The move by Peugeot and Fiat Chrysler to merge is seen as an effort to use consolidation as a way to tackle depressed demand. Ford and GM are struggling in foreign markets, as Toyota and VW have expanded in foreign markets, and Geely has expanded in China with stakes in Daimler and Volvo AB. Added costs for the shift to electric cars, higher emissions standards,  are also hurting car makers. Global new car sales of 96 million in 2018 are expected to decline by 4% in 2019, and remain sluggish, with the U.S. China trade war and Brexit taking its toll. Some car companies are particularly affected. Chrysler's European car factories ran at about 52% in 2018, well below European industry average of 73%.

Tesla which had 11% of the new electric cars registered in 2024 through July, suddenly goes into free fall with registrations dropping to 3% and a 33% decline in the European EV market. From being second only to VW in EV market in Germany Tesla is not with a model even in the top 10. Tesla had got the support of the Scholz government to put abig factory near Berlin. Tesla CEO Musk's politics is having some impact with endorsement of the AfD by Musk seen as interference in German elections. The Tesla Y is priced at $74,000 another hurdle for buyers. And now there are many rivals from Germany and China. In an expanding market Tesla has lost 60% in registrations in first half of 2025 showing how deeply. BYD of China has a entry model Dolphin Surf for $20,000 in Germany, and has increased sales by 290%. Still Chinese car makers will only have 12% of the EV market and it is VW that is a winner in the competitive market in Europe. VW has ID.3 Pure for under $30,000 and in 2026 plans ID.2 Pure for under $25,000. ...

Six years after the VW diesel emissions scandal was uncovered in September 2015 by the California clean air agency, CARB, perceptions have changed in Germany. This report says the charges leveled against the defendants including former CEO include organized commercial fraud and tax evasion. The grounds for this are that thousands of former VW customers were able to claim tax credits in Germany for the vehicle misstated low emissions levels. In Germany organized fraud is subject to up to 10 years in jail. German experts cited here say it is very unlikely that higher management were no aware of the effort to distort emissions results. 

Much has changed in Germany since then. The auto industry has shifted away from diesel to electric cars. German federal government no longer sees Germany's auto industry in the same way that it did in the early years under Merkel.

Tesla's plans for a new battery factory that would reduce the cost of producing electric batteries to bring down the cost of its electric cars to $35,000. It could travel 200 miles on a single charge.The new battery would reduce battery cost by 30% in the first year. It would reach full production by 2020. Average cost is around $400 per kilowatt hour, according to experts and Tesla will be striving to cut that in half. Estimated cost of the plant is $4-$5 billion, with $2 billion coming from Tesla. Tesla says it will raise $1.6 billion with a bond issue. Production would start in 2017.

As Tesla evolves into a mass manufacturer of automobiles it plans to turn to debt and equity markets for more capital. Tesla has about 455,000 net orders for the Model 3, mass market version of its electric car. The production line has to accelerate quickly from production of 2000 Model 3 cars per week at the end of 2016 to 10000 at the end of 2018. A steep jump which Tesla CEO Musk calls "production hell" that he has bought a ticket for.  Part of the problem is being short of capital for its ambitious program. In the past Tesla has planned to have cash on hand as reserve of $1 billion at the end of each quarter. Current plans call on spending $2 billion in cash in the second half of 2017 from the $3 billion in cash on hand at the end of the last quarter.

With profits of $11-12 billion at GM and Ford Motor in 2022 and $11 billion at Stellantis for the first half of the year there is sentiment among union workers that workers wages should be raised. Ford Motor says profits go into huge investments in the electric car industry transformation. Wages suffered from the collapse of the auto industry in the 2009 period and have only gradually recovered since, falling to $16 per hour as an entry point wage going up to $32 an hour. Unions are looking for wage increases of up to 40%. A 25% wage increase was negotiated recently for an electric car plant run by GM and its partner.

GM is pushing for scuttling of the California ban on gas powered cars in 2035. The US Senate is set to vote next week to revoke California's emissions waiver. About 35 Democrat members of Congress support Republicans in this effort to scrap California's ban on gas powered cars in 2035. Zero emissions vehicles make up 20% of sales in California far behind the goal set of 35%. Enthusiasm for electric cars is waning after the lack of technological advances in cutting cost. The lack of rare earth minerals such as dyspromium for electric magnets that is 94% controlled by China means less of it can be imported into the US. China has invented refining technologies to convert the mining materials into the rare earth mineral giving it a monopoly as shown in the WSJ. ...

Electric vehicles sales are plateauing in 2024 growing from 7.4% to 7.8%. The former president describes an EV mandate. No EV mandate for all cars to be electric exists. The action taken by president Biden is for all cars to meet greenhouse gas emission targets that would require 50 percent of cars to be electric vehicles by 2030. Michigan as the home of the auto industry is heavily influenced by the auto industry. Revised auto fuel efficiency standards win the support of GM, Ford, Chrysler, Honda and Hyundai. These standards would lower the average fuel economy to 54.5 miles per gallon by 2025, a decline from the initial target of 56.2 mpg. The revised proposal calls for a 5% average annual increase in fuel economy for cars and a 3.5% increase for light trucks through 2021. After 2021 both cars and trucks have to meet a 5% annual increase. Useful innovation in the new standards is to provide credits for hybrid pickup trucks, and give credits for technological advances that improve fuel economy but don't show up in EPA tests such as the one that shuts of the engine when a car is idling. Other credits would be offered for solar roof panels on electric vehicles. It includes incentives for "promoting early market penetration of tailpipe CO2/fuel consumption reducing technologies." This comes after a long period in which the U.S. lagged behind other countries in fuel economy. It could be one of the main achievements of the Obama administration, and help build a new auto industry around new technologies....

Both scientists took only half a day off when they got married. Both are children of immigrants to Germany from Turkey. They both cycle to work. Mr. Shin says "I don't have a car. I am not going to get a plane. What's life changing is to be able to impact something in the medical field." The electric batteries used in today's electric cars use technology developed by a Japanese scientist and professor who also worked at Toshiba in the face of many challenges. ...

Super tipping points in climate change action for decarbon ization can occur through relatively small interventions in policy for electric cars, plant based alternative foods, and for green fertilizers, say experts in a report from the Davos Forum in Switzerland. A super tipping point happens when a zero carbon solution becomes more competitive than a  existing high carbon option. More sales lead to cheaper products creating feedback loops that lead to exponential growth and a rapid takeover, says the report.

China's own local companies have moved so fast and completely to dominate the China and world market for electric cars  in a few years 2019-2025. Looking back in 2030 the Musk China factory with declining sales in China of 6% may only result in China having completely outmaneuvered the US in China's and world electric car markets. BYD makes its own batteries in house with new technologies, the competitive landscape in China makes Tesla simply one of many small companies most of whom are consolidating.
