Banks in Britain will be charged a 50% tax on 2009 bonuses of more than 25,000 pounds or $40,800. It will be imposed directly on the bonus pool at banks and will be paid by the bank. It takes place effective immediately and affects 2009 profits. The public in Britain is sympathetic to such a move and it comes in the midst of concerns about the British deficits similar in proportion to that of Greece, and of the Dubai debt crisis. Andrew Hilton, who runs CSFI, a research center focussed on financial issues put it aptly: "I think banking has become a truly parasitical business. Bankers these days borrow money at 30 basis points and lend it to te governmet at 300 basis points and then they go play golf."

Young South Africans, the so called born frees- born after the end of Apartheid and free elections in 1994- are diillusioned with the African National Congress of Nelson Mandela. They are disssatisfied with the lack of jobs, a poor education system, and tired of the corruption scandals under former president Jacob Zuma. A recent IPSOS poll shows only 55% of 18-24 year olds supporting the ANC compared to 61% overall. Some polls showed support dropping from born frees to below 50%. Almost half of the 58 million people of South Africa are born frees. Their view is expressed by one mother of three living in a shack in Alexandra Township in Johannesburg. She says we tried the ANC but are still living in squatter camps and dirty places. Only the ANC's reach into rural areas, its superior organization, and lack of viable alternatives, are likely to keep the ANC back in power. The Economic Freedom Fighters led by Mr. Malema, a former head of the ANC youth wing is likely to double its vote to 12% from the last election.  ...

One of the big changes is to give responsibility to younger managers. Chairman Whitacre's marching orders are to cut executive ranks and gve responsibility to a whole new group of younger managers. Performance reviews and goal setting is short-one page. The organizational chart for vehicle reviews that required 70 or so executives to pass on it is gone. Product decisions are made at weekly meetings with the President present. And people are not supposed to fear speaking up if a change is needed to what they are doing for a product. Debate is in and seniority is not supposed to be the factor it once was. 50 page presentations are out. Gallup in October showed Carter ahead Oct 13 by 4 points, and by Oct 27 by 8 points. A bill requiring that women make up 30% of nonexecutive supervisory board members of 100 companies by 2016 is likely to pass in the German parliament in Dec. 2014. Women make up 22% of the supervisory board of 30 companies on the DAX. The new bill requires that companies have to leave the positions unfilled if they cannot find women. France requires 20% of nonexecutive director positions go to women, which goes up to 40% in 2017. Women make up 29.7% of the boards of the 40 companies in France's CAC 40 index, which is up from 12.3% in 2011. The European Union has set a goal of 40% women on boards by 2020.

Protection from hospitalization for Omicron variants can drop to 57% from 81% after 6 months from second dose, and can be pushed back up to 90% using booster shots for Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, according to a large CDC study in the US. For Delta variant period last year the vaccine effectiveness against hospitalization was 90% from about two weeks after dose two till 6 months, dropping to 81% after 6 months, and up to 94% after a booster shot. For Omicron variant the currently vaccine effectiveness for same periods is 81%, 57%, and 90%.

Demand for political risk insurance in China increased from 25% in 2019 to 68% in 2023, according to insurance broker WTW. Out of 50 insurers only 5 are offering political insurance for China and only for $50 million when most companies needing this insurance are large companies. The Ukraine war and China-US tensions over Taiwan are making it difficult for American or European companies to do business in China.

Oil tanker hit off Dubai port carrying 2 million barrels of oil to China from Kuwait and Saudi on March 30 2026. This is the first big hit by a drone or missile of a ship carrying over 1 million barrels of oil. Crew of 24 was unhurt and the ship survived the hit by a drone with no oil leaking into the waters of the Persian Gulf. China gets 90% of its oil imports through the Straits of Hormuz. Which is why DJT says when this is about keeping shipping lanes open for oil transit it makes no sense that a Nation like the US that is self sufficient in oil and gas should have to take on the responsibilities of keeping  international shipping lanes open without any help from China- or Japan and South Korea. It is one reason for the US president's critical remarks on lack of such help, particularly from allies from the European continent.

When it comes to essential policy Republicans and Democrats in the US Congress can and will work together. A roughly $1 trillion infrastructure bill passed in the US Senate. Kentucky Republican Mitch McConnell says there are issues that are popular with both Democrats and Republicans.  He said in an interview with the WSJ - "The American people, divided, sent us a 50-50 Senate, and a narrowly divided House. I don't think the message of that was, 'Do absolutely nothing.' And if you are going to find an area of potential agreement, I can't think of a better one than infrastructure, which is desperately needed." The infrastructure bill passed this week 69-30 in the US Senate. McConnell thanked president Biden for getting the Democrats ready to compromise to pass the bill. Biden's long experience in the US Congress compares with another US president, when getting Congressional action from both parties was needed. Lyndon Johnson had this type of long experience in the US Congress which enabled him to reach compromise with Republicans to achieve goals in civil rights legislation and in passage of Social Security during the 1960's. In this sense Biden is right for the 2020's when national rebuilding is the task before America. ...

The Chief Correspondent of BBC News points out the dangers facing May and the British economy as the deadline of March approaches for invoking Article 50 to leave the EU and start negotiations. The possibilities of a "disorderly break" cannot be discounted, he says. There are many hurdles. The negotiations could get bogged down on the issue of settling outstanding obligations for which Britain owes 50-60 billion euros. Consumers will feel the effects of higher prices on their budgets as prices creep up. Already tech goods prices are reflecting the drop in value of the British pound. There is little solace to be found in the 6 months of steady economy following the Brexit vote as inflation has not hit consumers hard so far. Chancellor Merkel of Germany has said that there will be "no cherry picking" allowed in the negotiations. And the French right and former Gaullists have never concealed their views about Britain being on again and off again on the idea of Europe. The City of London, British business, and large parts of the Conservative Party do not favor Brexit, even the civil servants expected to implement it are skeptical, creating an additional layer of complexity and uncertainty and difficulty.Under a "disorderly break" Britain would revert back to the tariffs set under World Trade Organization arrangements. ...

After the ruble declines by about 30% in 2014, and a $30 billion failed intervention in October, the Bank of Russia decided to go to a free float of the ruble starting Nov. 10. 2014. Bank of Russia governor, Nabiullina stated it was "impossible to stand against fundamental factors" for a Russia so dependent on oil exports. The oil price dropped below $80 in Nov. 2014. Russia's gold and foreign currency reserves dropped to $421 billion in early Nov. less than enough to cover 6 months of imports. Nabiullina says the ruble has the potential to firm without "additional negative external factors."
