The Biblioteca Alexandrina, as a symbol of the new Egypt. This library dates back to classical antiquity. Youths formed a human cordon to protect the new library during the weeks of protests in Alexandria. The library's director, Ismail Serageldin, says the people love the library and protect it. He says the library is revising its work program to operate from now on as the focal point for the promotion of reform and civil liberties. In 2002, the library opened with a soaring structure designed by the Norwegian architectural firm Snohetta. It was funded by Unesco, the Egyptian government and other Arab countries, Mr Serageldin says the library is spreading the values of democracy, pluralism, freedom of expression, tolerance, diversity, which he is hoping is taking root in the younger generation. The library had 1.5 million visitors and 700 events in 2010. It has 4 museums, a planetarium, a children's science center, a library for the blind and 8 research institutes. It holds 1.6 million books, including a gift of 500,000 books from the Bibliotheque Nationale de France. The library has access to 50,000 electronic journals, and houses an archive of every page on the internet. We taught a lot of the kids who are demonstrating and protesting how to use the internet and how to use social media, and he is glad it has been put to good use, says the chief librarian, Sohair Wastawy. Wastawy is now dean of libraries at Illinois State University. Debate at the library has been open and and annual confernece is held by its Arab Reform Forum to promote human rights and civil society. A website is run to facilitate communication between Arab NGO's. Vartan Gregorian, a trustee of the library, who formerly headed the New York Public Library, says Serageldin has been a marvelous defendor of freedom and scientific thought....

Building extensive subway systems in large cities is the next focus for China's infrastructure building effort. China's prime minister, Li Keqiang supports "new urbanization, with people at the center." Building convenient mass transit for cities with subways and light rail is seen as a way to improve living in urban environments. Other related priorities are water supply, garbage disposal and more sidewalks. Subway lines reaching further into the fringes of cities helps push population out further and lead to less overcrowding and pressures on limited space in core areas of cities This also takes pressure off increasing automobile use inside the centre of cities, reduces overall automobile use in urban areas, and frees up money for consumers to spend on products other than automobiles. This fits in with the plan to urbanize China, by taking pressure off property prices, reducing air pollution from automobile use, and improving quality of life. It is also seen as a way to stimulate economic activity in the fringe areas as subways extend further to outlying urban areas. An example is the $300 million three station line to Kunshan, an extension above ground to Shanghai's subway, which is expected to connect with a line to Suzhou. China's cities have spent about 22% of the total debt of $1.76 trillion in 2010 on transportation infrastructure, according to national audit. The subway and light rail effort is taking place in 26 cities with new or expanding lines, according to the Transportation Technology Development and Planning Research Center. Subways charge much less in China compared to New York- 2 yuan or 30 cents compared to $2.50 base fare in New York city, and will need local government and state subsidies. ...

Procter and Gamble's new CEO, Robert McDonald, set a new goal of over half a million customers a day for five years, hoping to add people in remote villages of China, India and other developing countries for its shampoos, toothpaste, diapers and other products. In many places people are not even familiar with the products like diapers, and need education about the benefits and use. McDonald sees the potential as just "absolutely amazing, amazing." And under the prior CEO, Lafley, progress was made in Mexico, and developing countries are now 32% of the $78 billion in sales, up from 23% four years ago in 2005. Sales are doubling every 4 years in these countries. In Mexico the marketing at low price points throughout Mexico has moved sales per capita to $20, which compares to $1 for India and $3 for China. The idea is to move China, India and places like Nigeria up to the Mexican level. McDonald sees sales growth of $40 billion with this move. Distribution is a challenge, and new ways to use these products and their design for low price markets and local customer habits is needed to make this a success. Families that don't use diapers are encouraged to start using them only once a day at night to promote restful sleep, and young girls are introduced to feminine hygiene pads. Shampoo is in tiny packets for 1-2 uses and may cost no more than an egg. Even though this puts P&G in head on competition with better established Colgate and Unilever, P&G executives see the efforts of all 3 companies actually helping to educate the people in using these products and broadening the market for all. ...

Over 9% of Countrywide's loans are past due by 30 days and the situation will continue to deteriorate through 2008 and 2009. For those loans that had weak credit checks like the Fast and Easy program the about 36% are 30days overdue on payments. During one conference call Countrywide showed a chart that indicated that loans with poor documentation were 50% more likely to go delinquent. And Federal investigators and the FBI are looking into Countrywide's Fast and Easy mortage program which turned a blind eye to inflated income figures did not bother to check pay stubs and employment information and in other ways left the program open to abuse. this may be at the heart of how the housing subprime morgage crisis got started in the last couple of years between 2003 and 2008. And the packaging of these Fast and easy mortgages as Fannie recently announced that it will no longer buy any mortgages that are in the Fast and Easy program. Its significant that in recent years about one third of all Countrywide prime mortgages eligible for sale to Fannie Mae were Fast and Easy. Its significant also that Fannie Mae did not require verification of employment on all loans and relied on Countrywide to verify the employment on a sampling of loans and still continued to buy these Fast and Easy program mortgages right down to the present day in April 2008. So Fannie Mae and others who purchased these mortgages and investors in these mortgage securities did not due the basic due diligence or ask the simplest of questions. Amazing and also the kind of thing that is at the heart of the crisis and about which a lot will be coming out as federal investigators get to the bottom of this mess. ...

And other colleagues says he thrived on demonizing the Sunnis and the regular crises under his leadership. The new prime minister Mr. Abadi is also from the same Shiite Dawa party that Maliki belonged to, and it is not clear how is leadership will turn out. The final push for Maliki's ouster came from Ayatollah Sistani of Iran. The U.S. and western allies also pushed for a new leader. The use of sectarian Shiite militias by Maliki to fight the Sunni insurgents from ISIS in 2014 further aggravated Iraq's religious divide.

Efforts to control out of control oil production by the Saudis and Russia as oil prices fall to $22. President Trump says he is considering tariffs in this situation to raise the oil price. He is also talking to president Putin and Prince Salman in an effort to moderate the decline in oil prices. The U.S. seeks to protect its oil industry which needs a higher price to operate profitably. One way for the U.S. to do this is to use its own oil to help the U.S. oil industry and not to take in any foreign oil. Another way is for president Trump to get the Saudis and Russia to make cuts in oil production and reach an agreement on supply of oil into world markets. During the early weeks of the coronavirus health crisis the impact on the world economy and demand was underestimated by both Russia and the Saudis. Russia depends on oil exports for one third of its budget and the Saudis have to cut 30% of their budget for ministries because of low oil prices, imposing hardships in both countries. ...

This report in the Guardian says U.S. Vice President Mike Pence supported the decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. Pence had hoped to use this to focus attention on the situation of evangelical Christians in the Holy Land. Instead it has backfired as Christian leaders are refusing to meet Pence in Jerusalem and Bethlehem. Pence is now seen as not welcome at the Nativity Church in Bethlehem, the major pilgrimage place for the Christian world. Jerusalem is such a sensitive issue that instead of gaining help for evangelicals in the U.S. who supported Mr. Trump, it may have damaged relations with Christian leaders who do not want to further aggravate tensions in the Holy Land.

Section 230 is a law passed in 1996 that makes the Social Media Companies and Media companies such as Meta and Google and others to have no liability for content posted on their sites. This has allowed these companies to grow and develop monopolies on the internet. Senator Whitehouse says-  "I understand Senator Graham was with respect to getting rid Of Section 230 Um, I strongly believe that Section 230 has long outlived its use, and it is now a real vessel for evil. That needs to come to an end. Um, the laws that Section 230 protects these big platforms from are very often laws that go back to the common law of England. that we inherited when this country was initially founded. I mean, these are long lasting, well tested. Important Legal constraints that have They've met the test of time, not by the year, by the decade, but by the century. In the overall scheme of things social media has weakened education in America as children of the Nation spend countless hours away from classroom education on their smartphones. Australia and other countries including China regulate the use of the smartphones and internet social media for children under the age of 14. This regulation strengthens education in these countries at the same time that the absence of limits weakens education competitiveness in America, and creates the idea that America's days of leadership in education have passed.The loss of this leadership means the loss of American leadership in the world in a decisive way. ...

Japanese prime minister Noda setup a council to look at three energy options, the first to phase out nuclear energy completely by 2030, the second to reduce dependence to 15%, and the third to keep nuclear dependence at current level of 20-25%. Renewable energy use goes up from 10 to 20% under all the options. At one point it appeared that the government would choose the second option. Now with growing public opposition the government is considering the first option seriously to phase out nuclear energy. After the passage of the legislation doubling the sales tax to 10% in three years, and increasing unpopularity, the government is looking for ways to accomodate public opinion. Noda will now meet with nuclear protesters. A recent poll in the Asahi Shimbun shows 43% favoring zero-nuclear policy, and 31% supporting the 15% option, only 11% support keeping nuclear energy at the 20-25% option.

South Korea's crowded hospital environment and Asian culture of being in continual close proximity for caretakers lets the MERS virus spread. The government's failure to alert hospitals of known cases means doctors are totally unaware of the MERS outbreak until many patients with MERS were transferred to larger hospitals in Seoul. The result inhaled droplets of MERS virus and rapid spread. The government feared there would be panic in the neighborhoods and acted too late. The known cases of MERS virus reached 95 cases, and 2500 people are being monitored. All this happened in a few days- The first infected patient was at an hopital in Asan, south of Seoul on May 12-14, 2015. He was sent to a larger hospital St Mary's in Pyeongtaek, near Seoul, with no one knowing he had been to Saudi Arabia and the UAE. From there he was transferred to Samsung Medical Center in Seoul, and he was diagnosed for MERS virus on May 20. By this time 37 people at MERS were infected, and one of them admitted to Samsung hospital in Seoul infected a large number of people there. President Park Geun-hye's Gallup Korea approval rating dropped six percentage points to 34%, and the government moved to make an "all-out response."...

Older people are seen as having lower cancer rates by comparison. Rates of gastrointestinal cancer for young people are increasing all over the world. India could use this opportunity to get its manufacturers in shape to compete with US products. It is making a huge effort to improve manufacturing, infrastructure and logistics base that will make it a completely different competitor by 2030. Having a stable government focused on grwoth and the economy, infrastructure, farmer's welfare, was a major step for India in 2024. 1. PETROBRAS KNOWHOW IN DEEP-WATER DRILLING HONED IN DEEPWATERS 100 MILES FROM RIO. In the 1970's Petrobras discovered oil in the coastal area near Maca. Later geological tests showed large deposits more than 100 miles offshore and more than a mile deep underwater. Senior Petrobras engineers worked with manufacturers to develop pressure resistant instruments and the hardware needed to drill deeper. This technology was developed over the years and Petrobras has now honed its skills in deepwater drilling. Since then Petrobras has become the leader in deepwater drilling.. The fact that Brazilian oil was offshore made Brazil focus on offshore oil exploration and use the Atlantic ocean near Brazil for one big R&D project. Petrobras uses floating platforms, of which many are converted oil tankers. These platforms are more agile in deep and remote waters and better weater waves and storms. Petrobras gets 90% of its oil from the waters over 100 miles north east of Rio de Janeiro from a cluster of 38 such platforms. The floating platforms are like large ships that can be connected to hoses to pumping points on the seabed. 2. PETROBRAS INVESTMENTS IN OVERSEAS OFFSHORE DEEPWATER OIL PRODUCTION. Petrobras has the size and profits to have global reach and make the large investments and bring deepwater expertise to other regions. It is 55.7% state owned. Production was 1.9 million barrels a day in 2006. Sales of $45 billion and profits of $10 billion for 2005. The 2005 profit was a 50% increase from 2004. Countries where Petrobras is working include Angola, Tanzania, Turkey and India. Petrobras has stated that it will increase overall investments by 66% in the next 4 years investing $87 billion, mostly on exploration and production from 2007 to 2011. Of that $12.1 billion will be invested overseas for new platforms off the Gulf of Mexico and new fields off the coast of Nigeria and Angola. Petrobras plans to invest $2 billion in the Gulf of Mexico for deepwater drilling. ...

Instructions in a 2012 law say the money from fines paid by banks for LIBOR related offenses should go to communities throughout Britain. A program in Harrowgate uses these funds to resurface tennis courts at a treatment center for injured police. British prime minister Cameron promised during the recent election to use 227 million pounds from fines paid against Deutsche Bank in April 2015 for financing 50,000 apprenticeships. Critics say the money should have gone to people who were harmed by the banks actions, yet in the case of LIBOR related offenses it is not clear who was harmed and by how much. The idea for the 2012 law come from Chancellor George Osborne. Osborne said about sending money back into local communities- "It is fitting that the money paid in fines by people who demonstrated the poorest values in our society is used to support those who demonstrate the very best."...
