The head of the European Centres for Disease Control ECDC, Dr. Andrea Ammon, says the Delta variant of the coronavirus will make up 70% of all cases in Europe by early August, and 90% of all cases by the end of August. ECD modeling shows that there is a risk of another wave like the one after last summer in Europe. The Delta variant is much more infectious than the UK Alpha variant and the UK variant much more infectious than the original variant. A 50% reduction in non-pharmaceutical interventions such as allowing the staging of events would lead to an increase in infection in all age groups. Latest ECDC data show 34% of people in Europe fully vaccinated and 57% with one dose. One dose offers much less protection. Younger individuals have a lower vaccination rate and are vulnerable. Also vulnerable are the older people not vaccinated yet. About 40% of people over 60 are not yet vaccinated, and 30% of people over 80 years are not yet vaccinated in the European Union. As in the US vaccination varies by region within the EU. All these vulnerable groups can be affected in another wave of the coronavirus similar to after last summer when restrictions were removed. Dr. Ammon is a former advisor to the German government. She says it is important for young people who are not vaccinated to continue to follow the strict social distancing precautions.  This is not happening today as governments are relaxing mask mandates in Britain, France and Spain. Soccer games are coming back to fan filled stadiums increasing the risk. Tourist spots in Portugal and Greece are now looking similar to the vacation spots in Croatia that increased infections in Europe after summer 2020. ...

US life expectancy dropped by 1.5 years to 77.3 years, the largest drop since 1943. This takes life expectancy back to the level in 2003. During the pandemic of 1918 the drop was 11.5 years, showing how much difference vaccines and modern medicine can make. The drop is a result of coronavirus, and added to this are the complications for people with other diseases including chronic liver disease, which is connected to use of alcohol. There was a decline in asthma and cancer related diseases. Delayed treatment for health conditions because of lockdowns and homicide increase were other causes of the drop.

Isolation, stress and disruption of normal diet and exercise will have effects still to be seen, say experts.

Russia ships nuclear fuel, the uranium fuel rods for the Bushehr nuclear plant in Iran, two weeks after the new US intelligence estimate on Iran, after stalling for some time. The Bushehr plant will be under the inspection supervision and control of the Atomic Energy Agency, and Russia has obtained guarantees that the AEA will be allowed to ensure that the fuel will only be used for the power plant. Note that the U.S. was informed two weeks ago about this, and the U.S. quietly supported the idea now with the idea that it encourages Iran to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. What it does is to change the whole picture about Iran as a threat to peace in the Middle East. Donald Trump's campaign and the Republican National Committee raises $64 million in July 2016 through a digital and mailing effort that helps to bring in a large number of small donations- about two thirds of it. The fund raising effort for Trump brings a total of $82 million in July, just short of the $90 million raised by Hillary Clinton that month. Much of the digital fund raising effort was made possible by efforts made by the RNC to improve its mailing lists since the last presidential campaign. Many of the Trump donations are made from the Trump website buttons of $10, $25, $50, and by an offer to match this with Trump's own personal finances. Hillary Clinton is also ramping up her fund raising. Trump now has $74 million on hand, up from $1.5 million at one point, and Hillary Clinton has $102 million. It includes offering state of the art light water reactor technologies for electricity generation, and a substantive package of nuclear R&D cooperation. This is a set of terms offered by the US and European partners as a combination and presented to Iran by the EU's foreign policy chief Javier Solana. Iranian negotiator Ali Larijani stated in response that Iran was ready to enter a another round of talks to reach a balanced conclusion and Bush called it a positive response. Robert Einhorn, a proliferation expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, argues that the main issues for Iran are prestige and security. And the only way the U.S. can address this he said is for the Bush administration to restore normalized relations with Iran.
