The fast food industry in US relies on the franchise model which has been deeply affected by depressed wages, poor working conditions and other worker abuses. Governor Gavin Newsom signs into law on Labor Day 2022, the FAST Recovery Act which established a state council tasked with setting wage standards for the entire franchise and food industry. Workers will now get a seat at the table to set standards for wages, and health and safety standards for the industry. Wages will be set at $22 per hour starting next year for about half a million workers in the franchise and fast food industry in California.

Social and economic changes in American society have come down to an alarming statistic. There are three young women for every two young men in American colleges. At Tulane the freshman class has two thirds women students. At liberal arts colleges the class is usually 60% women. As noted in this report by Susan Dominus in NYT there is a devaluing of college education because men have choices that are higher paying, conservatives have not emphasized college education, and "male drift" is a serious problem leading to male enrolment declining. And once in college men are dropping out at afaster rate. A new test for Prostate Cancer, a test with high accuracy being developed in Britain- in it are proteins shed by prostate tumors in urine are tested.  This test is planned with testing of 200,000 people in Britain with funding of 42 million pounds. It has 0.92 accuracy compared to 0.62-0.75 for the conventional PSA Test. This test tests a different set of proteins. PSA Test is known to have false positives and is not accurate. This will revolutionize the testing for prostate cancer, one of the main cancers affecting men.

Wal-Mart is expected to announce the sixth quarter of declining same store sales in the U.S. By raising prices on some items and reducing prices on others Wal-Mart moved away from Wal-Mart founder Sam Walton's pledge to provide the best prices. Walton built Wal-Mart by promising to transfer much of the benefits of Wal-Mart's sourcing of lower priced goods to customers. The "high-low" technique in pricing is just the opposite of the everyday best price of Sam Walton. In recent years Wal-Mart has lost its touch with its core customer base by trying to attract upscale customers with trendy products and organic foods. The core customers have always been the U.S. households making less than $70,000 a year. This made up 68% of its business. Now this business is under assault by discounting chains and dollar stores. To reduce clutter in its stores, Wal-mart reduced the amount of goods carried from different suppliers, alienating some suppliers. Ironically the new pricing strategies and store design to reduce sprawl came from John Fleming, a former Target executive who became Wal-Mart's chief merchandising officer. Management changes led to Mr Fleming's departure....
