Buddhism gives people the opportunity follow a path to spiritual life and peace of mind without getting involved in politics. Here NYT provides a look at Buddhism in China as it is practiced to get people to set better moral standards to rejuvenate China. The founder was a small child traveling across China with his mother searching for their father after the Japanese invasion of China. He joined a monastery they passed by. After the Communist takeover of the mainland in 1949 and during the years of the Cultural Revolution he was active in a missionary movement for Buddhism and Buddhist culture in Taiwan.  Chinese president Xi Jinping has met with him 4 times and supports the movement in China as part of an effort to rejuvenate China and improve moral standards lost during the rush to modernization and industrialization. At one point even telling him "I have read all the books you have sent me Master."  For this movement to revive Buddhist culture and ethics the politics is secondary, what matters is the quality of people's lives and their finding fulfillment by living lives that honor the values of a good society that is caring for fellow beings, and practicing good moral standards.  Imagine a 100 acre facility that holds 2 million books in Yangzhou, including 100,000 volume collection of Buddhist scriptures. Built in two valleys of bamboo forest the temple in Yixing  is special, the atmosphere quiet and reflective, and with reading rooms, rooms for calligraphy, for tea. It was started in 2006 and is active with many people visiting the temple. In Buddhist countries such as Burma, Sri Lanka, Thailand, wherever Buddhism has got entangled with politics the purity and purpose of Buddhism has suffered. Putting Buddhist culture, learning, and quality of living first is essentially the way the Buddha had meant it to be. In a rare and profound way both Mr. Xi and the founder of this Buddhist group have made a unique and lasting connection to rejuvenate China after 100 years of tumult, war, and strife that started with the wars at Chinese ports in the 1850's, and 50 years of rush to industrialize that made weary and weakened the soul of a nation. During the period post coronavirus pandemic China and the Chinese people may find in Buddhist culture much that can enhance the quality of life just as the European nations France, Britain and Germany look back to their own culture and tradition for rejuvenation and renewal. In this sense even as China faces a West determined to protect its industry and technology, and returns to its roots, China can find a way to its own roots, confident that the period of European domination can no longer torment its soul. ...

According to the General Accountability Office inquiry, 28 drug products had price increases over 100% in 2000, in 2008 71 drug products had such large increases. Medicines like Adderall for attention deficit disorder, Inderal for chest pain, Sumycin for infections were in the list of 416 brand name drug products where makers or distributors raised prices at least once by 100% or more for period 2000-2008. As large pharmaceutical companies sold their marginally profitable drug products or small selling products to smaller companies, these smaller companies would immediately increase prices to recover the money they paid to the large pharmaceutical companies. 26 of the brand name products saw prices raised 10 fold. A third of the drugs with large price increases treat depression and disorders of the central nervous system.

This is a companion short article to the longer article of Gordon fairclough's trip in a Chinese company made Cherry A1 compact with friends through the 1700 mile Silk Road in Xingiang Province of China. This is a very important piece of writing as its the first time someone has taken a Chinese small car in for a difficult 3 day test drive through mountainous and desert regions for 3 day in a remote region nearly 1700 miles. The Cherry A1 is advertised by China as a worldclass vehicle for about $7000. Is it really is the question. And Gordon says it passes his test admirably. Note that its built with help from Italian auto design firm Bertone, powered by a 1.3 litre enginedeveloped with help from Austrian engineering firm AVL, and made with parts from Honeywell International and Visteon. And finally assembled in Anhui province, a poor province of China, with workers who earn $1 an hour. The Cherry is a government owned company started in 1997. This Cherry will be marketed under the Dodge brand in Latin America and other developing markets by end of 2008. It will be modified for safety and environmental rules and marketed in USA and Western Europe in 2009. SAys Gordon Fairclough that for a small car the car ride was realyy smooth and quiet and even at 100 miles an hour there was only a slight vibration on the steering column. The airconditioning worked well in the desert. The car had a CD player and a USB port for MP3 players. There are 100 vaccines being developed all over the world, of these 30 are in India. One is a collaboration with Britain for the Oxford Astra Zeneca vaccine to be produced largely in India. The other is one by ICMR. Other vaccines are the Johnson and Johnson  one dose onl vaccine. These vaccines have the advantage of not requiring ultra low temperature storage. 

Even though the Pfizer BioNTech vaccine is off to a start in Britain this does not mean that the other vaccines are not going to be out soon as early as by the end of December. There is also no clarity on how long the protection lasts. More than the one billion doses of the Pfizer vaccine will be required making the other vaccines just as or even more important. Asia and Latin America, Africa are still not in the picture and will have to be for the protection to be effective.

With more vaccines available from Pfizer and Moderna, and the poor SinoVac Chinese vaccine effectiveness against the Delta variant, Brazil and other countries in Latin America and Asia are shifting away from Chinese vaccines. Brazil's federal government has halted negotiations for additional doses of Chinese vaccines. In the early stages in 2020 Chinese vaccines helped Brazil cope with the devastating rise in cases. The slow pace of vaccinations in US and Europe has freed up more vaccine doses of Pfizer for other countries including Brazil. From accounting for 80% of vaccines in Brazil early in 2020, SinoVac vaccines now make up only 35% of Brazil's vaccine doses. At that time Brazil bought 100 million doses of SinoVac vaccine which were delivered. The local producer of SinoVac vaccine, the Butantan Institute will no longer make Chinese vaccines. While Sinovac vaccines are effective at preventing deaths, the vaccines have a low effectiveness rate for symptomatic infections. ...

Barry Eichengreen of the University of California, Berkeley, looks at problems in the British economy reflected in the sharp decline of the pound of over 10% which he says will get even worse. The problem is weak productivity growth. Eichengreen looks back in time to similar crises for the British currency the pound. In 1931 it was unemployment at 21% that made the pound weak. In 1949 the high war debt made it difficult to finance British imports. In 1967 under Harold Wilson the drop in productivity was a problem. In 1992 the cumulative loss of productivity and uncompetitive exports with British output per hour about 15% below Germany led to a sharp decline in the pound. The current crisis reflects falling productivity from a lack of investment in infrastructure, deterioration in educational levels, the lack of trained and educated people to fill positions. Today Google operates in an environment where foundational anti-monopoly legislation has not been written for about 100 years says this report in WSJ. The Sherman Act of 1896, and the Clayton Act of 1914 form the foundations of anti-monopoly legislation. The Clayton Act was last updated in the 1970's. For 50 years no update has been done leaving the ground open for unfair advantage and conditions that are harmful to the American people say members of Congress sponsoring new legislation.  The Cruz-Lee-Klobuchar-Blumenthal bill would prohibit companies processing more than $20 billion in online ads from participating in more than one part of the online ad ecosystem. Germany's chancellor Angela Merkel says she will not support the moves by the EU commission to impose export bans on export of Astra Zeneca vaccines made in EU countries to Britain. A Dutch factory has 4 million doses of this vaccine ready for shipment.  Merkel says, "there are a huge range of international interdependencies when it comes to vaccine production. You have to be very careful when it comes to imposing export bans. You have to take a close look at supply chains."  Merkel's action comes as Britain makes an effort to talk to German and French leaders for a fair way to allocate supplies of vaccine. France and Germany see the need for the principles of "reciprocity" and "equivalence" to be covered in settling the differences on vaccine supplies. Equivalence refers to the sense that there should not be a big gap between EU and non EU countries in vaccine access. From 2007 to 2022 US electricity demand flattened with new energy efficient technologies. It is now poised to increase from 2022 to 2035 and the process is happening  with approval of new natural gas plants and new data centers, new manufacturing plants needing large amounts of renewable energy. This say Plumer and Popovich in NYT could very well upset president Biden's plans to get 100% of energy from renewables by 2035 and cut greenhouse gas emissions by half to tackle climate change. Utilities are moving ahead with putting up new natural gas plants, and new data centers are needed for the shift to remote work since 2020, electric automobile and chip making plants are coming up at a rapid pace. Without a sustained effort the climate change action needed may not take place with the long lead times to bring renewable solar, wind and other energy and put it in place for transmission. Trump 2017 tax cuts have been studied in detail at Princeton, U of Chicago, Harvard, and Treasury Department. The effects are that it is adding $100 billion each year to the national debt of $34 trillion. And gains to individual workers are only about $750 a year not the $4000 promised per worker. The corporate tax rate was reduced from top rate of 35% to 21%, and investment spending was given accelerated deduction for income taxes. The studies show investment growth in years after 2017 was the same as the years before. To test if the rate of investment was slowing and the law pushed it up studies show this not to be the case. It was also shown that accelerated deduction of investment was more effective in increasing investment for individual companies based on 12000 corporate returns studied. ...

Depleting ground water reserves are leading to water shortages in India's cities. About 40% of India's people lack drinking water by 2030, according to government think tank NITI Aayog 2018 report. Water shortages are hitting cities such as Chennai. This report looks at the water shortage in remote Himalayan region Ladakh. WOrld Resources Institute points out that India is the 13th most water stressed country in the world, with a population three times the combined population of 16 countries that are water stressed. By 2030 water demand will double in India. The government is giving drinking water top priority in its plan for the next 5 years as key to development.  One of the problems is that farmers in the northern plains pay little for gorundwater use resulting in the planting of water intensive crops. The government plans to promote conservation of water as a national priority with education on this subject of water critical to achieving its objective of providing 100%  access to drinking water for Indians. The US tariff on China made EV"s imported into the US is 100%. The EU has a 10% tariff. It has now imposed additional tariffs that range from 17% to 38% depending on its investigation with Chinese companies on how much support they get from the Chinese government as hidden subsidies. This move is to level the playing field. The result is that BYD faces a 17% tariff because it has operated relatively on its own. For Geely and SAIC it goes up to 38%. The tariff on European companies making EV's in China and exporting them is additional 21%. US carmakers (GM and Ford) have only a small presence in the Chinese car market compared to the Europeans who  make and sell 3 million luxury cars in the Chinese market (BMW, Audi, Mercedes Benz). About 25% of EV's sold in Europe are now China made EV's. The EU wants to level the playing field so that local makers maintain a strong presence in their home markets. Much of the growth in 2022-2024 was a result of Biden administration government spending on infrastructure supported by private sector spending. With efforts to cut waste and set new priorities in government spending, growth in 2025-2026 has to come from private sector spending with the DJT administration. The tariffs in the first 100 days are seen by business as a bargaining chip. Scott Bessent has described the tariffs as domestic policy, and president DJT has stated clearly that the tariffs against CMC countries, Canada, Mexico and China, is intended to stop the flow of fentanyl into the US. The scale of the fentanyl issue can be seen from the 490,000 American deaths over 12 years from fentanyl.  It is incumbent on CMC countries to take action on fentanyl. The "Burning Platform" memo by CEO Stephen Elop, seeks to confront Nokia with the reality of what is happening, as it has fallen years behind competitors who have completely changed the space Nokia was in. Apple's iPhone has redefined the space for smartphones and Apple now owns the high end market. In 2008, Apple's market share in the $300+ price range was 25%, by 2010 it was 61%. Newcomer Android has in 2 years created a platform that by attracting application developers, service providers and hardware manufacturers, is winning the mid-range down to 100 euros. And in 2008, MediaTek provided complete reference designs for phone chipsets, so that Chinese manufacturers in Shenzen could produce phones at an astonishing pace. They now own the low end of the market, producing an estimated one third of the phones sold globally. A crtical part of the memo is about ecosystems. He says it is no longer about hardware and device to device competition, but about ecosystems that include not just hardware and software. It includes developers, applications, ecommerce, advertising, search, social applications, location-based services, unified communications and so on. Total household debt, including mortgages and credit cards, as a percentage of disposable income, has declined from 130% in 2007 to 116% in 2010. The Federal Reserve reported this data recently. Much of the reduction in debt was done through defaulting or walking away from mortgage loans, and some of it by reducing expenses. Commercial banks wrote off $118 billion in mortgage, credit card and other consumer debt in 2010, according to the Fed data. This amounts to half of the total $209 billion in debt reduction for household debt, which includes new mortgages and credit card debt. Economists say the level of household debt is still high because household debt at a level lower than 100% of disposable income is where it should be. Many consumers are still in a weak condition because of the weak job market, which has resulted in their using up some of their retirement savings till a job at a lower pay is found. Job cuts at the state and local level are still looming as state governors reduce their deficits. Total U.S. nonfinancial debt went up by 4.8% to $36.3 trillion, with a 20% increase in federal debt. Higher gasoline and food prices also act as a tax on households in 2011....

US trade deficit of $46 billion with India and DJT call to buy oil and gas from the US, to shift away from purchases of $50 billion of oil from Russia, of 2 million barrels a day. India only imported $1 billion of oil from Russia in 2020 and this is a call from the US to India to stop financing Russia's increasing air attacks on Ukraine in August 2025. For India this oil came at $70 a barrel when prices were around $90-$100 a barrel in 2022-2024. In 2025 oil prices are at $60 a barrel, and even if prices increase to $70 a barrel India can make the shift. US and Germany, the EU, Britain which seek negotiated end to the war in Ukraine will continue to pressure India in 2025. Russia could shift some of the oil to other places but the huge demand from a country India's size will not then be seen as a factor in prolonging the war. India needs to think ahead for the next 20 years and its goal of modernization by 2047 like China has done in 2000-2020. And not get into a nationalistic mode that may not be in the best interests of the Indian people seeing that this may serve the interests of all nations including Russia to phase out this European war. ...
