Shortages of natural gas lead to a 40% rise in prices. China is bidding high for gas supplies as it faces shortages of natural gas for heating during the coming winter. The UK and Europe also face shortages. Russia has the largest reserves of natural gas and is by far the largest producer. The start of the undersea Nordstream 2 pipeline avoids use of existing Russian pipeline through Ukraine. It is seen as a way to bring in more supplies to Europe.

Australia is another large producer of natural gas. China is now changing its import ban of Australian coal and natural gas as it faces a cold winter.

He will be the new Foreign Minister of Germany in a coalition agreement between the CDU of Merkel and the SPD party. After losing the election- even though polls showed him at 50% support in Feb. 2017- Schulz ruled out another coalition with Merkel's CDU which appeared to drain the SPD of energy and identity.  With the need to avoid fresh elections Schulz agreed to Merkel's overtures. He has a passion for football, and it played a part in his turning to alcoholism and missing out on graduating from high school. Yet he rebounded, running a bookstore with his sister- books were an elixir for Schulz- and becoming mayor of a small town Wurselen near Aachen in western Germany. His start in European politics came with a win for European parliament seat in 1994, rising to be president.   ...

The Biden administration had asked the Saudis to hold off till the next meeting of OPEC+ before making production cuts, or at least wait for 1 month. The Saudis went ahead with the production cuts even though the UAE,Kuwait and Iraq agreed with the US, and only supported the Saudi decision for unanimity within OPEC+. It comes only months after president Biden visited Riyadh.

Big banks in the US post big increases in profit and revenue in 2023. Chase bank posted 52% increase in first quarter 2023 profit and record revenue. Chase attracted $50 billion in deposits from midsized banks. The problems at midsized banks, including collapse of SVB bank, have not affected the large banks. Depositors shifted deposits from midsized banks to larger banks. The Fed's sharp increase in interest rates to 4.75%-5.0% from about zero% in 2021 have increased bank margins as interest rates on deposits have not been increased as much. The glut in deposits means banks could keep depositor interest rates lower. The result is that America's banking system is in strong shape during a localized banking crisis affecting startups and Silicon Valley.

This WSJ report looks at the U.S. unemployment report showing unemployment rate dropping from 14.7% to 13.3%. The hardest hit leisure and hospitality industry is rebounding first with the largest gains in jobs as the economy recovers. 1.4 million jobs were added in this sector. Construction is lso coming back with 464,0000 jobs added, Unemployment for Hispanics and Blacks is higher than for whites. Black unemployment rate is steady at 16.8%, Hispanic unemployment at 17.6% down from about 19%. Women are showing higher unemployment rate than men, partly reflecting their higher numbers in the leisure and hospitality, education sectors where social distancing measures are needed becauseof social contact.

After a meeting with 16 state leaders Germany's chancellor Olaf Scholz agreed on tighter restrictions to curb spread of Covid-19. Under new rules only people with two vaccinations plus with a covid negative test or booster shot will be allowed into restaurants and bars. The booster shot vaccination drive will be a major action plan in weeks to come, and Scholz emphasized importance of booster shots.

The Irish far economy is vulnerable and the Irish farmer at risk following Brexit. Rivals to prime minister Varadkar in the coming election say he has the M50 mentality, referring to the beltway around Dublin, not thinking enough of the Irish farm economy. A hard Brexit would have cut the Irish growth to 0.7% under Theresa May and now to 3.7% under Boris Johnson from the 6% for 2019.  This is happening as the Irish farmer depends on Britain for exports as he has for seven centuries.  Britain is the biggest importer of agricultural products from Ireland. Sinn Fein is gaining ground in this urban-rural divide with 25%, and so is Centre right Fiana Fail at 24%, with 20% for the current prime minister's party, in recent polls. Irish economy also depends on imports from Britain for machinery and trade agreement with Britain is crucial for Ireland now that Brexit has happened.
