GE's share price falls below $10. It has dropped 77% in 1 year from the 52 week high of $38.52 a share. Last time it hit this level was April 17, 1995. And its GE Capital unit faces problems. For years it generated half of GE's profits, now it had to sell its commercial paper to the government when markets dried up last fall. It has had to use a government bond guarantee program for bond issuance in recent months, even though it was at one time one of the largest corporate bond issuers. It has been unable to sell its $30 billion private label credit card operations and it appliances and light bulb units, as there are no buyers. As the stock drops GE has to consider cutting the dividend of $1.24 per share, to keep more cash to navigate this crisis. GE's Immelt continues to have his managers focus on the operations, and its business reviews that were conducted weekly are now conducted daily, and the monthly reviews are conducted weekly. How Hyundai has hired a leading marketer with a record of helping the likes of VW and Apple build their brand image. Hyundai inventory is building up and its falling way short of selling 700,000 cars in North America by 2010, it sold 455,000 cars last year. Wilhite had earned a reputation by being Apple Computer s topmarketer and has also headed Nissan's global marketing. Before that he helped give VW a revival in the US market in the 1990's. He sees the need for "a big idea" to get Hyundai off the ground. A new ad agency compared Hyundai's predicament with Galileo's persecution for presenting his theory about the earth revolving around the sun.The problem- even though J. D. Powers shows Hyundai as having surpassed Toyota in Initial Quality Study, the brand had not registered with car buyers. And in 2007 unsold Sonata cars were piling up on football field sized lots behind the Birmingham, Alabama plant of Hyundai. Sales fell 30% in 1st quarter 2007 in the US. market and matched Chrysler's situation of building cars without the buyers....

How the Airbus 380 project went astray and fell apart, and how it was put back on track. The story in some detail how the French and the German engineering groups in Toulouse and Hamburg failed to work together. How the German group was working with poor design software and simply fell behind, leading to the collapse of the program and the failure to put the wiring of the plane which extended for miles. 300 miles and 30,000 cables, something the Germans had never handled before. They had struggled with simpler versions of Airbus and now they were totally unprepared for this. A German engineer, Fuchs in Hamburg, worked closely with the French, transferring German engineering groups to Toulouse. French engineers in Toulouse were more advanced in the details of the work and in software design under French engineer Carcasses. The other problem that the Germans faced was that their individual engineering groups were poorly integrated and did not talk to each other, accelerating the collapse of the project. ...

BP will cut an additional 5000 jobs by mid 2009 with most of these cuts at places like its London headquarters. This is on top of about 9500 jobs that are part of a plan to sell gasoline stations in the USA. The refinery that had a fire in Texas will be back to production at full capacity by mid 2008. Profit excluding one-time items was $4.0 billion for 4rd quarter 2007, less than analysts expected because of declining production and smaller refining margins. BP sees oil at between $60 and $90 a barrel for 2008 and 2009, and plans to increase production to 4 million barrels a day in 2009 and 4.3 million barrels a day in 2012. New production will come from places like Canada, Oman and Libya. Spending for exploration will increase by $3 billion to $22 billion this year. Under Browne BP had stayed away from Canadian oil sands, but Hayward has formed a joint venture with Husky Energy to link a BP refinery in Ohio with Husky's Sunrise oil sands project in Alberta.

Andrew Hall of trading firm Phibro, which traces its roots to the Phipps Brothers a German scrapmetal and raw materials dealer from 1900, and is now a part of Citigroup. He started making big bets after 2004 that futures in oil prices would instead of the then prevailing 20% discount to current prices be priced higher than current prices because of the rising demand from China and India and shortage of supplies. Once he had locked in on this idea and had researched the facts he got the agreement of the head of Ciigroups trading group to place large bets such as buying a lot of oil futures at the prevailing prices. As oil prices shot up this paid off and Phibro kept 20-30%of the profits. Hall made about $250 million dollars and put $100 million into his art collection of new artists. At a time when speculative buying by investors has pushed up oil prices this is a story of one person who made big bets and thrived.

Of Amazon's third quarter profit of $15.3 billion profit $5.7 billion was from the retail delivery business, 60% of it or $9.2 billion was from its cloud services and AI business. The retail business held up with more efficient delivery and logistics growing at 9% for the quarter. 

Amazon had 1.55 million employees up 3%. It's investing capital expenses were $21.8 billion up 88% as it invests heavily in data centers to power AI and will soon launch low orbit earth satellites to provide internet services to areas off the grid.

China's government was not involved, and China says it strongly supports maintaining the security of international submarine cables in accordance with international law. The Chinese ship was carrying Russian fertilizer and had visited Russian ports. Danish Navy ships then tracked the Chinese ship and made it anchor in the Kattegat Strait connecting the Baltic and North Sea. Damage to underwater cables happened in Swedish waters resulting in Sweden launching an investigation.

After campus protests on Gaza the US government to prevent antisemitism on campus took action to see that campus police can prevent student unrest. Columbia University president resigned and Katrina Armstrong was made interim president. Columbia lost $400 million in federal funding of the $1 billion it gets each year. Armstrong made an agreement with the US government last week to get strong campus police enforcement and after explaining this to faculty resigned. An Turkish activist on the Tufts University campus on student visa had her visa revoked and was flown to Louisiana to be expelled this week.

The U.S. Census Bureau shows incomes of American households, the median household income, surged in 2015 by 5.2%. This increased by $2800 to $56,500. This is the largest increase since 1967. It shows that steadily improving employment and hiring is leading to improvement in incomes for the middle and working class. Ris in minimum wage has also helped . The largest increase was for the lowest 20% of the income tiers. Full time working women did better than men, with increase annually of 2.7% for women, and 1.5% for men. Nocitizen incomes increased 10.5% to $45,100, native born households went up 4.4% to $57,200. The number of people without health insurance also declined from 33 million or 10.4% of the population to  29 million people or 9.1%. Another way the changes are helping lower income households is the decline of the official poverty rate to 13.5% in 2015 by 1.2 percentage points from 14.8% in 2014. Through a series of small incremental steps the path is being set for a recovery of household incomes for the middle class and working class. A bright spot is that the improvement has affected all age groups, household types, regions and ethnic groups, though among full time workers women did better than men. In this recession older white men have had more difficulties getting back into the workforce. This is reflected in the political scene in 2015-2016 for the election season. ...

Steinhauser, Walker and Stevis provide an exceptionally good account of the events leading to the March 25, 2013 EU 10 billion euro bailout of Cyprus, with the closing of one bank and the downsizing of another bank. The Cyprus government of president Anastasiades bluffed and lost. That Anastasiades and the Cyprus government would do this in serious negotiations with the finance ministers of Netherlands, Germany, France, the EU, ECB and the IMF at the headquarters in Brussels, in negotiations that ran to midnight on Sunday March 24, 2013, is simply astounding. Charles Dallara representing European bankers tried to do this with German chancellor Merkel at EU headquarters in Brussels during negotiations on Oct. 27, 2011, on an earlier confrontation over bondholder haircuts, bluffed to the last minute and lost. The way Cyprus handled the negotiations surpassed that. Right down to the last hours the Cyprus president waffled- backtracking on earlier agreement to close Cyprus Popular Bank. Calls were made by German finance minister Schauble to Merkel and by French finance minister Muscovici to French president Hollande to give a joint Franco-German response. Finally Anastasiades was told to pack up and leave on Sunday, March 24. The Cyprus government was not defending small depositors as its earlier plan was to tax all deposits at the two largest Cypriot banks 6.875%. Merkel saw this as an error as this would hurt small savers. The final agreement shut down Cyprus Popular Bank but protected insured deposits under 100,000 euros. Another disturbing sign for the ECB and the EU was Cyprus allowing several hundred million dollars to be wired out of the country even though banks were closed and an offical freeze on ouflows existed. A serious mistake in negotiations was when Cyprus finance minister kept EU finance ministers, the IMF and the ECB officials in the dark by not returning calls for 16 hours on Thursday March 25, 2013, while he tried to negotiate a deal in Moscow with Russia's Putin. This destroyed Cyprus's credibility leading to the ECB's warning to cut off liquidity to Cypriot banks which would put the banks into instant bankruptcy. By Friday morning, March 22, 2013, Merkel was angrily briefing her CDU party lawmakers on the negotiations, telling them the Cyprus government and Anastasiades did not get it, that the whole Cyprus model of outsized offshore banking sector- catering mainly to Russian investors - had collapsed. Cyprus unlike any other member of the EU was trying to face down Europe. Negotiations with Greece had been tough and street protests everpresent, yet negotiations went on in a responsible manner and in good faith, something missing here....

When American literacy levels for civics and history are hitting new lows news channels are instead of building a well informed mindset in people doing just the opposite for profit.  Discovery Communications merged with Warner Media in April 2022 to form a new company that controls CNN. That led to appointing Mr. Licht to run CNN news channel. With the end of the Trump period and the pandemic news ratings had declined for both Fox and CNN. Licht's decision to hold a town hall as Mr. Trump starts his bid for the Republican nomination in 2024 can be seen as a way to improve its television ratings and revenues. At a time when only 20% of eighth graders can pass a national education test in history or civics, it should be seen with dismay that television channels are not only not increasing literacy and better understanding of history and civics- instead they are reducing the level of literacy with the kind of news programming offered by Fox News and CNN. This is also true for Google and its algorithm based news as shown in Movement for Global Literacy in Lyrarc.com. This is deeply troubling for American democracy, and for what Biden call the "struggle for America's soul." ...

The Independence Hall Philadelphia, speech by Joe Biden was in retrospect a turning point in America from the chaotic politics of the last 5 years, following a decades long fracturing of the social fabric of America. That fracturing had many causes, all of which have been identified by president Biden and leaders in Congress such as Mr. Schumer and Senators Coon, Hickenlooper, and others, who are working nonstop on legislation and funding of America's new priorities. These are priorities of protecting working class families, building their savings, supporting education and healthcare for working class families, building back better America's crumbling infrastructure, tackling climate change, financing renewable energy, rebuilding America as a manufacturing leader for the world. It is because of this effort that candidates who support this effort prevailed in Pennsylvania, Nevada, and Arizona for Democrats to retain the Senate and be competitive in the House of Representatives. Only complacency led to unexpected losses in New York state for the House of Representatives leading to loss of the House by a small margin. Life for ordinary people in the GDR meant living in a communist state but for ordinary people it also had its good points, as shown in this report on the German Democratic Republic that lasted from 1949 to 1990. Female participation in the workforce was 90%. It was the most developed state in the bloc of countries led by the Soviet Union. Ownership of fridges or refrigerators was twice that of the western nations. Till 1989 the East German state known as GDR was accepted as a socialist workers state even by people in West Germany called the Federal Republic. Its collapse so quickly was not expected and was a result of a chain of events in which eventually no one was in control- a totally spontaneous collapse of a socialist state. For east Germans 33 years later it is still a difficult event to grasp as the collapse of the socialist state led to most of the young population moving to western germany leaving behind an aging population without the economic security for workers that prevailed in the former GDR socialist state. As a result even after billions were spent on integration east Germany never adapted to the change, and still feels separate from the rest of Germany, and people feel looked down upon. ...

Russian president Putin may have exacerbated the very thing he feared- a deepening demographic crisis in Russia. This report in the Financial Times says excess mortality was already one of the highest from the coronavirus- about 1 million compared to official figures of 360,000. During the 1990's Russia had gone through a demographic decline with fewer births after the fall of the Soviet Union and unstable conditions in the economy.  During the pandemic there was outward migration from Russia as a result of people wanting access to vaccines other than the local vaccine, says FT.  In an interview last November Mr. Putin talked about the dangers to Russian statehood and to the economy from a drop in births and falling population. The war has worsened this situation as the FT says about 70,000 highly educated people left the country in March and another 70,000 are expected to leave in April. The response of Europe and the US to the Ukraine invasion with moves that affect the Russian economy could lead to drop in jobs and living standards that lead to a further drop in births, says FT. This may be a more serious way in which Mr. Putin may have neglected to consider Russia's own long term interests in invading its neighbor.   ...

The first spread event for Omicron outside of South Africa is now known to be in Norwegian capital of Oslo. Some workers of renewable energy company Scatec SA returning from South Africa where the company has a solar panel project attended an annual holiday party. The party was at Louise an upscale Oslo restaurant, with 120 people all vaccinated, and tested the day before. More than half have tested positive for covid 19, with at least 13 having the new variant Omicron. Oslo municipal health department says it expects more Omicron cases among the 64 coronavirus cases as remaining workers get tested. The results so far are anecdotal and thin to be sure, yet they show none of the infected employees were seriously ill, says this report in WSJ, citing a company spokesman. The spokesman says people had different sysmptoms but none were severe. Tine Ravlo, assistant superintendent of the Oslo municipal government says- all of them are under isolation at home. And  for now they have what they describe as mild symptoms such as headache, cough, sore throat, and flulike symptoms.  Norway has 80% of population of 5.4 million people fully vaccinated. Mask mandates are in place again in Norway, private indoor gatherings limited to fewer than 100 people. ...

A look at the economic collapse in Lebanon as reported in the NYT. Lebanon depended on foreign inflows of money for its economy and standard of living. The economy has collapsed in recent years because of mismanagement, corruption and sectarian conflict. A civil war in Syria. and wars in the Middle East hurt Lebanon's economy after 2011.  After Lebanon's civil war ended in 1990 the central bank decided to tie the currency lira to the US dollar at 1507 lira to the dollar. To be able to exchange lira for dollars the central bank had to attract dollars. To attract foreigners to deposit dollars the central bank head decided to pay 15% interest. With insufficient US dollars as dollars were also needed for imports, the central bank ended up paying depositors with dollars from new deposits, what is called a Ponzi scheme says the NYT. When these deposits stopped coming in 2019 people could not withdraw their money. Three developments after 2019 hurt the economy. The pandemic hurt tourism which makes up 18% of the Lebanese economy. The pandemic hit Lebanon hard. Then in 2020 a bomb blast hit Beirut port from an abandoned ship in the port destroying three large neighborhoods that could not be repaired. ...

It costs about 8 million pounds for maintenance of St Paul's Cathedral. St Paul's Cathedral income declined by 90% as the pandemic led to fewer visitors and ticket sales. The government provides 3.3 million pounds from its culture recovery fund. Because this is not enough for maintenance, much less the 15 million pounds needed for the repair of the 17th century lead roof, one of England's best known cathedrals had to dip into and nearly exhaust its reserve funds. If this is the condition of St Paul's one can imagine what decades of misallocation of capital have done in the rest of the country. St Paul's Cathedral remained a defiant symbol of British resistance in the Second World War during the Battle of Britain.  The dean of the cathedral Very Rev. David Ison says "if we don't have the resources to pay for heating and lighting we may have to close our doors." Imagine closing England's most famous cathedral and symbol of its spirit for lack of funds. Notre Dame Cathedral by contrast in Paris is being renovated with $100 million euros donated by two French businessmen and $700 million pledged so far to rebuilding and renovation of Notre Dame. ...

In this interview in The Hindu with Public Health Foundation of India president Srinath Reddy, the importance of safe behaviours including masks and social distancing, public discipline to tackle a potential third wave. This was also pointed out separately by the Director AIIMS.  Mr. Reddy says study by Public Health England shows just one dose of Astra Zeneca vaccine is not very effective against the Delta variant- about 30% effective. As a result he suggests the need to reduce the spacing intervals which are at 8-12 weeks to a shorter interval now that adequate supplies of vaccine will be available starting in July and August till the end of the year. The initial spacing was 4 weeks when Astra Zeneca vaccine was first introduced and at which time the variants had not emerged. The Indian federal government affidavit to the Supreme Court shows that 1880 million doses of vaccine will be available by the end of the year 2021 to vaccinate fully with 2 doses the population of India over 18 years using 5 locally manufactured Made in India vaccines. This does not include the mRNA vaccines that will be made available from Moderna and Pfizer for which cold storage facilities are being prepared by the federal government.   ...

When it comes to essential policy Republicans and Democrats in the US Congress can and will work together. A roughly $1 trillion infrastructure bill passed in the US Senate. Kentucky Republican Mitch McConnell says there are issues that are popular with both Democrats and Republicans.  He said in an interview with the WSJ - "The American people, divided, sent us a 50-50 Senate, and a narrowly divided House. I don't think the message of that was, 'Do absolutely nothing.' And if you are going to find an area of potential agreement, I can't think of a better one than infrastructure, which is desperately needed." The infrastructure bill passed this week 69-30 in the US Senate. McConnell thanked president Biden for getting the Democrats ready to compromise to pass the bill. Biden's long experience in the US Congress compares with another US president, when getting Congressional action from both parties was needed. Lyndon Johnson had this type of long experience in the US Congress which enabled him to reach compromise with Republicans to achieve goals in civil rights legislation and in passage of Social Security during the 1960's. In this sense Biden is right for the 2020's when national rebuilding is the task before America. ...

The US budget spending bills were delayed right up to a deadline- when government would lack funds to operate- on March 22. The US Congress had no choice but to agree on passage of the $1.2 trillion funding bill, yet only about half of Republicans 101 Republican House members supported it to pass 286-134. To get it passed at the last minute a 3 day opportunity to go over a 1014 page bill was suspended by two thirds majority. It was decided by senior members of Congress on the Republican side with Biden Democrats in a negotiation between Speaker Mike Johnson and NY Senator Pat Schumer. Additional funding was authorized for border immigration control- the Senate immigration bill that passed 70-30 in the US Senate changes the asylum and parole policies that are the root of the immigration problem at the US border with Mexico, yet it  remains stalled in the House as the Republican nominee for president has blocked it. The border will get 2000 more agents and more detention beds, increase in technology budget by 25% and a cut for State Department of 6%, as a temporary measure. A cutoff of funding for UNRWA refugee relief agency. Additional money was provided for child care programs and education with bipartisan support .  ...

Denmark based Maersk is the link that connects Asian exporters to the US and Europe. It measures its container ships in size by TEU's a TEU being  20 foot container boxes, 20 foot equivalent units being standard. The Dali container ship had 4700 40 foot container boxes that was built for 10,000 TEU's. When Japan was the large exporter getting Toyota's into Long Beach it was 6400 TEU's , with China now sending BYD E vehicles it is now as large as 10,000 TEU's. In the future with India sending its exports under a resilient supply chain to the US it is 20,000 TEU's. What we don't see are these ports such as Long Beach and Hamburg (in which China has ownership stake) which are increasing capacity for taking in exports from Asia. It has reached these volumes only in one direction from Asia, which president Biden is trying to reverse by building factories at home for resilient supply chain and for jobs and a future for American workers. The Dali 4700 containers that hit the bridge at Scott Key in Baltimore also were figuratively hitting America's own manufacturing base, and its workers and communties built around factories, across the Nation. ...
