Supporters of prime minister Netanyahu's judicial overhaul in Israel say there is an overreach by the Supreme Court and it has struck down laws passed in parliament. Opponents of the judicial overhaul say the changes would give the government control of a nine member committee that appoints Supreme Court judges. A simple majority of 61 would make it possible to override decisions of the Supreme Court. At the heart of this struggle is the vision of a secular and pluralist state from the time of its founding by Europeans opposed to a religious and nationalist Israel represented by Netanyahu.

The protests may have begun a new trend that in which parts of the religious right see that things have gone too far too fast for such changes. And the need for new ideas to get a better life for all Israelis without the constant elections and legal battles, the focus on cultural differences of the Netanyahu period.

One way US president Biden hopes to pay for replacing America's crumbling infrastructure is by bringing back the principle of fair sharing of the tax burden to 45 of America's largest companies. Companies like Amazon, Apple and Google would now pay the minimum corporate tax rate of 15%. The idea of a global minimum tax rate is put forward by US central bank chief Janet Yellen and the US Treasury Department, and also by president Biden. Over four decades China moved from a nation of bicycles to some of the newest infrastructure in the world just as the US and Europe's infrastructure decayed and was not renovated. There is a sense of awareness today that this decay of  infrastructure should not have been allowed to happen, that it is essential for the welfare of the countries and the people of America and Europe.

British prime minister Boris Johnson announces tough new measures that make it illegal to socialize in gatherings of more than six. This is an effort to fight a second wave of coronavirus in Britain. The government now believes that normal life will not return till spring and that "moonshot" mass testing will be needed to contain the virus. The new "rule of six" goes into effect in Britain on September 14, and anyone "breaking the rule risks being dispersed, fined and possibly arrested." Covid marshals will patrol city centres to split up large groups.

Schools workplaces and restaurants will be able to hold more than six people in total but they will have to be groups kept separate. The prime minister said it was needed to stop Britain from the exponential growth happening in France. He said "a stitch in time saves nine."

Clearly New Yorkers can as a community do better. As Paris gets ready for the Olympics the efforts of City Hall and the French local and federal governments can be something for New York to learn from. Clearly as home to Wall Street New Yorkers should get their priorities straight and invest in the subway system taking a page from Tokyo and other cities that are doing infinitely better in their subway systems with modernization and attractive subway facilities. Surely this takes investment in people and facilities on a scale with tens of billions of dollars in investment which can be diverted from wasteful spending in many startups, and tax dollars going into what comes first for New Yorkers using the subway system every day. Today New Yorkers are like the people of Mumbai who until the efforts of the Modi government to invest in the complete modernization of subway and trains had given up hope so entrenched were old systems and old ideas.

Take away the iPhone and the same thing goes on in the computer, then on smart TV, finally the parent has to return the laptop because lessons are done online.

Southwest pioneered lower cost domestic travel under founder CEO Kelleher. It did not charge fees for checking in bags and seats were not assigned. This model is now being questioned as baggage fees are generating $1.3 billion at American, $1.2 billion at United and $1 billion at Delta Airlines. Even a smaller airline like Spirit generates $1 billion from baggage fees. Additional sources of income are passengers charged for seat selection. Southwest generates about $70 million from baggage fees and does not charge for seat selection. Southwest sees not charging for baggage as part of its culture and current management is not changing the status quo.

Other problems are that Boeing can deliver only a fourth of the plane Southwest ordered. As a result the airline is facing a crisis and Eliott Investment Management now owning 11% of the company is pushing for change including ouster of the CEO and the Board.

Victoria Pendleton, British Olympic medalist in cycling, describes what it was like to be a girl cyclist in the last 2 decades in a male dominated macho culture that had little room for girls cyclists with a broader mind and interests. A lot changed since then and Pendleton had to put up with a lot of the bad in British male cycling culture that got questioned in the last 10 years. Pendleton had moments of deep depression as a result but recovered with help from her family. Here she recounts the events of these years. She feels finally liberated even in simple acts such as eating vegetarian and trying other sports, so stifling was male cycling culture of that time. She felt liberated talking to the coach and girls cyclists practicing for the Paris Olympics and expressed amazement and relief that a lot is different now from the bad days of old.

Ski resorts in the northern French Alps in the Savoie region and the southern French Alps near Grenoble are easy to access with flights from the US and cost a fraction of what the ski resorts cost in the US in places like Colorado. About 4000 mountain ski resorts are owned by families or a municipality and have kept costs low. By contrast corporate consolidation has led to much higher prices in Colorado and other mountain ski locations in the US. 

During the summer and fall seasons these locations are attractive for hikers and cyclists and cost much less.

Krugman says crypto currency has become a huge, really huge player in campaign finance. He says it accounts for almost half of corporate spending on political action committees PAC's in 2024 election year in the US. He calls it startling that this is happening even though crypto currency destroys value. Ustar Biotechnologies is a Chinese startup, that says it has the technology, costs that the founder says "no one can compete with," and affordable prices for poor countries. The sales of such diagnostic test portable devices or kits is expected to soar in coming years. Quimin You, the inventor and founder of Ustar, graduated in North America and worked with multinationals. His proposals for cheap diagnostic technologies were turned down by multinationals, who in their narrow focus saw these thechnologies undermining their existing products. Now Qimin is back in China with a startup that will do this.

Hysteresis is the term used for entrenched stubborn unemployment especially as workers stay on the job market for so long that they become dispirited and permanently unemployed. Britain's New Deal policies introduced by the Labor party do not work well in such situations because forcing people to find jobs has to be accompanied by jobs being available. The most successful so far are job subsidizing programs like Germany's Kurzarbeit. Kurzabeit encourages companies to adopt shorter working hours and reduce job losses and layoffs, because 60% of the lost income is paid to workers by the government. Since September 2008 the numbers taking advantage of this scheme went up from 80,000 to 1.4 million in June 2009. At present the OECD counts 22 governments that support a shorter working week to reduce job losses.

Kristof of the NYT says the narrative about Hillary Clinton being dishonest is clearly overdone and inaccurate. He says the gaffes about the use of personal email server have unfairly created a distorted narrative. On changing positions on trade and minimum wage- this happens frequently with all the candidates. Some are glib enough for not being noticed, Clinton not a natural politician drawing attention. On Libya, and on Syria, Clinton is blamed for the President's errors and not given credit for pushback in league with Panetta, Gen. Kean and Gen. Jones, that has influenced changes made in 2016, and the president accepting blame for errors. In this instance Clinton has been far from shifty by publicly allying herself with Leon Panetta's position in "Worthy Fights," and Gen. Jones's remarks. Far from having erred on Libya and Syria policy, Hillary Clinton, like Chuck Hagel and others in the administration including Joe Biden, showed exceptional patience in dealing with the president, national security advisor, and McDonough in policy matters- when they were right but the country was weary of what were seen as futile global engagements in remote areas setting too high a bar for any action. Clinton rightly described this as a pendulum swinging too far in the opposite direction after the Bush/Cheney years. On young women and being "progressive" Hillary Clinton is from a older generation that experienced the kind of discrimination that young women fail to grasp, according to a recent analysis of University of Massachusetts polling survey results cited in the Washingon Post. A PolitiFact Pulitzer winning fact checking site shows 50% of the Clinton statments are either true or mostly true, compared to 49% for Bernie Sanders, 9 percent for Trump, 22% for Ted Cruz, and 52% for John Kasich. ...

Douthat offers insights into U.S. president Obama's thinking when he said at a National Prayer Breakfast, that Christians also had committed bad acts in the name of religion and reminded listener of the Jim Crow days when blacks were oppressed by church going Christians. Following the joining of NAFTA free trade zone the Mexican diet and food ecosystem began to more closely resemble the food diet system in the U.S. bringing with it severe health consequences. Soda and coke are now more entrenched in Mexico, as are fast food outlets. In 1980 only 7% of Mexicans were obese, compared to 20% in 2016, according to Institute for Health Metrics at the University of Washington. And diabetes kills 80,000 people a year, becoming the top killer according to the World Health Organization. A trade expert at Tufts University, Timothy Wise, says Mexico took on the worst aspects of a first world country like the U.S., with few protections. A similar problem is taking place in India and China as obesity grows, according to the T.H. Chan School of Public Health at Harvard, as low nutrient highly processed foods of large food companies with huge advertising budgets take a prominent place in diets. This would strangle Italy's and other economies such as Spain and Portugal. It is not in Germany's interest, it is best to make partners. Only Austria, Netherlands, Sweden and Denmark oppose this. Yet this is shortsighted. Most of these northern tier countries have pursued their own self oriented interests not that of a European community of nations in crisis. ...
