Brexit is now seen as based on some mistaken ideas that were presented to the public without much thought or seriousness. One of these ideas is that Britain would simply be free to sign its own trade deals with other countries. One such deal would be with a 1.3 billion people rapidly expanding economy like India. Yet India - Britain trade is very small today and is vastly overshadowed by EU - India trade relations. In fact the European Union is India's largest trade partner. By removing non tariff barriers and tariffs India's economy would expand by 1.3 % annually adding $25 billion to India's GDP each year, Ifo research shows. The EU would see 0.14% growth in GDP, a gain of 21 billion euros annually. Germany would boost its automotive and machine tools industries, and India its textile and services industries.  Many British companies manufacture in India and are not exporters. The amazing story of 15 million tons of clothing coming to Ghana each week with 40% of this ending up in landfills and in water, polluting ecosystems, because of the poor quality of clothing, is shown in DW.com's Science section. Even a relatively developed country with awareness about ecology faces such a problem today. The good intentions of western consumers are not working, with more rags ending up in landfills causing environmental damage in Africa. A recent report showed this ending up as far away as the Atacama desert in Chile. When this stuff ends up on beaches and in the water it causes damage the way the indiscriminate use of plastics has already done.

Shamil Shams interview with Shakuntala Banaji, expert on media and communication at the London School of Economics, on the general election in Britain. Banaji says there has been persistent negative coverage given to Jeremy Corbyn of the Labor Party for the last two years. A lot of hard work has been done by Labor MP's, Labor activists, volunteers, to get the Labor message across. Corbyn is seen as giving a calm composed performance in the face of hostile media and audience, including the televised interview in which he talked of real issues facing ordinary British people. One of the ways Corbyn has softened the media distorted image of him is by acting calmly under pressure and not taking on an autocratic style. This was best seen on the day he first handed out the Labor party manifesto with the focus on the message- for the many, not the few. Some of the coverage of Corbyn is described here as being improper and unacceptable.

The new head of India's Space Agency ISRO, Kailasavadivoo Sivan, talks to DW.com about the Space Agency's plans for the future. ISRO launched a mission to Mars which went into Mars orbit, at a very low cost.  The Mars Orbiter Mission vehicle is orbiting the planet Mars since 2014. In 2008 ISRO sent an unmanned spacecraft to orbit the moon. The future missions include a second mission to the moon, and a mission to the Sun. The solar mission Aditya-L1 will study the properties of the Sun. Mr. Sivan says his focus includes use of High Throughput Satellites(HTS) for providing high data-rate transmission. This is now available in cities, and the HTS will enable this for remote regions of India. Other focus is in agriculture with information on crops increased from 8 to 15 crops so that farmers have more information on fertility of soil, crop yields. Sivan says progress can be made with more international cooperation and sharing of technology, particularly with India leading the way with low cost high tech applications that benefit education, agriculture, and bringing space applications to people it never reached before. Sivan comes from one of India's villages, which are now experiencing change through India's rapid modernization efforts. ...

For years Deutsche Bank chased profitability but the results are dismal. Recently 18,000 jobs were slashed and the bank is now accepting the inevitable shrinking. It all started with with chasing profitability in the U.S. as an investment bank leading to deep losses during the 2009 financial crisis. While German and Swedish teachers as shown in this weeks stories from Europe show struggle to make ends meet on low salaries, jobs in banking have continued to pay even when their are steep losses as at Deutsche Bank. This report argues about who is responsible for high severance pay at banks investors, shareholders, supervisory boards or regulators. Ultimately it is about what choices a society makes, and about the importance it gives to education compared to other occupations, and to good governance across the board without exceptions.
