EU leaders are skeptical that lower taxes are the right policy to reduce the deficit. This adds to the political uncertainty as the new government would have to implement the measures agreed to between the current Greek government and the EU leaders. A similiar situation existed in Portugal but the recent elections there, participation of the opposition party in talks, and the newly elected government conducting its own negotiations, has removed that element of uncertainty which exists in Greece. ...

Mick Clegg worked with Christiano Ronaldo as his athletic trainer during his first spell with Manchester United. At the time Ronaldo was 18-24 years. During that time Ronaldo did not lift heavy weights, instead he used light weights and gradually stepped up the intensity with repetitions or changing the weight lifted.  Ronaldo is on a Mediteranean diet with particular attention to protein for the training he does. A 40 minute nap in the afternoon after eating helps one to recover from the hard work of the morning, says Clegg. Christiano's mental attitude stands out in Clegg's experience working with him- his determination. He set a goal of working harder than Welshman Ryan Giggs, and was keen on taking the advice of experts and incorporating it into his routine. It is this that makes Ronaldo the player that he is. There is also a sense of calm about Ronaldo in a game where he remains composed till an opportunity comes late in the game as in the game with Villareal. At 36 in his second time with Manchester United Ronaldo is far stronger mentally than when he left Manchester United in 2009, says Clegg. ...

How the Philippines is tackling some of its problems especially the tax increases and sales taxes to increase the government',s tax collection rate which was a major problem there. 70% of the budget was going to pay interest in 2005, with little left to build roads, power supply and infrastructure. Endemic corruption among tax officials and loopholes in the tax code made things much worse in Philippines, than India and Indonesia. Ms Arroyo pushed through measures to increase taxes and to bring foreign investment into the country. Remittances of $14 billion a year from the 10 million Filipinos in the US, and Europe and the Middle East have also helped, and these remittances have increased with business confidence rising in the country's future.

Krauthammer says there is reason for optimism that the super committee of the August 2 Debt Ceiling and Deficit bill can achieve major results. The reason he says is that much of the work in key areas has already been worked out by the Simpson-Bowles Commission. This has also received extensive public scrutiny and discussion. Its now upto the committe to make some choices for tax reform. For the sake of efficiency and fairness this needs to be done. Efficiency is gained by closing the loopholes and the tax exemptions for mortgage interest deductions, health-care exclusion, and subsidies such as the one for ethanol. And in its place moving to lower tax rates, the 23% envisaged by Simpson-Bowles, or the 28% from the Reagan days, down from the 35% today. Fairness is gained by removing tax breaks for special interest groups that do much of the lobbying. The mortgage interest deduction can be phased out starting at $500,000 in the inital phase or using the plan for tax expenditures proposed by Martin Feldstein. Feldstein's proposal outlined in the New York Times on May 4, 2011, (see group for Feldstein) was to limit the reduction in taxes from deductions and exclusions to 2% of the person's AGI or adjusted gross income. The other part of the Committee's focus would be the structural changes to Social Security and Medicare- raising the Social Security and Medicare ages and changing the inflation formula, and means testing Social Security. Obama has already considered the raising of the age for Social Security and changing the cost of living formula....

An Ottawa native, Andrew Scheer, 38 years old, representing the state of Saskatchewan, is elected leader of the Conservatives in Canada by winning about 51% of the vote from 141,000 party members votes.  He is a former Speaker of the House of Commons. Scheer put less emphasis on social issues such as same sex marraige and abortion, basing his campaign on the idea of being less negative and strident than Mr Harper, the previous leader who lost the 2015 election to the liberals under Trudeau. Scheer opposes carbon taxes, and emphasized putting potential immigrants through testing for "Canadian values."

Economists using data from Greek banks estimate the tax evasion in 2009 through unreported income at 28 billion euros. Using a tax rate of 40% 11.2 billion euros of taxes were evaded by Greek taxpayers. This is one third of the Greek deficit in 2009. The economists say doctors and engineers were prominent in the tax evasion list and find that these groups have large representation in Greece's parliament. Italy has taken steps under the Monti government to crackdown on tax evasion, but Greece is still to take action in this area, which is particularly glaring considering that the previous Greek government agreed to cut the minimum wage in Greece.

Some thoughts on taking away from the private sector its resources and ability to create or preserve jobs as a matter of concern, as the public sector or government can only create temporary work jobs which are needed but not to the extent where the private sector resources are diverted and it gets compromised. The other matter of concern is spending that does not take into account the impact of higher and higher taxes on the economy. These concerns and the importance to strike the right balance so that new jobs can be created in useful infrastructure and energy spending and at the same time preserving the vitality of the private sector. And not overburden the system with higher taxes by government spending that is not carefully targeted to get best results and wisely done.

Chancellor Merkel tells the German media "it is better to talk with each other than about each other." Trump called Merkel's refugee policy "catastrophic," Merkel has said that the Geneva convention requires countries to do this on humanitarian grounds. On trade German's Economy minister Brigitte Zypries says Germany would file a suit on any hike in import duties at the World Trade Organization, that WTO rules restrict import taxes to 2.5% on autos. Germany's BMW plant in the U.S. exports more autos than GM and Ford put together, and Merkel is likely to emphasize large German investment in the U.S.. The heads of BMW and Siemens and other industry executives are accompanying Merkel to the U.S. as trade will be a key topic.

Francois Fillon wins 44% of the vote to Alain Juppe at 28.6%.  Mr Sakozy suffers defeat in the election primary after 3 presidential debates in which Fillon's "statesmanlike" image came across better than the flamboyant style of Sarkozy. Another factor is that Juppe is seen as too close to former president Chirac and suffered from his effort to make changes and job cuts as prime minister under Chirac. Fillon is less well known which turned out to be an advantage. Fillon has the support of traditionalist Catholic groups. Fillon's platform is for 500,000 job cuts to reduce the large size of France's public sector, remove the wealth tax imposed by Hollande, reduce taxes, increase work week to 48 hours maximum and scrap 35 hour work week, gradually raise retirement age to 65, increase business incentives to improve economic growth. Fillon lives in Le Mans western France.

What happens when a town grows so fast that it cannot cope- with overcrowded schools, 20 mile commutes that take 90 minutes, and a water system that fails frequently.  It started with South Carolina, a Sunbelt state cutting property taxes to about half to attract more people from neighboring states. Lake Wylie, South Carolina in America's sunbelt attracted so many newcomers, about 80% of its population, that it cannot handle the too rapid growth.

The school system placed a $15,000 impact fee to build new schools that is set on each new house constructed. The city council of the town placed a 16 month moratorium on commercial and residential rezoning requests, new apartment complexes and subdivisions. Similar bans on growth are increasing in South Carolina and booming towns in America's sunbelt as the consequences of unplanned haphazard growth with tax incentives are becoming burdensome.

Prices of gasoline for automobiles is in the range of 8 dollars a gallon. In France its about 1.40 euros a liter or about $8.20 a gallon. In Spain gasoline costs 1 to 1.25 euros a liter. The cost of a liter of gasoline is up 17% in the UK, 15% in Austria and 8% in France and 7% in Russia, compared to 12 months prior. So are Europeans used to paying higher taxes on gasoline and higher prices for gasoline complaining. Forthe first time gasoline prices are becoming a serious issue in Europe. And there have been strikes across Europe by truckers, fishermen, port workers, farmers and others asking for tax rebates or tax reduction. While Sarkozy in France called for the EU to cap fuel taxes, Gordon Brown of the UK is not in favor of this idea. Many European countries depend on gasoline taxes to support their budgets. European Commission's position is that artificially lowering prices would not help energy conservation and efficient use and is supported by consumer groups. The European Commission said last week that short term relief should be focussed on the poorest families. On the other side the German Federation of Consumer organizations is lobbying the government to spend 5 billion euros in public transportation and 10 billion euros in subsidies to households that install energy saving devices. ...

Paul Krugman says in this column in the NYT that Biden's policies for trade reflect a stronger conviction for protecting American technologies and building its manufacturing base than previous administrations including the Trump administration. With less rhetoric and with quiet determination Biden has placed American domestic manufacturing as a requirement for renewable subsidies for new electric vehicles manufacturing and sale in the Inflation Reduction Act. In the Chips and Science Act Biden has placed US semiconductor technology promotion and manufacturing at the core of the Act. Krugman says this was the right thing for Biden to do. The renewable subsidy comes from ordinary Americans paying taxes who would benefit most from new jobs created in the electric vehicle industry. China has gained such a big lead in semiconductor chips manufacturing and materials by supporting its industry, that it is the right thing to do to give American manufacturers the same kind of support. Trade rules were about creating a level playing field, yet previous administrations failed to create that level playing field, and the Biden administration has boldly made its point clear. ...

The average price of a smartphone in India in 2022 was $206 excluding taxes, Apple's smartphones go for $898. With discounts Apple is now bringing the price down to below $500. In 2019 phones over $500 made up 3% of the market. This has increased to 6% in 2022. Apple is counting on this share of the market going up and prices being brought down below $500 to build a larger share of the market. Its market in 2023 is about 5% in India compared to 22% in China.

In China Apple has its own stores. It is only now opening its first store in Mumbai. This and building manufacturing facilities in India could be the way to increase its share of the market in India to where it provides an alternative comparable to the Chinese market. This is the first time after the pandemic and the supply chain issues, the idea of friendshoring, that Apple is reorienting its policy for making India a key part of its supply chain and market.

Trump 2017 tax cuts have been studied in detail at Princeton, U of Chicago, Harvard, and Treasury Department. The effects are that it is adding $100 billion each year to the national debt of $34 trillion. And gains to individual workers are only about $750 a year not the $4000 promised per worker. The corporate tax rate was reduced from top rate of 35% to 21%, and investment spending was given accelerated deduction for income taxes. The studies show investment growth in years after 2017 was the same as the years before. To test if the rate of investment was slowing and the law pushed it up studies show this not to be the case. It was also shown that accelerated deduction of investment was more effective in increasing investment for individual companies based on 12000 corporate returns studied. ...

Prime minister Theresa May of Britain announces her plan to spend an additional 20 billion pounds a year on the National Health Service. Over five years the commitment is for an additional 70 billion pounds. By 2023 this will bring the UK to the point where it is spending the same proportion on health care as France. This also fulfills a promise made by the pro Brexit campaign. May says some of this would come from higher taxes, and 9 billion pounds that the UK contributes to the European Union each year would go to pay for the additional funds to the NHS. The 2017 British election with Labor winning 40% of the vote has affirmed the shift in public sentiment to greater commitment of funds for health and education. Poorer communities in Britain that were left behind tended to vote for Brexit, with a large gap widening between London and the rest of the country.
