This Wall Street Journal editorial on August 18, 2011, says Texas Governor and U.S. presidential candidate Rick Perry made a poor choice of words when he called the Fed chairman's policies "treacherous or treasonous." While admonishing Rick Perry for the use of the wrong words, it says Perry has done a public service to draw public attention to Fed policies. These policies of the U.S. Federal Reserve- Bernanke's and Greenspan's- which allowed the tech and mortgage bubbles to develop and then engaged in loose monetary policies to correct its errors over a ten year period since 2000, should be the subject of debate. Current monetary easing has also added a large element of inflation, and some experts such as Kenneth Rogoff are calling for inflationary levels of 4-6%. Critics of Fed policy such as Allan Meltzer and some Fed governors of regional banks, including Hoenig of the Kansas City Fed, say the Fed has not given enough thought to the long term consequences of its actions. The U.S. needs to address these major changes in policy as serious issues with the public and presidential candidates engaged in the debate. They have everything to do with a vision of a future America....

In this New Yorker essay after Biden's Soul of the Nation speech at Independence Hall Philadelphia, Jelani Cobb stated in the New Yorker that it was a speech made not just for the midterms in 2022, but for setting the country back on the path it has followed since Washington and Jefferson, Lincoln and FDR, to once more as in the times past through civil war, through depression, through world wars, to restore the ideas of equality and democracy when they were under assault. Biden said- This is where we set in motion the most extraordinary experiment with self-government the world has ever known with three simple words, "We the People." "We the People." These two documents and the ideas they embody- Equality and Democracy- are the rock on which this nation is built. They are why for two centuries America has been a beacon tho the world." As I stand here tonight, equality and democracy are under assault. We do ourselves no favor to pretend otherwise." ...

China and Nepal differ on the exact height of Mount Everest. Nepal says is measurement shows it at 29029 feet or 8848 metres above sea level. China calculates it to be 8844.3 metres. Nepal uses as sea level the Bay of Bengal, China uses the Yellow Sea. It varies whether the rock base is used or the variable level of snow and ice at the top. There is more climbing activity on the Nepal side than the Chinese Tibetan side. The mountain is always moving even if it is minutely. Seismic activity has raised it 5 metres. Till 1840 Kanchenjunga was considered the highest till the British surveyed the mountain. In 1856 Andrew Waugh, Surveyor General of India stated that the peak 15 of Everest was 29002 feet or 8840 metres high. In 1865 the mountain was named after Sir Colonel George Everest a fellow surveyor in the British Army. In 1955 India declared the current height given by Nepal. The Chinese occupation of Tibet by 1956 made China a neighbor of Nepal and for Mount Everest. ...

The CDU has the nost popularity at 34% yet Merz himself. a private equity executive with Black Rock Germany, is not personally popular with the German public. His popularity is at about 25%. Boris Pistorius, the Defene Minister in the Scholz SPD and Greens government is the most popular politician in Germany today. Elections are only 4 months away in February 2025, a short time but also a long time with all the changes going on today. In the past CDU and SPD have worked together. Past CDU approaches may not work as Germany badly needs to invest in its economy as the US has done under president Biden. The experience of Britain shows that simply making deals and counting on free trade deals doesn't work, and cuts to public services to budgets including on basic services including water and transportation, climate, do not work either. Are their good leaders and policies that fit the times is a question that will be persistent for many nations.

This New York Times report shows that Rick Santorum sponsored legislation that would have helped Universal Health Services, a Pennsylvania based hospital management company, win hundreds of millions of dollars in additional Medicare funds for its hospitals in Puerto Rico. After losing his Senate reelection bid in 2006, Santorum joined the board of Universal Health Services, and was paid $395,000 in director's fees and stock options. Santorum also worked as a consultant to Consol Energy after his failed reelection bid. This was after advocating policies that would help the Pennsylvania gas and coal producer. The Times also reports that during the time Santorum was in the Senate he had developed close ties to Washington lobbyists.

There are questions whether the Black Rock Germany "Dare Capitalism" (his book) model of CDU's Merz with a debt brake support limiting investments needed in the economy are right for Germany's future. Washington Post's Sarah Kaplan takes us to Greenland where scientists are drilling through the ice to predict the future of climate change. This means drilling thorough 1600 feet of ice to reach the bedrock below. Scientists can analyze the rocks to find when a glacier last melted. The agile subgeological ice drill drills through 500 metres of ice from the US National Science foundation- amazing. If the whole of Greenland ice sheet melted it would raise sea water levels by 24 feet devastating coastlines.

NYT looks at the $19 billion renovation of Kennedy Airport in New York. The executive director of The Port Authority of New York that runs the Kennedy Airport, one of the busiest in the world, says this avoids 300,000 truck trips spanning 1.5 million miles.

Europe is importing natural gas for heating homes and industry like never before as it shifts imports from Russia to the US, says this report in WSJ. Shown here is the import of LNG from tankers at the LNG terminal in Cherniere, France. Between 2021 and 2022 imports of US LNG to Europe more than doubled. The WSJ shows how drilling for gas takes place in Texas and Louisiana. That gas finds its way through pipelines to places where it is converted into LNG by freezing and transported by tankers across the high seas to European LNG terminals like Cherniere in France. The shale gas comes from the Permian Basin in Texas and New Mexico and a basin in Texas and Louisiana. Technological advances enable drilling 2 miles vertically and then two miles horizontally to reach into shale rock containing gas. Impurities are taken out to get gas that can be sent through pipelines to liquefied natural gas storage locations on the Gulf coast of America. Tankers take the LNG to LNG terminals in Europe that distribute the gas to homes. ...

George Will lists the shortcomings of Romney and Gingrich, as U.S. Republican presidential candidates in 2012. Gingrich is the worse candidate, says Will. Gingrich was paid $1.6 million by Freddie Mac, for services as "a historian." His response was to say "If you put people in jail," look at "the politicians who profited from" Washington's environment. He criticized government housing agency Freddie Mac for its role in the housing crisis, and at the same time profited as a lobbyist for Freddie. This shows his personal record and lack of conviction about the need for integrity in government officials. Conservatism, says Will, is about understanding that man does not fully understand the complexities of the world around him. It stands in opposition to man saying that he has grasped these complexities and assuming a hubrisitic attitude. Gingrich with his fervor for the latest idea, is the opposite of what conservatism stands for, says Will. Will sees Rick Perry and Jon Huntsman as better candidates than Romney or Gingrich. Presidential debates don't test what is needed to perform presidential duties and have become ridiculously important. Rick Perry's Texas record as two term governor, and his skepticism and distaste for Washington and Wall Street, give him assets that could prove to be vital for the job of president. Huntsman's positions on issues are closer to the conservative approach to government than Romney's. Will says it is important that Republicans don't give an Obama running as a Harry Truman did in 1948, against Congress, the one thing needed to win - someone who voters have a distaste for....

The Australian bushfires may have killed more than a billion animals, according to estimates by Chris Dickman, ecology professor at the University of Sydney. The vastness of this year's fires leave some species little chance for survival. The government of New South Wales  state airdropped thousands of pounds of carrots and sweet potatoes to endangered brush-tailed wallabies that survived by taking refuge in the rocks.

Abigail Johnson, brings a different style of management to Fidelity Inc. compared to her father "Ned" Johnson. Both are quiet and like to stay out of the limelight, but Abigail is more methodical. Her father was known to take risks to build the company. Abigail is cautious and likely to study each situation very carefully before making a decision. She also requires input from managers at Fidelity who are not accustomed to this. "Ned" Johnson rarely asked for advice and made decisions on his own. Abigail believes actively managed funds will do well once the market performance improves. Critics say this trend is not temporary, as investors have shifted funds into passively managed equity funds at Vanguard, and into ETF's. Morningstar shows about 17% of all mutual funds are now passively traded funds compared to 10% in 2006, a shift of about $700 billion. On ETF's Abigail preferred to partner with Black Rock, because it had more experience in the field.

45,000 dock workers of the Longshoreman's Union go on strike for a 77% wage increase over 6 years. The dock operators offered 40% wage increase. This follows negotiations by other unions for wage increases to meet the cost of living increases of recent years and depressed wages arising from a period of weakness for unions. Biden- Harris want to see fair wages and want to see the strike settled.
