Seniors helping seniors is the subject of this report by Clare Ansberry in the WSJ. This is a growing trend. Worker shortages increased in the home care industry during the pandemic. Now older workers such as Diane Richards, 81 years, a registered nurse, are filling some of these positions. Ms. Richards worked as a nurse for 59 years and after her husband's death decided to join Right at Home in Bend, Oregon. Some are retirees like Linda McCallum, 79 years, who are taking positions to supplement Social Security income at $20 per hour. Right at Home depends on her, as it lost half its workers during the pandemic. Over 20 years the broader workforce grew by 13%, yet the workers over 65 years working or seeking work increased by as much as 144% or 6.4 million in the US, according to the Labor Department. WSJ shows pictures of these older workers who are dependable and can relate to mobility issues, care of loved ones, need to take health medications in ways that younger workers cannot. ...

Hear this America- Trumps call to end tax on social security benefits is a HUGE MISTAKE. It will result in seniors getting an average of about $560 now in exchange for a cut in social security by 25% in 2033 only 9 years from now, and Medicare insolvency 6 years from now. The insolvency dates and cuts are estimates of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget.

Senator Larson says Trump's plan to end tax on social security benefits is "a fatal mistake," because it does not make up for the lost revenue. The Committee for Responsible Federal Budget, bipartisan budget evaluation says it will bring forward by 6 years Medicare insolvency from 2037 to 2031 just 6 years from now, and advance Social Security Fund insolvency by 1 year from 2034 to 2033. It will lead to a cut in Social Security benefits of 25% in 2033 which would have dangerous and tragic consequences for seniors in America pushing many into poverty.

What can be guessed easily the less forunate or poorer sections of society are way more likely to be charged high interest rates or exorbitant interest rates by credit card companies is confiremed by a research report. Demos, a nonpartisan public policy research and advocacy group, says in areport, that low-uincome and lower-middle class income cardholders were about five times more likely than the wealthiest cardholders to pay more than 20% interest. It breaks down users into 4 categories, with the last two being late payers and people with revolving balances. If this graphed out the picture would show practically the entire profit of the credit card companies coming from these two. The reason being that the other two categories are those who have cards and don't use them so don't get billed, and those who pay before the due date so they pay no charges except what the credit card companies make from the business from whom the purchase is made. This means says Singletary of the WPost that the better off well to do sections of society are actually having their annual fees subsidized by the poorer sections of society, or the lower middle class. Singletary says to a online discussion person who though his cards without annual fees were free, they were never really free, and few people think of this. As a society its like hitting oneself in the foot, because by impacting students, minorities, the lower middle class and other sections of society- which form amajority of the people in the country- at a time when they are deeply in debt, is to make for another hurdle to economic recovery. Its going to impact consumption, foreclosures and worsen the cycle that creates more unemployment. ...

As many politicians and commentators deride programs by the government in the infrastructure area as " mere spending programs", Robert Frank, an economist at Cornell and NYU offers some much needed clarfication. High savings rates are not bad for the public, savings go into investment int he economy, and higher savings properly channelled can lead to higher productive investments that in turn generate a virtuous cycle of more investments. There is thus no conflict between private savings and economic growth. China's and India's higher savings rate leads to savings going into investments in the economy for higher economic growth. Only in sharp economic downturns does the paradox of thrift operate, here lower consumption leads to lower production and layoffs, and the economy goes into a tailspin as consumers hoard their cash and postpone purchases. There is an element of fear in that kind of downturn. So its aunique animal. With the government stepping in to provide investment, make up for jobs lost, and restoring confidence, the paradox of thrift does not operate. ANd its ok and desirable to have consumers save especially when they are so overstretched as they are today. A real world example is that much of the US credit card debt is at 20% interest rates or more. In just 5 years says Robert Frank each dollar invested in reducing debt would support more than $2.50 of additional consumption, in 10 years more than $6. Savings matter. The wastefulness of spending is not a given. It depends on where the government is spending. If there are productive investments like infrastructure that are waiting to be made, then with some due diligence and care the investments can be very efficient....

On March 20, reports show that the testing facilities in states in the U.S. have had to set priorities on who gets tested first. High risk areas identified by authorites come first. For this reason Corlado health authorites moved a test centrer in Denver to Telluride a ski community that has been hard hit. In Minnesota health department commissioner identified priorities and limited testing to health care workers, inpatients at hospitals and people in group living facilities. A backlog means tests can take 5 days in Colorado, and Colorado has capacity for 250 tests a day (March 20). Testing was centred first by the U.S. government at the Centre for Disease Control. On reconsideration the state and local authorites, private companies, were allowed to conduct the tests, to speed things up. But local areas in many cases lack supplies or enough test kits and protective gear that is needed. This WSJ report says that the Trump administration is also shifting their strategy to social distancing to contain the outbreak. The federal government says it is aware of shortages in chemicals used in the tests. New York City officials say they have testing capacity for 5000 people per day, and New York State Governor Cuomo says the state can test 6000 people per day. (March 20). ...

The new plan of the Obama administration in August 2016 to tackle climate change is to cut power plant emissions of carbon dioxide by 32% by 2030 from 2005 levels. This will increase the energy from renewables to 28% of the total by 2030 from about 13% in 2014. The power industry was given more time to comply by shifting the first year to begin complying to 2022 from 2020. The final rule will also provide for generating more energy from nuclear power which provides 20% of the electricity, and which will help reach the 32% target for cutting emissions by 2030. It will also give more flexibility for the shift to natural gas from coal by giving credits towards compliance for projects starting early, rather than mandating a large shift early.

India's Supreme Court ruled that Vodafone PLC does not owe $2.2 billion in taxes on the acquisition of a majority stake in Hutchison Essar Ltd. The Indian tax authorites were directed to return 25 billion rupees ($500 million) which Vodafone had deposited. With declining foreign investment in India and a lower growth rate of about 7%, this tax case had assumed larger significance. The Supreme Court decision emphasized that taxing Vodafone "would amount to imposing capital punishment for capital investment." Vodafone had difficulties in its Indian operations- a $3.4 billion impairment charge in May 2010 because of strong competition. Vodafone is estimated to have invested $26 billion in India since 2007, and in the fiscal year ending March 2011 showed only $115 million in profit on sales of $3.86 billion.

A World Bank 2008 Report concluded that Brazil's current state of education would lead to its falling behind other developing economies, and act as a constraint on growth. Brazil's 15 year old chidren came in 49th out of 56 countries on the reading exam for the Program for International Student Assessment, with more than half scoring in the test's bottom reading level in 2006, with scores in math and science worse than that. Of the 25 million workers who could join the work force in 2010, about 22% are not considered qualified for the labor market, according to a government report. The World Bank Report says Brazil stands to miss out on the "demographic window," in which increasing numbers of younger workers make the economy more productive, unless it addresses problems in education.

Nestle outbid Danone for the deal, paying what analysts say is a 20% premium. The deal was important for Nestle to secure its position in the fast growing infant nutrition business in China. With the acquisition Nestle would have a 9.7% market share in China, after Mead Johnson with 11.7%, and about tied with Danone at 9.8%. Nestle has a 17% share of the $27 billion market worldwide for baby milk formula, followed by Mead Johnson Nutrition with 15% and Danone with 13%, according to Euromonitor International. The Aam Aadmi, or Common Man political party founded by Mr. Kejriwal in India. It is expected to take 20-25 seats out of 70 in the Delhi elections. India scholar Ashutosh Varney at Brown University, says the anti-corruption movement is different from earlier protests because corruption is perceived differently by today's employees working in the large pirvate sector compared to public sector employees in previous decades when the private sector was still small. For this middle class corruption takes on a different meaning as holding back the country's economy and development, and making day to day life difficult for ordinary people because of corrupt officials in the government bureaucracy. This also suggests that the anti-corruption movement will be an active part of Indian political life in the future.

In Fed meetings Evans was supported by vice chairman Janet Yellen, with Minneapolis Fed president Kocherlakota and Boston Fed president Rosengren offering similiar proposals. The WSJ's Alessandra Galloni speaks with Mario Monti, the Italian premier, for in-depth interviews. Here Galloni and Walker provide an account of what happened during and after the June 28, 2012 summit of European leaders. Monti described the comments of ECB president Draghi in early August- about ECB buying of bonds of Italy and Spain being within the mandate of the ECB if monetary transmission channels were not working properly to reduce yields- as a bold effort following the agreement made at the June 28 summit to support Italy and Spain. Monti expressed the idea that Draghi should feel morally and politically justified if and when he makes the bold moves to rescue the euro. The only problem he says is whether one has to wait till the night before the euro is about to disintegrate for this to happen. This is the first time Monti has publicly expressed the possibility of this happening.
