After the first round of elections Mauricio Macri threw his support to Milei. Macri was president from 2015 to 2019 when pro-market reforms led to unrestrained borrowing from overseas investors. It failed leading to high inflation and turning to the IMF for loan of $57 billion. The 'Querdenker" ("lateral thinkers") movement in Germany now has branches in 50 towns across the country, and calls for freedom of opinion, expression, and assembly. Some of these protests are against the coronavirus restrictions, particularly because of economic difficulties and cultural attitudes towards restricted life during the first and now second lockdowns. It covers all backgrounds including far right and far left fringes and people of different views on other issues. A Berlin demonstration in late August brought out about 38,000 people and briefly some demonstrators attempted to rush into the Reichstag or parliament building. The police in Germany can only act if the town and municipal authority says it is right to intervene against unruly behaviour in demonstrations. The other factor protecting the Basic Law which protects freedoms in the German Constitution is that the courts in Germany have acted in favor of the demonstrators so that there remains a fair balance between the need for covid restrictions and the need to demonstrate against these restrictions affecting the right to work and economic freedoms. As well as the pushback against these restrictions for cultural and other reasons.  The initial fear of being infected is now being strongly offset by fears of the economic consequences of an extended lockdown particularly for vulnerable groups who cannot work from home such as in construction, manufacturing, transportation, retail and tourism related industries. The next big demonstration is set for Saturday November 14 in the eastern city of Leipzig with about 20,000 demonstrators expected and police getting reinforcements from neighboring states and federal police. ...

During this trip she spent time at the Pasteur Institute where her mother Shyamala Gopalan once worked. From Mexico and South Korea one has another side of Harris where she has used official trips to hold discussions with women's groups to take notes and ask questions to understand women's issues around the world. This makes her exceptional as a choice for women in 2024, not just for reproductive rights but for a person who will listen with profound interest to what they say and relate to them. There is a saying in India that prime minister Modi also cites which says society does well only when it gives women the best place to make their own unique contribution. As Mr. Mitsotakis of the New Democracy party takes over as prime minister from Mr. Tsipras this report from Greece reflects on what happened under Mr. Tsipras with his call for no in the referendum on the Eurozone economic loan package that set austerity cuts in Greece. Mr Tsipras was unable to reverse the loan agreements set by the eurozone leaders. There is much to reflect on austerity policies also for Germany and northern European countries in the events of the last five years leading to the loss of confidence in major parties in Europe and in eurozone countries. Austerity policies also have undermined public confidence. Yet in the Greek case the lack of transparency bad finances were of another magnitude that called for responsibility to be taken by internal groups within Greece. In the end this proved little except that the eurozone was expanded too hastily for countries such as Greece, hurting the eurozone, the idea of Europe, and Greece.

This would increase cargo handling capacity and reduce turnaround time. The current visit of Denmark prime minister Mitte to India also brings with it opportunities for Danish collaboration to improve logistics system in India. Maersk is a Danish company that is the largest shipping and logistics company in the world. Engineer and climber Kelsey Olson makes cell towers for 5G infrastructure work. WSJ shows her at work - she has no fear of heights. Ms. Olson is 36, and Denver based division manager of Tower Engineering Professionals, a North Carolina company that helps telecom companies upgrade to 5G. She joined at age 23. She not only manages about 10 engineers to design the structures, but also works outdoors with teams that inspect these towers and retrofit with new equipment for 5G. Once high up in a climb in the Pacific Northwest, she could see a purple sunset, from way above the pine trees.

Russia is raising taxes on the rich, high earners and companies to keep military spending at levels not seen since the height of the Cold War of 6% of GDP. This is part of effort to keep the economy growing and standards of living stable as it pursues a long term policy of trying to push its borders further to the west in the Ukraine region and confront what it sees as unwarranted NATO expansion to its borders. Russia also with China's support is conducting its policy to show that it is undeterred by Sweden and Finland joining NATO or the early setbacks in its Ukraine war effort. This happens as China is moving to less strident positions in its relations with the EU and the US and working for some level of working relations on trade and economy with EU and the US as its economy slows down.

Lee, Nicholas and Harris of the WSJ describe the responses being considered by president Obama to Russia's hacking of DNC, and other cyberattacks during the U.S. presidential election. Obama said the goal will be "to send a clear message to Russia or others not to do this to us because we can do stuff to you." He said some of this would be done publicly and other things would be done where the Russians know but not everybody else. Mr. McFaul, a former ambassador to Russia, is cited here saying that declassification of intelligence by president Obama in the remaining weeks in office is needed so that all ambiguity about Russian involvement is removed. Elections are coming up in Germany and France in 2017 and both president Obama and the Republican Congress leadership see the need to prevent any further cyberattacks on the U.S. or Western Europe.

The surge in the value of the dollar is creating turmoil in the world economy. The dollar reached 1.04 to the euro and 118 Japanese yen by Dec. 15, 2016. This means Japanese and European exports will be more competitive and lower U.S corporate earnings.  Emerging market economies hold about $200 billion in dollar denominated debt and this will become harder to repay with the surge in the value of the dollar. China faces larger capital outflows and the Bank of Japan has to navigate a new situation. Some countries such as Mexico are raising interest rates to reduce inflation as the value of the peso drops. The prospect of trade wars is also another aspect of uncertainty with the new Trump administration in the U.S.

It is similar to what happened when Harry Truman had to persuade a war weary country and the US Congress in 1948 to pass bill for aid to Greece and Turkey to prevent an imminent Communist takeover with support from the Soviet bloc. McConnell will be remembered for his action, so will Speaker Mike Johnson and Senator Schumer and other Republicans, Democrats that worked hard to get a decisive vote for Ukraine aid of 79 For to 18 Against, with 15 Republicans and 3 Democrats voting against. Alabama Senator shifted to a yes vote saying most of that $61 billion of aid to Ukraine will be spent in the US to hire American workers in defense industries. A $10 billion loan provision with forgiveness included was a way to get the former president to support it. On the third try America's Congress gets it through in a decisive manner with overwhelming support. This is not unlike the efforts before, when Aid to Greece and Turkey had to be passed through Congress under president Harry Truman in 1948 with both countries facing a danger of Communist takeover supported by the Soviet bloc with only US support keeping democracy in both Greece and Turkey. Even in 1948 to a war weary country Harry Truman had to persist and get the support he did from the US Congress as president Biden did today April 23, 2024. ...

California introduces vaccine mandate for all school children. All schoolchildren from elementary school to high school will have to get vaccinated once the government completes full approval of vaccines for children. The government has fully approved children's vaccine for over 16 years and emergency authorization for 12-15 years old children. California's governor Newsom has taken this step for vaccine mandates after defeating a recall effort for governor recently.

Also helping reach this decision is the result in Los Angeles School district, where the vaccine mandate for all school children over 12 years has resulted in cutting by half the number of daily infections of schoolchildren. Schools reopened in Los Angles last month and this is an encouraging sign that schools can be kept open with the right policies.

While attention is placed on Brazil for coronavirus, neighboring Argentina has an economic crisis with debt of $324 billion, reaching 90% of GDP. The new Peronist party government in Argentina is supported by the IMF in negotiations with creditors, as it faces the coronavirus and needs to free up resources from debt payments to tackle the crisis. Its proposal to Ad Hoc group of creditors including investment funds Black Rock and Fidelity is for a three year grace period on debt payments, 62% reduction of interest  amounting to $37 billion, and 5% reduction of capital or $3.6 billion. Earlier governments mishandled the economy leading to overborrowing on an unsustainable basis. Argentina has defaulted on debt 20 times in its history. The last being in 2001 with debt of $100 billion. The pattern of overborrowing and mismanagement by administrations modeled on free market economies has continued. Lenders, borrowers, and the government have not acted prudently knowing this history. ...

The British government called for 250,000 volunteers to help the National Health Service in its programs for older people. Instead it got 750,000 volunteers, in an overwhelming response. Hundreds of community based groups have also sprung up across Britain, with additional tens of thousands of volunteers seeking to help, says this report in NYT by Mark Landler. It is a massive and spirited display of national solidarity at a time of national crisis. As Queen Elizabeth II said in her television address: "Our pride in who we are is not in the past, it defines both our present and our future."

It also shows how in an affluent society one can now see the people who really matter when it comes down to this, the everyday effort to get through a day or a week at a time, says Landler. Everyone from garbage collection, grocery clerks, delivery service, and pharmacy workers, get us through each day, each week.
