Tata and WIPRO executives say they depend on in-house training programs because many of the engineering graduates in the recruitment pool are not qualified. Recruitment firm NIIT Ltd. says 75% of technical graduates and 85% of general graduates are not fully qualified to work in information technology and other industries, based on assessment tests conducted by the firm. This is happening even as the engineering colleges in India have seats for 1.5 million graduates, according to the National Association for Software and Services. The problem is that the focus is on rote learning, and not on comprehension and critical thinking skills. By keeping the tution at low levels the revenue is not enough to pay teachers salaries at decent levels and attract good teachers. The schools do not generate the strong reading and comprehension skills necessary for jobs in growing fields. Annual surveys by Pratham looked at grade school performance of 13,000 schools across India. This shows about half of the fifth graders cannot read at a second grade level....

The inability to convince farmers to trade land for a fair settlement in money, new homes, schools and other benefits and to make this a win-win proposiion between farmers and companies is holding up abut $98 billion in investments in steel plants and other plants. A bill in Parliament would require companies to negotiate directly with farmers and reach a settlement that is good for farmers to resolve what is increasingly a serious problem. The Biden administration makes its decision- it will continue the tariffs president Trump placed on about half of Chinese imports into the US. It also seeks new talks with China on trade. One kid watched youtube for 18 hours a day and now the way back to mental and physical health is to stop using the iphone or android phone altogether. This maybe of some comfort to countries without the internet connections prevailing in so called advanced countries. Even there the improvements are coming with a cost such as the proliferation of watching Tik Tok from China in India and China with poor quality content that is likely to fragment peoples attention making it harder to lead healthy lives that we once took for granted before the advent of Mr. Job's screen enabled phone. ...

German aid for the project was debated in parliament because of the work on the Rufiji river and disruption for the Selous Game Reserve used by tourists. The area for work to be done is 1000 square kilometres and the Game Reserve is covering 50,000 square kilometres so that efforts can be made to meet electricity goals and maintain the Reserve in its new form. President Magufuli is moving forward with the project with Tanzania's pressing needs for electricity. In recent years, Brazil, China and India have also placed these concerns as a priority in developing their hydropower resources.
