Angie's List provides information on home improvement contractors and on health care companies. It was started by Angie Hicks after she graduated from Depauw University in Greencastle, Indiana. It has 400 employees and is based in Indianapolis. Sales reached $60 million in 2010, with revenues from membership fees and select advertising by highly rated service providers. It started with Mr Oesterle, a former boss of Angie's in a college internship, and his moving to Columbus, Ohio. Oestlerle had difficulty finding good contractors to renovate a 1920's home, and suggested they work together on this idea of a list of reliable contractors based on personal interviews. The company still relies only on personally obtained information.

During the November 2011 to February 2012 period Spanish banks increased holdings of government bonds by 68 billion euros, and Italian banks by 54 billion euros under the ECB's Long Term Financing Operation. That program helped to lower bond yields of the two countries for the 1st quarter of 2012. With Spain's economy facing more austerity measures at a time of 23% unemployment, bond yields have moved back up for Spain in April 2012. The increased holdings of government bonds by Spanish banks increases risks at a time when banks in Spain have not increased lending in the economy and hold a large number of bad mortgages in the country's housing bust.

The $125 billion rescue package adds 10% to Spain's debt, increasing it to 90% of GDP, say analysts. Fitch Ratings says, Spain's debt would reach 95% of GDP in 2015 even if it uses only 60 billion euros of the rescue package to recapitalize banks. An earlier forecast by finance minister Luis de Guindos put the debt to GDP ratio at 78% for 2012. The lack of the architectural underpinnings for a common euro currency such as deposit insurance and guarantees for deposits at eurozone banks, and the fiscal supervision of banks by a European financial authority that goes with it, has resulted in the continued lack of confidence in financial markets after the rescue package.

Experts say entrepreneurs are seen negatively in Germany and a startup failure is likely to be seen as a problem in a resume. Yet many of the small companies with less than 50 million euros in sales were started in the early post war period decades before. These companies with less than 500 employees employ about 60% of German employees, showing their importance. Social Democrats Economics minister Sigmar Gabriel is promoting the idea of increased funding for startups by venture capital and private equity funds, by increasing tax breaks for startups. Germany's Federal Statistics Office figures show 87,000 new companies registered in 2014 through Novemeber, down 28% from the prior decade and 47% below 1996.

Pope Francis meets Bosnia's three presidents in a Council, with each president rotating in office every 8 months. He also addresses a crowd of 65,000 in Sarajevo. Pope Francis told the crowd: " In a world unfortunately rent by conflicts, this land can become a message, attesting that it is possible to live together side by side." A council of Interracial Dialogue to bring together different clerics is working well, says the Vatican's ambassador Luigi Pezzuto. At the level of politics divisions remain as political leaders still promote ethnic nationalism. But overall the Dayton Accords negotiated by Richard Holbrooke of the U.S. are working well. The economy struggles with 50% unemployment and 60% of the workers dependent on the government.

Medtronic's former CEO, Bill George, says Medtronic's plan to reincorporate in Ireland as part of the merger with Covidien is intended to make it possible to use cash piled up overseas. The cash overseas if repatriated to the U.S. would incur corporate taxes of 35%. Medtronic can use its overseas cash resources to finance the acquisition of Covidien. The combination of the two companies will enhance cash flow, says Medtronic's CEO, Omar Ishak. Covidien's overseas cash and future earning from its businesses is not subject to U.S. repatriation taxes. As a result the combined company following merger will have only 40% of total cash "trapped" overseas, compared to 60% before a merger.

What has to give in government oversight and reshaping the debt and costs at General Motors? The auto workers and retirees inspite of all the givebacks still pay only 5% of theirhealthcare costs vs an average of 30% for the rest of Americans with healthcare coverage. With a sharing that reflects the national average GM wouldn't have to shoulder the size of the health care obligations for union workers and retirees of the sum of $47 billion. And the debt holders of GM debt, the bondholders would take a cut of something approaching Senator Corker's proposal to trade debt for equity at a 70% discount. That would reduce the GM debt from $63 billion to less than half that.

With severe global competition expected as there is capacity for manufacturing 100 million cars and a market for only about 55 million according to experts, there will be pressure on prices and margins. GM will emerge as asmaller company after bankruptcy and more automakers will be going after ashrinking market. Any assessment of how well the government does will also have to take into account the benefits to the American economy of stabilizing the auto industry in a period of freefall.

The Supreme Court's ruling against Wyeth knocks down a 2006 Bush administration regulation which declared that permitting product-liability law suits conflicted with "FDA's role "as the expert federal agency responsible for evaluating and regulating drugs." Justice Paul Stevens writing the majority opinion said the Bush position is "entitled to no weight, and was "inherently suspect because no evidence was given in support of its position and the states and the public did not get an opportunity to comment before it was issued. Wyeth had argued that it met FDA guidelines in the label for its antinausea drug Phenergan, and wasn't liable when a 63 year old guitar player lost her arm after receiving the drug.

Easterly's thoughts on how the swing away from individual initiative, innovation and private enterprise hurt developig countries the last time state run enterprises and state intervention in all aspects of the economy became fashionable, in the 40's and into the 60's and 70's, costing decades of lost progress in many countries. He cautions against learning the wrong lessons from the American experience. The housing bubble and the failure of regulation to be modernized to keep up with changing financial scene and the simple failure of ethical and moderation in behaviour and good business practices teaches other lessons than simply going back to letting the state run things which has not worked in the past.

The Putin Medvedev administration is reluctant to lowere the value of the ruble seeing the stable ruble as sign of the hard won recovery of the last decade. The Russian stock market has lost 68% of its value so far in 2008 and the banking sector is affected. Russia has committed about $200 billion in the bailout plan and the central bank has raised intrest ates for the fifth time most by 1 percentage point to reduce capital outflows from the country. For weeks Russia has used its foreign currency reserves to keep the ruble from falling further. In the process it has used up $112 billion in reserves since the summer. An audit of Spain's banking system by the consulting firm Oliver Wyman, shows that Spanish banks would need 53.745 billion euros to be cleaned up if mergers and acquisitions underway are completed. The amount goes up to 59.3 billion euros if this does not happen. Bankia bank will need 24.7 billion euros to meet capital requirements. Three other nationalized banks need 21.5 billion euros, including 3.2 billion euros for Banco Popular. Of the 14 audited banks only 7 need capital infusions. The other banks considered healthy include BBVA, Santander and La Caixa. These findings are similiar to a preliminary finding by Oliver Wyman and estimates provided by Luis de Guindos, Spain's economy minister, that Spanish banks will need 51 billion to 62 billion euros of capital infusion. Spain's secretary of state for the economy, Fernando Jimenez Latorre, says Spain will soon request about 40 billion euros of the 100 billion euro bailout offer for banks negotiated by Spain in June with the EU. It is not clear whether the capital infusion will go directly to Spain's banks as Spain has argued, or go through the Spanish government. The audits were important to provide credibility through independent assessment of losses in Spain's banking system, and remove the fog of uncertainty that is pushing up Spain's borrowing rate in capital markets....

Jair Bolsonaro, a former army officer, is expected to win by a large margin in the runoff election in Brazil against Fernando Haddad of the Brazil Workers Party. Crime, corruption including the Car Wash scandal involving the state oil company and politicians, a deep recession with the fall of commodity prices, have led to a shift in Brazil away from the Workers Party. Polls from Datafolha show about 60% of the vote in runoff going to Bolsanaro. About 30% of supporters say they are voting for something new after the deep recession and failure in providing government services with no money in the budget for adequate spending on infrastructure and services, education and health.  Both the centrist PSDB and the Workers Party that came in following the shift to civilian rule from military dictatorship in the mid-80's failed to win a significant part of the vote. The conservative PSL party only had 5 seats in the outgoing 313 seat house showing the deep dissatisfaction with the existing Congress and politicians in Brazil. Crime is a big issue with 64,000 deaths in Brazil in the last year, with failures in government services, including a failure to tackle a yellow fever epidemic over 2 years, are other issues that have led to the change in the mood of the voters in Brazil. ...

Retail sales in China dropped sharply. Retail sales dropped from double digit increases for most of 2014-2017 to single digits in 2018- sales dropping to 8.1%. Government restrictions to prevent a housing bubble restrained housing sales, and policies to control corporate debt limited growth. Higher inflation for food and housing, have led to asharp pullback in growth of consumer spending.  Trade tensions with the U.S. have hurt consumer sentiment. The feeling that China's growth would stabilize because of its connections to the world economy is fading as consumers see persistent trade tensions with the U.S. including tariffs of upto 60% in tit for tat actions as hurting China's prospects.  The GDP growth is expected to be about 6.5% for 2018 according to government estimates, which experts say is actually much less or even half that as exporters retrench in the face of slack demand in China and lower sales to the U.S.  Rail and other infrastructure projects that were considered unsuitable are now being given approval in efforts to boost the economy. More tax cuts and expanded deficit spending are policies likely to be followed.  At foreign companies no overtime, and job cuts are commonplace especially in the auto industry. ...

Saudis and Russia fail to reach an agreement on cutting production in response to lower demand after the coronavirus crisis, resulting in Saudi decision to boost output and cut prices.  Saudi prince Salman asks ministries to lower budgets for expenditures. Saudi oil production was boosted by 300,000 barrels a day (bbd) to 12.3 million bbd. Saudis also cut oil price which is at about $34 a barrel on March 9, 2020 for Brent crude. Meanwhile behind the rhetoric from Saudis a mediation effort is being made by Mr. Falih from the Saudi side with Mr. Novak of Russia. Mr. Falih is minister of investments. He was the oil minister who negotiated an agreement with Russia in 2016.  The U.S. under president Trump sees oil price reduction as good for the economy in the face of the coronavirus impact. The U.S. oil shale industry will be affected with more bankruptcies, as many companies cannot operate at $30 a barrel. The Saudi budget requires a price of $60 which is why the Saudis favored production cuts but failed to convince Russia. Russia sees no need for production cuts at this time. Russia is also better positioned to handle the oil price decline as its budget is less dependent on oil prices. ...
