India has realized that without storage simply adding more renewable capacity will pose problems for grid managers. India will add 60 gigawatts of fresh coal powered base load capacity in addition to 21 gigawatts under construction to tackle the problem of intermittency. India now has 40% of installed energy capacity from non fossil sources, rising from 25% in 2013, with solar and wind making up 30%.

The difference between the 21% tax rate down form 35% put in place in 2017 and the proposed tax rate of 28% by Democrats is $1 trillion over 10 years. The corporate tax rate generates only 8% of government revenues and Lael Brainard thinks this is too low for investment that the government needs to make in climate change action, infrastructure, manufacturing, healthcare, childcare, education and other priorities neglected by different administrations over the last three decades, that are vital to rebuilding America.

European Union leaders including European Council president, Herman Van Rompuy, European Commission president, Jose Manuel Barroso, ECB president Mario Draghi, and Eurogroup finance ministers head, Jean-Claude Juncker, draw up a 10 year road map for "a genuine economic and monetary union." The prime ministers of Italy, France and Spain push jointly for deposit insurance to cover European bank deposits, Europe wide banking supervision, and bailout funds to directly purchase sovereign debt of Italy and Spain without conditions. This takes place June 22-27, 2012, with the EU leaders increasing pressure on Germany for the first time in concerted fashion. Nimsdal Purja leads a team of Nepalese climbers to the top of K2 the world's second largest mountain. Purja's equipment and supplies were blown away January 12 on the mountain. Yet the team put together a second effort  and successfully reached the top.

Purja first learned to climb at age 29. He is now at 38 years a climber with the unique achievement of climbing all the world's mountains 5 miles long. K2 was the toughest because unlike Mt. Everest it has no flat sections, a pyramid that goes straight up. Unlike Sherpa climbers Purja was born in the lowlands of Nepal, born in a Gurkha family and settled in Hampshire, England.

For Nepal this is a singular achievement as Tenzing aspired to climb K2 after making it to the top of Everest in 1953 with Edmund Hillary.

Homeowners in California average ownership 17 years instead of 12 for US- reason is that property tax increases in California were limited to 2% a year under Prop. 13 of 1978, so older owners stay put. The result is fewer home on the market as older home owners avoid paying the higher property taxes for new homes that could be 10X what they pay under the old rules. This drives home prices up. Median home price is $900,000 in California.

Cannabis use- age  matters, concentration matters, and it affects mortality in the way even alcohol does with frequency of use and concentration of the substance, says this report in The Wash. Under UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, natural islands or rocks are given territorial sovereignty going out 12 nautical miles, but no such sovereignty exists for reefs that are submerged in high tide. Two U.S. B-52's fly within 2 nautical miles of the Cuarteron Reef in the Spratly Islands in late Dec. 2015, about 600 miles south of Hainan Island in the South China Sea. China claims control over the South China sea navigation routes through its reclamation work in the seven rocks and reefs in the Spratly Islands. The U.S., Japan, India, Vietnam, Philippines and other countries say these are international waters and form key navigation routes from the Indian Ocean to the Pacific Ocean for global shipping. In late October 2015, a U.S. Navy destroyer sailed within 12 nautical miles of another island built by China in the Spratly Islands.
