On one hand Chinese environmental officials are aware of the pollution problems in Beijing and Shanghai and other cities. Levels of nitrogen dioxide in Beijing exceed the WHO clean air guidelines by 78%. On the other hand the newly emerging middle class is seeking car ownership, and the local government officials need growth in the car industry to show good GNP and GDP growth numbers on which their performance is judged. Beijing and Shanghai and Anhui province local governments are part owners of some auto companies. About 416,000 people are employed in the Shanghai area auto industry alone and the auto industry in Shanghai pays about 900 millon dollars in taxes, according to government figures. At seven cars per 1000 population car sales are just beginning to take off. And with China's population its clearly not going to be possible to have the same level of ownership as in the US. The same is true for India. This would increase by many times the current demand for crude oil and increase emissions to the point of creating a disaster. And even today because of lax enforcement, and older models on the road, about 40% of vehicles in Beijing have no pollution controls and the other 60% have varying degrees of pollution controls. Experts say changes to the subsidized oil price policy, refineries that produce cleaner gasoline, policies to build more mass transit which has lagged behind in China as car sales took off (and probably more GNP impact from car plants than mass transit which act as inducement for local officials), and stricter fuel efficiency and auto emissions standards are needed....

The Guangzhou to Wuhan train high speed line covers the 664 mile trip in 3 hours. 42 such high speed rail lines are set to open by 2012. These trains run at 215 miles per hour. Original plans were to build these lines by 2020 but the global economic crisis led to state planners moving the date up to 2012 and allocating $100 billion for this purpose. Moving passenger traffic to high speed rail lines also frees up the existing lines for more freight. Plans are to build an additional 3000 miles of track for passenger and fast freight trains at 155 miles per hour. Practically every seat on the Guangzhou- Wuhan 14 car train was full on a typical day last week, filled with migrant workers going home. What makes building these lines affordable is construction workers who earn less than $100 a month, a national savings rate of 40%, and rising tax revenues.This particular line cost $17 billion to build because of the many tunnels needed for the line. The three hour train actually makes the journey faster than the 2 hour flight to Wuhan from Guangzhou because of faster check-in times. Train stations are built in industrial districts away from the city, in the case of Guangzhou, a 40 minute bus ride from the city....

Yet speeding up and creating alternative ways to cut asylum cases may not be enough to address the problem which at its root goes to the fact that the British system of justice was not designed to handle people of other countries freely entering the country on boats. Already the Times of London repoirts that there are 111,000 asylum cases up from 7000 in 2022 by June 2025.  A clear warning that Labour's entire program of action on housing, on immigration, on the economy and cost of living, can be derailed by not recognizing the fact that illegal migrants are simply making a travesty of the British system of justice which was not designed for people of other countries freely entering the country. The simple question is can thousands of illegal migrants be placed ahead of the interests of 60 million people of England, Wales and Scotland.  ...

To pay for this and keep the deficits down the dollar strong, one other action was taken- to increase investment in the economy and in manufacturing by allowing expensing of investment 100%. France ranks first in the 34 nation OECD for 100% preschool attendance, with the U.S. way below at 46%. The U.S. is the only country in the developed world that has no federal paid parental leave policy. This puts enormous stress on mothers, and also on fathers who share the tasks of parenting. This is one reason why there is a long tradition of working mothers in France, and why American mothers are constantly having to make choices of staying at home and parenting or trying to juggle work and careers.

With gasoline prices at $4.66 a gallon, $1.45 higher than the national average California governor Newsom is accepting a change to slow the transition to alternative fuels. Many refineries in California are planning to close. Relations between Chevron and the state government are improving but there is a long way to go to make a smoother transition to giving price relief to the public with the declining production in the state over two decades. In 1990 California oil production was at about 900,000 barrels a days by 2000 this had dropped to 700,000. By 2025 about 300,000 barrels a day.

The shoes were heavy, Bannister was on war time rations growing up, he worked during the day, there were mental barrriers says his friend Coe. And on the day Bannister ran it was raining and wind gusts of 25mph made it not certain he would make the run.Bannister puts it this way- "Sport is aobut adapting to the unexpected and being able to modify plans at the last minute. Sport, like all life, is aobut taking your chances." And after it was filmed by the BBC, Bannister was known all over the world, yet as an amateur he did not benefit from it financially, as runners do today. His friend Coe talks to The Guardian about this achievement and the story behind it.
