US under the Trade Agreement with EU US plans to send $750 billion in LNG exports to the EU. A Sustainability directive by EU for climate goals puts Qatar at risk of penalty of 2.43 billion euros according to DW.com. Qatar has said it may discontinue exports of LNG to EU in response and shift to Asian buyers. Since the Ukraine war and shift away from Russian gas pipeline supplies German economy Minister Habeck negotiated the deal with Qatar for LNG.

A poll conducted twice each year by the University of Hong Kong researchers since 1997 shows Hong Kongers increasingly identify with their city including Hong Kong diaspora returning to the city from overseas. The latest June poll shows this identification increasing in intensity as time passes. Compared to 1997 and 2007 more Hong Kongers identify themself with Hong Kong and much less with "citizen of the People's Republic of China." After "Hong Konger" the identification next is with "Asian," "global citizen," and "members of the Chinese race." Culture is one major aspect of this, the other is the sense of being drowned by mainland people, by the large number of people from the mainland cities buying housing in Hong Kong, driving up prices and making housing unaffordable for the local people. Other aspects of this are the mothers going to maternity wards so their children can get Hong Kong residency, and the slots in elite schools going to mainlanders. Even the tycoons and large business interests are seen as distanced from the local Hong Konger because of the increasing inequality in society, their benefitting from business ties with the mainland with willingness to give up Hong Kong's local interests. At another level one can see this local identity across other parts of mainland China also, as the educated middle class in Shanghai and Beijing see themselves as apart from the "country bumpkins" and migrants from surrounding rural areas. This is a cultural phenomenon quite different and apart from the ideological concerns of the Communist Party, cultural difference which always exist below the surface. The business elite of the Communist Party can relate more to the environs of Sydney, Australia, than to the rural areas around Shanghai, just as much as the business elites in Bombay with connections to a ruling party can relate to Sydney or Toronto. Not everything about humans fit neatly into ideas such as "China Dream," or a "India Dream." And this may be a good thing when all is said and done- only human nature seeking not to be disturbed. ...

Another way of saying this is that the Fed sees the American economy fundamentally strong under the Biden administration as it strengthens protections for workers and families, corrects flaws in policies for rural America and in other areas, moves to attract foreign investment and gets US companies to invest in America. This makes the danger of inflation greater than a recession, so that a policy of aggressive action with interest rates is justified.

It was also a period when there were differences of opinion on mask use and other preventive action for covid. A Chinese diplomatic envoy goes to France, Germany and Russia to discuss ways to bring an end to the war in Ukraine. The US also looks for ways to bring a settlement to the war. Applied Materials, a maker of machines that make computer chips, will invest $4 billion over 7 years in a new research center in Sunnyvale, California. Part of this investment comes from federal subsidies in president Biden's CHIPS Act to increase American semiconductor production inside the US. The investment will create jobs for 2000 engineers. The idea is to build an ecosystem for research and experimentation in Silicon Valley close to other research centers and universities so that the cost of production can be brought down with the access to latest technologies in usable form.

Inflation is running at just 2% annualized for the last 3 months, Jay Powell says "the disinflationary process has started." Powell says the Fed's initial view that inflation was transitory and that once the supply chain and other problems were sorted out it would decline has been borne out, only it took a year longer than expected to happen. Still some of it wasn't Powell believes and for this reason he does not want to let up on the fight against inflation. Giving up too early is still a mistake Powell wants to avoid.

Finland makes the decision to join NATO on May 12, 2022. NATO's land. border will increase from 1215 kilometres or 745 miles to 2600 kilometres. Sweden is expected to join NATO in a paradigm shift as it has been neutral for 200 years. Once Finland joins Sweden would be alone in the Baltic if it did not join NATO. It says in this edition of its journal that trade unions have stood their ground to better protect workers rights during the pandemic when workers suffered from its devastating impact and in a difficult environment. In the US 1041 of 1363 elections at companies led to unions getting the right to represent workers. This is the highest number of elections over two decades. BYD electric car Chinese automaker has doubled sales in 2022 and is surging past Tesla in China. Most of its component makers are located in Shenzen which were not affected by the lockdowns in 2022, compared to its competitors VW and Tesla with parts makers in Shanghai area. BYD was a pioneer in making batteries for cars in China, which gives it a considerable advantage over VW and Tesla which source the batteries from outside.

Reliance Jio makes the highest bid and takes most of the 5G spectrum in India with a bid for $11.4 billion or over half of the 5G spectrum. The government had eased the size of investment by firms by allowing 20 equal instalments in payment and other measures. This prepares India and Jio to build the 5G network in India as it had done earlier for the 4G network and become the dominant low cost provider in the world. The experience gained in building 4G gives Jio the advantage in building the new 5G network in India on its own.

This NYT report shows how Manhattan District Attorney, Alvin Bragg, decided to first put off any indictment a year ago because he was not convinced about the evidence being strong enough in other areas. It was after hiring a new team, bringing in additional prosecutors and resources, and studying different areas of evidence on different issues that he settled on the one related to the hush money payments to a porn actress. It is at that point that the information for the indictment was put together for the grand jury, a year later.

Ukraine's electricity grid makes it though a tough winter with frequent Russian missile attacks that led to power cutbacks throughout Ukraine. Kviv residents had only 4 hours of electricity and heat, water were also cut off for hours as the winter progressed. With better more advanced defense systems the attacks are fewer now, and the power grid is being repaired. Large transformers and other spare parts are being sent to Ukraine for the repairs. Ukraine is now able to resume exports of electricity in April 2023 showing that the worst of the electricity grid crisis is over.

Strict enforcement actions taken by the US to enforce sweeping restrictions on the export of technology and industrial goods to Russia ,and any foreign countries who seek to help circumvent the action taken to undemine the Russian defense and technology industries. Airlines in Russia, Aeroflot, Azur Air, and UTair are denied access to US made parts or to receive services anywhere in the world including refueling. The actions would apply to China and other countries if they circumvent controls. The controls are enforced through coordination with US allies and partners that monitor for compliance.

This has shown the importance of tackling climate change and ensuring that grasslands and vegetation are protected in Northern China and surrounding countries. Experts say this is not the only problem, much depends on how the overuse of ground water for industrial, mining and other purposes is tackled.

With competition from home care support and assisted living facilities the investors were having a hard time turning a profit on the operations resulting in deterioration in quality of operations and care.
