the Economic Times tells us what most of us do not know that with the growth in population from about 300 million after independence in 1947 to 1.2 billion today and the drought conditions in parts of the country, the per capita water availability has fallen sharply today. Dropping from 5000 cubic metres of water per capita in India in 1951 to 1545 cubic metres of water in 2011.  The infrastructure capital to be invested is 3.5 trillion rupees or $ 50 billion. $50 billion in cement, pipes, construction, pumps, equipment, wages, conservation, skill building, knowledge in water management to revive the rural economy. Hit hard by coronavirus it boosts the rural economy. The infrastructure project could be a model for other Asian, African and Latin American countries.  Cholera and other water borne diseases can never be eliminated without clean drinking water from tap water for all families in India. India received $135 billion in remittances in 2024-25 from the 18.5 million Indian diaspora, of which 10 million live in the Middle East region sending $51 billion a year. This finances the merchandise trade deficit.  In UAE alone there are 247,000 Indian students and immigrant labor is the main labor supply in the Gulf kingdoms.  Crude oil of 25-30 million barrels is on the seas as inventory to which India has access making crude oil supplies not an issue for the short term. Indian refinery production for export can also be adjusted if needed. India has received a 100 day exemption to import Russian oil from the US since the Gulf war began easing concerns for crude oil supplies. Situation for LPG is more complicated. India has used the Chabahar port to ship supplies of aid to Afghanistan on an overland route which will not operate till the tensions ease.

This article in the Economist points to polls showing women with college degrees favoring Clinton over Trump by large margins of 57% to 38%. A Brookings Institution expert says this could translate into a gain of 4 million voters for Clinton. Many of these voters overlap with suburban women. The Clinton campaign has presented Trump as one who could not be relied on to have responsibility for the U.S. nuclear weapons because of a volatile temperament. Other experts point to concern by women of what the anti-women comments by Trump would do to the condition of women in the workplace.

Polls published by IDEA in Hungary that show less than 10% of Hungarians see EU as a concern most are concerned about corruption and governance and public services cost of living. This was done before the election and showed Tisza at 39% and Fidesz at 30% support with 22% undecided at the time who swung in favor of Magyar and Tisza party. This shows that policies will change and Tisza supporters by large majority want change in policies friendly to EU. Yet the election was fought for good governance, good public services and lower cost of living. This means changes will not be too drastic  with Russia, not keen on Russian oil imports but maintaining pragmatic relations with Russia. But it makes a difference as 18 billion euros will be coming to Hungary from EU that were frozen under Orban which can finance better public services. Rule of law can improve and corruption can be reduced in government for Hungarian society to be seen as healthy after a quarter century of one party government by Fidesz party of Orban. ...

Kharg Island near Hormuz and Jask Island on Gulf of Oman two of Iran's main oil export terminals. Oil is pumped by underwater sea pipelines to storage tanks that hold 30 million barrels on Kharg Island then loaded onto oil tankers that make their way through the Hormuz Straits. The oil is shipped to teapot refineries in China- smaller independent oil refineries in China that have not faced sanctions. This oil is shipped at a discount. How does China pay for this oil? China gets 2.1 million barrels a day from this source. It is paid for with a $400 billion Chinese investment in Iran under a 25 year Comprehensive Partnership Agreement signed in 2021 during the Biden Administration in the US. The investment covers energy, infrastructure and technology in Iran. At $60 a barrel before the Iran War China would have an import oil bill of $46 billion for 1 years supply of oil from Iran. This was paid for in yuan based transactions and barter systems which involved Iranian construction projects performed by China and exchange of other products, raw materials. ...
