Krugman in the NYT cites president Trump's reference in an interview with the Economist magazine to the expression "priming the pump." Trump in that interview in May 2017 said he had come with the expression and feels good about it. "Priming the pump" is an expression used by president Franklin Roosevelt during the Depression period. During the depression and in 2009 the economic crisis needed a stimulus response and priming the pump. The economy today with lower unemployment is not the time to increase deficits with tax cuts for the wealthy, says Krugman. Only infrastructure spending with a long term return justifies increasing the deficit. He is critical of Speaker Ryan for supporting deep cuts into Medicaid for poor people, and yet supporting the tax cuts weighted more towards helping higher income people.

France's prime minister Edouard Philippe announces hard line measures after rioting in Paris in yellow vest protests.

Yellow vest protests will be banned in worst hit neighborhoods in Paris. The Paris police chief was replaced after violence, looting and arson in the Champs Elysees area of Paris. 10,000 gilets jaunes yellow vest protestors marched in Paris. Police have come under criticism for excessive use  of force. Hand held rubber bullet launchers and explosive sting grenades are some of the devi ces used  by police. The government says not enough force was used. Philippe said "inappropriate orders were given to reduce use of rubber bullet launchers. He says there should be a hardening of France's doctrine of law and order.

Suggests an impasse has been reached between the government and protestors.

NATO Summit in Madrid comes right after the G7 Summit. Just days before the NATO Summit in Madrid a number of important steps are taken. The NATO Response Force is increased from 40,000 which lacked deterrence to 300,000. Additional military spending of $100 billion announced will increase spending by the amount of the entire Russian defense budget. Turkish backing for Finland and Sweden to join NATO was negotiated bringing more capabilities and a long border with Russia in the Baltic into the picture. The G7 Summit will be seen as setting the framework of close cooperation and understanding of leaders of western and eastern democracies in the world including Africa, Latin America and Asia. Invited were leaders of South Africa, Argentina, India and Indonesia, major parts of the Free World in the 20th century and now into the 21st century. NATO Summit in Madrid adds to these leaders the leaders from Australia and South Korea. The idea here is to address the changing situation in Asia with China's aggressive posture in the Himalayas, the South China Sea, and with Taiwan, and the close cooperation with Russia during its invasion of Ukraine. ...

The same is true of many of the vegetables and fruits one sees inthe supermarkets.  When it comes to foodgrains there were hundreds of foodgrains in nature over long periods of history but big agriculture companies have limited foodgrains to corn, wheat, rice and a few species only. Nature does not operate in this way as it operates with tremendous genetic varieties of  fruits or vegetables, and many species for foodgrains, so that if one is subject to disease or damaged, another more resilient one takes its place. Most of the repository of documents held by the Sabarmati Ashram Trust are from Mohandas Gandhi's struggle for Swaraj in India, very little is from Britain such as documents in the British parliamentary and Foreign Office archives, and other British archives. This would help the Ashram Museum to give a more complete picture of what happened during the struggle for Swaraj or self-rule. That this request is being made only now is because of the neglect into which both Britain and India have left the state of trade, economic and cultural relations with India. The visit of Mr. Modi to the UK for the Glasgow summit and Mr. Johnson's visit to Gandhi Ashram on the Sabarmati river, comes from a realization that a lot needs to be done to catch up. This bridge in the Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir is at an height of 359 metres, the tallest bridge in the world. It is expected to open by January 2024. Vande Bharat will run across the bridge and Vande Metro trains between Jammu and Srinagar, cutting travel time between the two cities to 3.5 hours. About 28,000 tons of steel went into building the arch of the bridge. Himalayan tunnels need a horse shoe shape of curvature, an elliptical shape that prevents loose soil from causing landslides. India is only now building the kind of infrastructure the region needs as most of this region remains isolated compared to countries in Europe. This is true of Nepal and much of the Himalayan region. The level of infrastructure building is taking on a new pace and vigor as more roads, highways and bridges are being built in the Indian Himalayan states under the Modi administration. This will increase the economic activity in the region giving new life to agriculture and industry in the region, raising incomes and providing a better life for the people in these states. This report in WSJ says Mr. Musk's agreement with Twitter for the $44 billion merger had terrible timing. It comes with the future for social media companies becoming dimmer and the plunging shares in Tesla with the high inflation and the war in Ukraine hitting stocks.  It is striking that Musk around January 2022 before the invasion of Ukraine referred to Twitter as "the future of civilization," as reported by WSJ. This was typical of the hyperbole and talk typical of the last two decades that hyped up internet stocks. Musk said- "Having a public platform that is maximally trusted and broadly inclusive is extremely important for the future of civilization. I don't care about the economics at all." Twitter stock meanwhile has dropped to 20% below the price it came into public markets in 2013, now at about $35 a share. Mr. Musk agreed to buy Twitter at $54.20 a share about 50% more than it stands now. Twitter ad revenue outlook is dimming further as has happened at other social media companies and the company is now cutting jobs says the WSJ. ...

Coronavirus will add $2.5 billion to the cost of the Tokyo Olympics mostly for rebooking facilities, and paying additional wages for staff, as well as virus testing and cost for preventing spread of the virus. As is typical of these games going back to the disaster in spending at the Montreal Olympics that took the city years to recover, costs can double or more than double earlier estimates. Someone has to bear the extra costs and the national government will take on $1 billion of these extra costs.  The official budget estimate was $12.6 billion. An estimate from Japan Board of Audit in 2019 came up with figure of $20 billion. The pandemic would bring this closer to $22.5 billion or close to double. This cost to the Japanese taxpayer is leading one third of people to sour on the games saying they should be canceled in mid-Nov. TV Ashai poll, with one third saying delay it, only one third for it to go ahead. Except for $5.6 billion from a privately organized committee its all coming from the City of Tokyo with some help from the Japanese government. The Truss government UK budget in September 2022 does little for the most vulnerable populations in the cost of living crisis. It also fail to take any significant steps to build up energy supplies. Of all the governments in the G-7 countries France, Germany, Italy, Canada, it is the weakest when it comes to promoting social cohesion or taking action to promote both energy supplies and renewable energy for the transition during climate change. Spain has just introduced a wealth tax for the 1%. Nothing like this is seen here, instead the highest tax of 45% is scrapped at a time when the wealthiest are seen by most people in all the G-7 countries as the most able and even willing today after the pandemic to provide help to the vulnerable and weakest parts of the population. It is seen as delusional by some as it does not inspire much confidence in the financial markets and many in the Conservative party itself. It fails the test even Mr. Boris Johnson set himself of leveling up in Britain between the well off and the less well off in society which led to his election and the election of the Truss government with Johnsopn's support. ...

Charan Singh, who is given the Bharat Ratna to honor kisans and farmers of India comes from a generation of leaders in Uttar Pradesh, India's largest state, that includes Govind Vallabh Pant and Lal Bhadur Shastri from agrarian communties in the Ganges plains. This group of younger leaders joined the movement for independence under Gandhi and was elected in the Assembly elections of 1937, the first attempt at self rule in India under the British. He served in the first government of the state under Pant as chief minister. As finance minister in the government he conducted reforms to help farmers, for zamindari (large landholders in the British system) abolition and land ceiling. He became chief minister of the state and was popular with farmers, including Jats, Yadavs, Kurmis and Gujjars. With the socialist movement in the state led by Ram Manohar Lohia creating a new mood in the state in the 1960's posing a challenge to the Nehru government, the first government of parties including the socialists and the Jan Sangh the predecessor to the BJP of today, was formed in 1979 with Charan Singh as prime minister.  ...

The vote in the Senate was 67 to 27 to move forward with the $95 billion aid package to Ukraine and Israel. The bill has $60 billion in military aid to Ukraine, and about $8 billion in economic assistance. $14.1 billion to Israel and $10 billion for civilians in conflict zones. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell leads a determined group of 18 Republicans in the US Senate that support efforts by Majority Leader Schumer to get a bill for Ukraine Israel Aid passed in the next few days. This would also include economic aid for Ukraine and humanitarian aid in the Gaza conflict. Senator Dan Sullivan of Alaska says that deterrence is not divisible, American credibility is not divisible." This comes as former president Trump opposes the passage of such aid in Congress. This report says the former president says America's role should be only transactional, and to Russia the NYT reports he says he would encourage them to do whatever the hell they want. President Schulz of Germany met with president Biden at the White House this week. After passage in the Senate it faces a challenge in getting enough Republicans to support passage in the House. ...

Maroes Oldenburg of Netherlands stays calm in the final micro seconds taking a cue from the British rowers on the previous day as the Netherlands quad women rowing team win gold Paris Olympics 2024 by a fraction of a second- 0.18 seconds to be exact. Maroes Oldenburg is recovering from a bicycling accident while traveling in Austria breaking her back, when she had to have a 6 hour surgery and was told she may not make it. It took 1 month for her to walk. “For anyone who needs some inspiration, break your neck and you can win Olympic gold,” says Maroes.  Glover who came in second has three children. Liew laments the lack of investment in childcare for woman athletes with small children, 124 years after women were admitted into the Olympics. Paris Olympics has a small investment in childcare, a nursery for the first time. Liew is right in saying throwing flowers from a distance at athletes is the easy part, giving working parents the tools to do well and childcare comes down to choices that we make. ...

Akio Toyoda, CEO of Toyota may be out of step with the times. As other companies move forward in leaps in developing electric vehicles, Toyota moves slowly and deliberately. Now he is stepping back and Toyoda who is 66 years old is giving the CEO position to 53 year old engineer Koji Sato. When it comes to digitization, electrification and connectivity, Toyoda says that he belongs to an older generation and he wants the younger generation to decide what future mobility will look like.  Toyota under Akio Toyoda has concentrated on hybrids and plug in hybrids which make up about 30% of global sales. Toyota has fallen so far behind in Ev vehicles that it is not even in the top ten car companies making EV's in the US. Its belief was that from an emissions standpoint hybrids do just as well as EV vehicles. By 2035 only zero emission vehicles will be allowed in the EU. In California this includes plug in hybrids only by 2035. Toyota is now making a U turn after studying Tesla's approach and using a new platform dedicated to EV's and set a goal of 3.5 million EV vehicles by 2030.   ...

During the 2008 elections Obama did as well as Clinton by getting 43% of the white vote, it now appears headed into the 30's. This situation is reminiscent of the one facing Mondale in the 1980 election with Reagan, when Mondale received only 35% of the white vote. Fully 91% of the support for Romney comes from white voters as he passes 50% among overall voters in a late Oct. 2012 ABC/Washington Post poll. One irony in this situation is that Obama contested the 2008 election as a person who could bridge the racial divide.

Corporate customers now make up about 20% of RIM Blackberry customers, down from 71% in 2007 when the Apple iPhone was introduced. This means competing with Apple and Samsung in the consumer phone market. Business users bring more revenue per customer. A looming threat to RIM is the BYOD trend with companies allowing employees to bring their own phones and giving access to corporate data networks. Some companies are giving the new Blackberry 10 a try. Blackberry shares are up 41% in the last 3 months. Yet the challenge of keeping business customers and building a customer base in the consumer market against established competitors in 2013-2014 is a daunting one. Steps the Modi government in India is taking in the 2020 Budget to tackle slowing growth include relaxing the fiscal deficit target from 3% to 3.5% of GDO, selling public sector companies to generate more funds, so that additional investment can be done in infrastructure, rural development, education and health care. Growth of the economy is expected to drop to 5% for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2020.  A weak banking sector with sharp decline in credit, and decline in the auto sales by 20%, have worsened the decline in growth.  Ms. Nirmala Sitharaman, the Finance Minister, said that this budget is designed to "boost Indian incomes, and enhance their purchasing power." The Indian slowdown comes in the middle of a global slowdown, with China's growth expected to be 4.9% in the first quarter of 2020. As the virus toll mounts Japan's prime minister Abe announces a nationwide emergency on April 15. He delayed action to avoid effects on the economy of a lockdown. Japan is shifting to taking stronger action after seeing infections double every 8 days to reach 9000. Abe says person to person contact has to go down by 80%. The measures are not a lockdown as in the UK and are voluntary. Total deaths are 136 in Japan. A Kyodo News poll shows about 80% of the public thinks the moves comes too late. 

Schools are shut and companies have closed operations. Flights were restricted and visitors to Japan dropped 93% in March. These voluntary actions as well as a cultural advantage in people used to wearing face masks, is likely to help Japan through this health crisis. The emergency will cover a holiday period, and is through May 6. The government will give every household $1000 as a way to offset income lost.

German chancellor Angela Merkel comes out openly in support of the recommendations for a tougher lockdown made by Germany's National Academy of Science. This would require an end to school attendance Dece. 14, extended Christmas school break, full closure of all but essential businesses Dec. 24, and working from home to the fullest possible way. Merkel made a passionate speech in parliament ro mostly unmasked members. The opposition Alternative for Germany and the Free Democrats were critical of the government's handling of the pandemic which they called a failure with rising cases reaching a total of 1.2 million. The deaths are at 590 on a recent day, with total approaching 20,000. Alice Weidel of AfD described Merkel's handling as aimless and grotesque.  Christian Lindner of FDP said the lockdowns had proved to be ineffective. Carrie Lam's withdrawal announcement for the extradition bill that sparked the protests comes after 3 months of protests in which Lam could have started conversations and dialogue with protesters. This is now not likely to end the protests as a number of issues have emerged including social, political and economic issues and police action. For China it also raises questions of relations with major trading nations such as the U.S. With the stalled talks on trade and tariffs, and a slowing economy, the last thing China needs is for this to overshadow the bigger issues of economic growth and continued development of its economic potential. Coming earlier it could have some meaning, there is now a wider gap in the perceptions of both sides. The Congressional Budget Office analysis of the Republican House health Care bill shows 24 million Americans would lose health insurance over 10 years. In terms of budget savings the bill saves $337 billion over 10 years. The increase in uninsured comes from the roll back of expansion of Medicaid under the House plan, the reduction of tax credits, plus the removing of income based credits replacing it with tax credits based on age. President Trump is promoting the bill saying it will reduce the premiums that have gone up since Affordable Care Act was passed and increase competition. House Speaker Ryan in promoting his plan says he is not in "some coverage beauty contest." The House Plan says Ryan, does not mandate that all be covered, but simply says coverage is in a free market giving people the option to buy insurance that they want, so that the numbers of insured would not be as many as under a mandate.

This analysis of coal use using graphs shows a clear move away from coal in the world, except for two growth markets China and India which account for 60% of the increase in coal use since 2008. India has gone black in its shift to increasing use of coal. China has begun the shift away from coal to address the smog over large urban areas, poor air quality and health impact of coal use. Because China used five times the coal used by India in 2017, the overall impact in China and India is showing a shift away from coal to hydropower, other renewables including solar energy. It is likely that India will make the shift following China's example in the future. 

The trend is clear when one looks at the incremental terawatt hour and where it comes from. The shift is clear to renewables, hydropower, and non fossil uses in the rest of the World and China which account for most of the coal use in the world.

This is being used to support what may be the largest lockdown in history. Everyone is expected to remain at home. It is being widely used with high numbers of infections having the back of their hand stamped "Home Quarantined." After India announced a nationwide lockdown all wireless carriers were asked by the government to  insert a taped coronavirus health advisory that comes on after callers dial and before the call connects.Th recorded message talks about how to protect against the coronavirus.
