Krugman sees Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel and her Finance Minister Peer Steinbruck stalling an overall stimulus plan for the whole of the EU. Merkel told a political party meeting that Germany "wasn't going to participate in this senseless race for billions." And Steinbruck said Britian was engaging in "crass Keynesianism". True Germany has not been on the debt financed consumption binge that the UK has been in and does not have a housing bubble bursting like the UK, but says Krugman Germany is also facing a crisis like the rest of Europe. Ifo, German Research Insttitute points to the worsening crisis in Germany as the worst since the 1940's. Part of the reason is that Germany is abig exporter and its medium sized companies are big exporters and a large part of the economy. With the slowdown in China and the rest of Asia these exports have been hit hard. See the links to this. What happens without acoordinated response in the EU? Krugman warns that it would lead to leakages in which the advantages of the stimulus by the rest of the EU would not be as effective as with a coordinated response including Germany the biggest EU nation. He expects Merkel to wake up to the need for this once she sees the new numbers. ...

The European Commission cuts 15 nation euro area growth forecast for 2008 from 2% to 1.4%. For the 27 nation European Union the forecast is dropping from 1.7% to 1.3%. Link this to discussions at OPEC in Vienna and one can see why the Saudis use the argument that high oil prices can lead to a collapse in demand and a collapse in oil prices not helping consumers or producers, when a stable price that reflects the fragile financial markets in the west would better accomodate both sides.

Coordinated action by the governments of France, Britain and Germany each with its own package depending on its own circumstances but committing over a trillion dollars to rescue plans for financial institutions. In Britain the government moved to take majority stakes in 2 of its largest banks, the Royal Bank of Scotland, and the newly combied bank of Lloyds TSB and HBOS in exchange for a $64 billion capital infusion. In Berlin the German government setup a 480 billion euros package consisting mostly of loan guarantees, with 400 billon euros in guarantees for inter-bank loans and another $80 billion euros for direct injections of capital to help weak balance sheets and purchase toxic or illiquid assets of German banks that are at the brink of collapse. The French have setup their own 360 billion euros package. The French government will create a fund to raise money to guarantee debt for upto 5 years in a bid to make cash available to banks. The banks can access these funds in exchange for putting up their own collateral, including debt not currently accepted by the ECB. And a state sponsored company will provide upto 40 billion euros in direct capital injections to banks that request it in exchange for equity stakes. In addition Netherlands made $220 billion euros available for capital injection into banks and other efforts and Spain will insure upto 100 billion euros in bank debt. Britain's step are the boldest ones yet and Britain's crisis is also likely to be one of the worst because of years of leveraging and overborrowing. But the German financial system is also under heavy strain and strong swift action was necessary to keep its banking system functioning. While other countries have setup the funds for capital injection like other European countries and the USA, Britain has also take the lead in taking majority stakes in two of its largest banks by Monday, October 13, with the departure of the executives who got these banks into such a mess. Gordon Brown has shown cosiderable leadership in this crisis and has been at the forefront in proposing and acting on workable solutions and swift response while Germany and the USA lagged behind. France's Sarkozy's contribution has been in the area of global coordination which he has argued and worked for and successfully achieved during the last 2 weeks....

Economists are callg it the adverse feedback loop, it is basically a situation where things start somewhere as with morgage securitization in the USA, and then spread in ahost of different ways through the economy in the USA and in ahost of other economies in interrelated fashion, compounding and worsening the original problem at every turn and every few months. This makes it harder to control and makes whatever steps that look aggressive at the time they are taken, become modest at the next turn in a few months. In February 2009, job losses of about 500,000 a month, and falling corporate profits create loan defaults, which hurt banks beyonfd the original mortgage problems. The banks falling stock prices along with loan defaults make it harder for them to raise capital and more reluctant to lend. All this cuts into spending on cars, factory equipment and other investment, feeding the cycle of job cuts and falling profits.

Paul Krugman, Nobel prize winning economist points out an astonishing fact about the 2016 U.S. presidential election- U.S. television networks nightly news devoted only 32 minutes in 2016 to all policy issues combined. And these networks devoted 100 minutes to Clinton emails. He calls this "disgraceful."  For weeks at a time in September and October the main television networks lacked the integrity and courage to ask questions and persist on the major questions facing the country of the economy, correcting income distribution that has been skewed away from the middle and working class, infrastructure rebuilding, education and healthcare, and what the policy proposals of each candidate would do for the country. Krugman does not mention this but the media devoted hardly any time to the economic plan devised by Trump that respected economists and economic analysis showed would increase the deficit by $5.3 trillion, and lead to a short term temporary increase in growth followed by a sharp decline. The worst thing that could happen to middle and working class families struggling to recover from the blow to their finances from the last recession.  The cyber hacking of a U.S. presidential election by a foreign power never received the unanimous rejection that it deserved from the television networks, not just Fox News as Krugman points out, but by all the networks. The future landscape of the media needs assessment to bring in new ideas and new entrants to bring constructive improvements, and for older media organizations to rebuild after the loss of confidence among young people. Only about a quarter of young people in the U.S. have confidence in the large media organizations news coverage according to surveys done recently. There are other pressures coming from the tech world that make it imperative to do this. Many experts point to the destructive effect of social media in spreading rumors or information disguised as facts, which are spread instantly by Twitter and Facebook, without any obligation to check the facts. This is also dangerous with a public that is now divided between better educated and less educated along political lines, older more settled in their views people, and younger people quicker in looking for the facts and checking things out before believing them. ...

Hitachi's conversion to a leaner, more profit conscious company, learning from rivals, GE, Siemens, IBM and large Korean companies. CEO, Nakanishi, graduated from Stanford with a computer science degree in 1979, during a break from Hitachi. He takes a hands on approach to management and brings this approach to tough assignments to learn what is going wrong. He moved to San Jose, to figure out why the hard disk drive business Hitachi bought from IBM for $2.05 billion was losing money. There he found quality problems were causing 60% of the hard drives coming off the production line with defects. After fixing the problems and achieving 10% profit margins Nakanishi put the company up for sale. Western Digital bought the company for $4.8 billion. His hands on approach includes meeting directly with public officials and ministers in governments around the world that buy its nuclear plants, high speed trains and large machinery. To maintain its preferred bidder status Nakanishi met with Britain's transport minister during the switch in government to the Conservative party in 2010. In his approach he is part of a new breed of Japanese executives, some with education in the U.S., such as Toyota's new CEO, Akio Toyoda, and others such as Toshiba's CEO, Norio Sasaki, who are eager to break away from the mold. Like Toshiba, Hitachi has shifted away from its consumer product lines. Hitachi consumer products are expected to make up only 10% of sales in the coming fiscal year. Emphasis is on the industrial products from nuclear plants to power plant equipment and high speed trains that powered Hitachi from its early beginnings as a maker of mining equipment in the 1920's. These executives are vigilant about a "Not Invented Here Syndrome" typical of large Japanese companies. Nakanishi says there is a lot Japanese companies can learn from rivals about cost and strategies. The experience came with hard knocks. In March 2009, Hitachi announced the biggest loss for a Japanese company upto that time of $9.9 billion. As head of the power and industrial business Nakanishi lost a contract to build a power plant in the Unted Arab Emirates to Korean companies. Compared to Hitachi, Toshiba's strategy is to emphasize industrial products such as nuclear reactors but also keep a presence in consumer products because Sasaki's view is that consumer products require smaller investments and generate cash flow. The Obama administration was slow to respond to the democracy movement in Libya. France's Sarkozy and Britain's Cameron led the effort to support the Libyan rebels with airpower, no -fly-zones, and military assistance. As the Assad regime uses fighter planes, helicopter gunships and artillery against its own people and heavily populated areas, the Europeans distracted by the economic crisis, and the Obama administration following its earlier pattern of slow response in supporting democracy efforts, have failed to take an active role in helping the democracy movement in Syria.

Chief Justice Roberts let the Obama healthcare law stand arguing that the individual mandate for everyone to carry health insurance acted as a tax, and was on these grounds constitutional. Justice Roberts found middle ground by first rejecting the Obama's administration's argument that asking every American to buy health insurance was legal under the commerce clause, and following this with the a non partisan approach that found the mandate legal under the tax clause. Roberts was guided by the writings of an eminent legal authority, Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes. Roberts referred to this in his opinion saying: "It is well established that if a statute has two possible meanings, one of which violates the constitution, courts should adopt the meaning that does not do so." Legal scholars speculate whether Roberts changed his vote later on or whether the Justice had used the questions in the hearings on the law to explore the idea that the law could be constitutional on different grounds. During the arguments in the hearings Roberts said: "The idea that the mandate is something separate from whether you want to call ita penalty or tax just doesn't seem to make much sense."...
