Brandon Johnson not just won the mayoral election in Chicago but also showed that putting the community effort forward to continue fighting crime, distancing oneself from extreme positions such as unfunding police, and energizing the community through a grassroots campaign works. When people can see and feel the candidate and that he cares for them, is grappling with the problems, it is possible to come from behind, for an unknown candidate like Johnson to win. Mr. Johnson, a public school union leader won over a well known Democrat Mr. Vallas who fought the election on tougher action to fight crime, winning 51% to 49%. Mr. Johnson carried wards with black majority population by over 80%. Johnson pitched voters on a public safety plan that went beyond policing while supporting police yet getting the community involved. Johnson also did well in white neighborhoods along the lake and in the northwest Hispanic neighborhoods of Chicago. Bernie Sanders was out campaigning with Johnson in the final days of the campaign. And Representative Jesse Garcia also supported Johnson in the Hispanic neighborhoods. Mr. Quezada, a Cook County Commissioner for the northwest side says people just felt- "we want to be invested in, we don't want to just be punished."  ...

Ruth Igielnik of the NYT says judicial elections in Wisconsin have always been non partisan. The politicization is recent since 2011. In 1990 there was little correlation between court picks and partisan races, today the correlation is almost exactly, as she shows on a graph. State Supreme Court election results in Wisconsin and US presidential election results have become increasingly correlated from 0.3 in 1990 to 0.95 in 2023.

BBC News looks at the Judge who will be handling the Trump New York indictment, Juan Merchan. He began his legal career in 1994 after graduating from Hofstra University School of Law. He worked in the Nassau County District Attorney's Office before becoming deputy assistant attorney general for Nassau County in 1999, and assistant attorney general for Nassau and Suffolk counties. He has served as a justice in the New York County Supreme Court since 2009. Merchan is described as a serious jurist, smart and even tempered, and a no-nonsense judge who is always in control of his courtroom.

Merchan has already handled a case against the Trump Organization and Mr. Weisselberg. In that courtroom he is reported to have said that he would not in any way allow anyone to bring up a selective prosecution claim, or claim that this is some sort of novel prosecution, that Weisselberg was somehow being targeted because of his association with Mr. Trump.

Former federal prosecutors say proving a second crime exists that converts a misdeameanor into a felony under New York law is important for the prosecution's case in the indictment of Mr. Trump. This they say depends on whether the hush money payments made to a porn actress were personal or political for the campaign to protect the candidate. The specifics of the case and obvious intent matters a lot in the case, say experts. NYT says the groping issue that came up in the Trump campaign's early days- and which could have tanked the Trump campaign- was at about the time that this story may have come out if it was not stopped with hush money payments.

The next steps after the arraignment of Donald Trump in New York are the information exchange of the prosecution with the defense team with a first tranche of documents and then a second tranche of documents. This happens by mid June and gives the defense team time to size up the situation. Next are motions for specific relief. The defense may ask to transfer the case to Staten Island or ask the case to be pushed back to the Spring of 2024. At this time the next date for the appearance of Mr. Trump is December 4. Janet Protasiewicz, a Democrat, wins 55% to 45% for Republican Daniel Kelly in the Wisconsin Supreme Court election. This gives Democrats a one vote majority in the Supreme Court. It will mean a challenge of a 1849 abortion law and the redrawing of the electoral maps that gives Republicans  a majority in the state assembly. The governor is Democrat Tony Evers and the legislature in Wisconsin has a Republican majority.  States in the midwest such as Michigan and Wisconsin played a part in Mr. Trump's gain of the presidency. Since then Ohio has moved into the Republican side, and the close contests are in places like Arizona, Pennsylvania and Georgia. Colorado moved to the Democratic side. Just 40,000 votes in Arizona, Georgia and Wisconsin separated Biden from Trump in the election of 2020 even though Biden had 7 million more votes than Biden because of the Electoral College system which goes by state's won. In 2016 Trump and Biden were separated by just 80,000 votes.   ...
