US president Biden visits the southern border with Mexico where there is a surge of migrants mostly from Nicaragua. He meets Texas Governor Abbott and visits the El Paso border area and El Paso county Migrant Support Center. He will then meet Lopez Obrador of Mexico and Justin Trudeau of Canada in a summit meeting in Mexico. This report in the WSJ says Mr. Biden is pursuing policy that will send back migrants including Title 42 used by the Trump administration. Republicans have made the border a top priority. Trump era policy requires Mexico to take back 30,000 migrants a month from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela. Biden plans to continue these policies for illegal entry to stem the surge.

Biden's father, Joe Sr. grew up in Maryland during the years of the Great Depression.  Biden on the campaign trail often reminded people that he could connect with people who faced unemployment or economic difficulties because of the experience of his father in the years he was growing up in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Biden's early experience has shaped his views on America, on Franklin Delano Roosevelt and the New Deal that helped America get back on its feet during the Great Depression. This is also the driving conviction behind his $2 trillion Families and Workers Plan to get America back on its feet after decades of neglect of working class Americans and the effects of the pandemic.

New proposals from the President tend to go back from his promise of tranparency . Its the administration that will decide under this proposal what constitutes anational security leak. A clear federal standard would let ajudge decide whether national security was affected. In reality the argument goes the other way becauseit hurts the public's right to know, and it does this to avoid embarrassment. Some in the administration want to take this route and President Obama s willing to go back on tranparency pledges he made. A good media shield law that is aclear federal standard in addition to state shield laws would trust the judiciary to decide, now Obama is going back on his pledge for anew era of openness especially when two wars are being fought and there is a global economic crisis.

A 41 year old doctor, Vasant Narasimhan, is the new CEO of Novartis in Feb. 2018. Under Narasimhan R&D is expected to get prominence. His predecesor Mr. Jimenez's focus was on developing new prescription drugs. Dr. Narasimhan sees a shift to new technology, improving data science and digital capabilities to discover new medicines. This shift raises the possibility of a spinoff of the Alcon eyecare business and the Sandoz generics business.   Narasimhan joined Novartis in 2005 from consultancy Mckinsey & Co. and becoming head of R&D. He is expected to push a series of tech based initiatives including artificial intelligence to be used for new biomarkers showing effectiveness of treatment, new sensor technologies developed with Microsoft. This shift is a result of the earlier effort under previous CEO's to make up for the loss of patent protection on profitable drugs by diversifying into consumer healthcare. During the period under Jimenez Novartis share price performance was mediocre, rising 41% over 8 years. Its business is stagnant with a 1% increase in 2017 for revenues, the first increase in 3 years.   ...

The Obama first family and its many mulicultural faces from Kenyan, Indonesian, Chinese to African American and White abolitionists from Missouri. Truly a new face of the American continent. About 25% of white Americans have interracial marraiges and nearly half of all black Americans belong to a multiracial family, according to estimates made by Joshua Goldstein of the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research. What it does is wake one up to the reality, the changes that have already ocurred in the country which most people had not realized. With Blacks, Hispanics, Jewish people, Asian Americans, the 25% of whites in interracial marraiges, recent immigrants, white women, and white males making up this mosaic of cultures and communities that makeup America. And the geographical mix is also just as varied, with the west and the northwest and the midwest and east having a bigger share of this mosaic than the south and the mountain states. Whites in interracial marraiges tends to breakup the traditional white protestant insular demographic. On the religious side there is a breakup of the traditional white demographic with Irish Americans especially those in the east tending to move away from the traditional white protestant insular demographic because of their own particular historical and cultural narrative.
