The European Union is making good use of the crisis in Ukraine to ramp up its shift to renewable energy. This WSJ report shows charts of where the EU is focusing its efforts from conservation, heat pumps, hydrogen, to wind and solar. Wind and solar show massive increases by 2030. By 2030 the European Union plans to increase wind and solar energy from 20 billion cubic metres to 170 billion cubic metres according to estimates from The European Commission shown in this graph by WSJ.

By the end of 2022 two thirds of Russian natural gas imports to the EU will have been replaced and by 2030 all of such imports will be replaced.

The FBI arrests a 21 year old member of the Massachusetts National Air Guard for the US Department of Defense documents leak. He was trained as a cyber transport systems specialist. He was assigned to the 102nd Intelligence Wing at Otis Air National Guard Base, part of Joint Base Cape Cod. There are units at the base that process intelligence collected from drones. Yet there is no explanation of the airman needing to have access to daily slides of the Ukraine war, much less the daily deluge of briefings at the highest level of CIA, NSA, and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence. This remains a question on which there are no answers.

The most important response in the Ukraine invasion comes with Chancellor Olaf Scholz's speech to the German parliament. Berlin will not tolerate Russia forcing states in Eastern Europe into its sphere of influence, Scholz told German parliamentarians who stood up several times to applaud. No more hesitant steps. Germany also stands with the Russian people for historical reconciliation, an important signal to the Russian people who in no way are united in support of this invasion of a neighbor and a fraternal people, Scholz stressed. This WSJ podcast looks at the Chernobyl nuclear site, the place where a nuclear disaster happened in 1986. About 200 Ukraine workers are at the plant. The plant was taken over by Russian forces on the first day of the war. WSJ reporters talked to workers at the plant. To protect against the nuclear contamination a giant structure of steel and concrete was built around the plant. Since 1986 the plant is completely closed down. The job of workers is to keep the nuclear waste safe underground. This report says the 12 hour shift crew was not allowed to leave and is working for days under considerable fatigue and stress.

This article in The Guardian on Pakistan's economy was written over 3 years ago and many of the problems in the economy shown here have increased with the pandemic and the war in Ukraine's effect on food supplies and inflation. New governments in 2022 will face economic difficulties that are worsening in many developing economies. Foreign currency reserves were at $21 billion in March 2022, with total imports of $56 billion in the 2021 fiscal year according to the World Bank. Surging inflation and drop in the value of the currency in 2022 are creating new difficulties in an already difficult situation making good governance for the economy a major priority.

Shortages of natural gas lead to a 40% rise in prices. China is bidding high for gas supplies as it faces shortages of natural gas for heating during the coming winter. The UK and Europe also face shortages. Russia has the largest reserves of natural gas and is by far the largest producer. The start of the undersea Nordstream 2 pipeline avoids use of existing Russian pipeline through Ukraine. It is seen as a way to bring in more supplies to Europe.

Australia is another large producer of natural gas. China is now changing its import ban of Australian coal and natural gas as it faces a cold winter.

This editorial in the WSJ shows the conduct of president Biden to keep all sides of the picture in consideration to bring a peaceful end to the Ukraine war with so far horrendous casualties on all sides, without escalation to new levels. These threats of escalation include nuclear threats. In this sense president Biden has serious responsibilities on behalf of the world separate from opinion on either side of the war, so does Mr. Jinping and Mr. Modi, and the leaders of other parts of the world who have not created the events for this conflict and represent a large part of the world and its peoples who are directly affected and want no further escalation period.

The danger of the nuclear plant at Zaporizhzhia being taken off the Ukrainian grid by Russia is that it would then have to be cooled with backup systems which are not as reliable. It was the meltdown of the nuclear reactor after a tsunami that caused the disaster at Fukushima, Japan. President Macron called Putin about this and Putin asks the International Atomic Energy Agency to send its team to the plant in his response. Large scale contamination would result in Europe if the plants cooling systems failed during the nuclear plant being taken off the Ukrainian grid and shutdown. In normal times this plant provides one fifth of the electricity supply in Ukraine.

Here is what Starmer said about Biden- “No, we had a really good bilateral yesterday. The meeting planned between Xi and Biden is important for stable US China relations after the Trump administration angry rhetoric, the Covid pandemic, and when imbalances in the poorly managed trade relationship with the entire supply chain shifted to China with millions of its American jobs has shaken working class communities in the US. China's and Xi's views on Hong Kong and Taiwan have also affected the relations. After the Ukraine war this will be the first meeting between the two leaders, and follows a visit by German chancellor Scholz to Beijing. Under Bush America appeared to be distracted by middle east wars, under Obama and Trump America appeared weak or angry but not resolute. Under Biden America appears resolute and sure of itself. This makes a difference for US China relations. Following the Ukraine war both the US and Germany, and China, appear to have grasped the dangers of nuclear threats such as were made in recent weeks. India has also shown its serious concerns about wars for territorial gains, and the world community of nations has expressed this through the words and actions of UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres speaking for Europe, and the rest of the world.  Under Biden America seeks decent Competition with China and not conflict, and this is in the interest of both countries and of all the countries in the world. Neither China or America represent the largest share of the world's peoples, and in a world of advanced technologies other regions such as India, Europe, South East Asia and Japan, have just as great a determination and influence to seek a mutually beneficial peaceful coexistence in the interests of all the peoples of the world including the continents of Africa and Latin America. ...

US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi will spend Tuesday night August 2 in Taipei, Taiwan. China has threatened severe consequences and Taiwanese forces are on alert. Yet with over $1 trillion in China's exports to US and EU in 2021 the response will have to take this into account as also the US and EU to redesign its supply chains. This is the first trip of a senior US official to Taiwan as Speaker Pelosi comes next to the Vice President to succeed the presidency. The US response to the Russian attack on Ukraine was made in Biden's word as a deterrent to China in its role in the Indo-Pacific region. The Pelosi trip may be a reflection of this policy that seeks to maintain the US position that Indo-Pacific is international waters, that US policy will continue as before undeterred by actions such as the Russian attack on Ukraine with the support of China. And that US will engage fully with allies in the Indo-Pacific- Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia and Taiwan. And that is doing this with the cooperation of its allies in the region- Australia, Japan and India. US and EU imports from China are $541 and $522 billion over $1 trillion for 2022. Loss of even a significant portion of these exports from major tensions in the region would have a severe impact on Chinese economic growth. The US and EU are already engage in redesigning the supply chain and would also face problems in a transition similar to the gas rationing in Germany after cutoff of Russian supplies. For what a ruble buys in Russia , 2.7 times what a dollar buys in the US, Russia gets alot of bang out of its defense budget of $149 billion, about $401 billion (Purchasing power) compared to US $997 billion. Add to this Russia is now a war economy in the war with Ukraine and concentrates its forces in one theatre not four as the US spread out over Indo-Pacific, Europe and Middle East and Korean peninsula. This is the reason behind most of DJT's actions reflecting realities in defense. Shut down the Middle East theatre which is also what the American people want by moving everything in the direction of economic progress, turning down the revolutionary and sectarian ideologies that roiled Egypt of Suez, Iraq and Syria, Afghanistan and Pakistan in the 60's and dragged the world into costly insane wars. And do this with the consensus of Russia, China and India. Wind down the war in Europe- accept the Russians as a Northern European power with a settlement of the Ukraine conflict, and let Germany lead Europe's defense. Manage the relationship in the Indo-Pacific with India and South and Southwest Asian investments in economic infrastructure that will offset China's rapid growth of the last three decades by incentivizing South Asia and South western Asia parts of which were called the Middle East by the Britons and now can be rengaged in the South /Southwest Asian group of nations led by the US. This is the policy for the next 25 years to 2050 that a Russia, Germany, US, China, India consensus sees as a constructive future for the people of the world.   ...

Efforts to bring the two sides together for ceasefire succeed for Black Sea but hit snags along the way. Russia wanting to get sanctions lifted on it's Agricultural Bank to lift grain and fertilizer exports. A separate deal on not attacking energy infrastructure was negotiated.  Fundamentally NATO needed to be reconstituted at the end of the Cold War. Russia's apparent weakness was temporary as it converted to a market economy from the Soviet model. It's GDP is not a correct representation of it's capabilities and need for respect as an advanced European economy. With US-Russian cooperation nothing like Syria and Venezuelan disasters would have happened disrupting the fabric of American and European democratic systems. Russian conditions include ones that were clear from the early days of the war. Ukraine joining NATO threatens Russian security. That this was not to be allowed. And Ukraine to relinquish territory now controlled by Russia in Crimea and in Ukraine's east. DJT in the US has ruled out joining NATO for Ukraine. These territories have been integrated into Russia and it is unlikely that this would change so that continuation of the war after so many lives are lost doesn't make sense. Europeans particular Baltic Republics and Poland are concerned about Russian intentions- this too is not going to change by continuation of the war. It can be addressed by putting in concrete safeguards. ...
