A key part of Modi's address was about meeting the needs of 1.4 billion people in a way that was never met before for hundreds of years. Providing health coverage to something like the whole population of South America. Putting money directly in the bank accounts of something like the whole population of North America. How do you govern a country with 2500 parties and 22 parties governing in different states of the Union? How do you deal with a country with 13 major languages? The challenges are unprecedented and even more to ensure proper delivery of services to the entire population, that has never happened before. It truly is an astounding democracy and has been for 75 years- the only way to know is to go travel throughout India.

The story of how a shoe company Hoka One with an odd sounding name made itself known and managed its growth from $3 million to $1 billion, patiently working through each step, not rushing anything. It was started by two French men who met at a ski race in the French Alps. It means in Maori, a New Zealand language- flying over the earth. They took shoes from a minimalist approach to a maximalist one by building larger shoes with a design that would make them very comfortable to wear. They shipped 1100 pairs to the US in 2010, and in 2012 Deckers took a stake, later buying the company. It started with word of mouth in the running community and then spread during hybrid work in the pandemic. It went from running shops to REI and special retailers and only carefully to select stores at larger chains like Dick's Sporting Goods. Each step was gradual, carefully taken, an unusual approach in this business.

Indian prime minister says on the lawn of the White House that India does not want to replace China in manufacturing, it wants to see India as the world's manufacturing centre in diversified supply chains where there is no overconcentration in one country which happened before the pandemic. Biden does not favor free trade agreements because in addition to undermining American workers and the environment, it also has the effect of shifting manufacturing to China because of loose agreement clauses about sources of manufacture and because many of the countries in the free trade agreements depend on China for manufacturing. India and the US are at a unique inflection point because both countries are gearing up for  new relationships in manufacturing and in the supply chains.

WSJ interview with Narendra Modi before he meets Joe Biden at the White House. This interview talks about India seeking larger role in world affairs, about Indian democracy. Seen from inside India the perspective is different. India is at the same stage where China was in 1990-2000 with the rising aspirations of a billion people, Japan in the Meiji period in 1900. It is all about jobs, investment, technologies and manufacturing on a scale that surpasses China in that period with newer technologies to meet the rising aspirations of 1.4 billion people. China's trade with the US was three times higher than the Indian trade with the US in 2022, India desperately wants to catch up and fast. The Danish ambassador to India was asked what he saw in India today and he said it was the rising confidence of people that struck him most. The digitalization that has changed the way government benefits are provided to 1.4 billion people and opened bank accounts for all, provided delivery of services to all parts of the population. The infrastructure that is being built at breakneck pace, and new colleges and universities expanding access to quality education, healthcare.   ...

As inflation is down by half to 4% in the US in May compared to 2022, and down to 6.1% in the European Union, inflation in the UK is stuck close to 9% in May 2023. Changes in government, with three prime ministers in three years and lack of policies that will adequately protect workers and families under the Conservatives, leave the British people facing a cost of living crisis.

About two thirds of American 4th graders lack Reading Proficiency in English as shown in this report in NAEP. Resources are needed in this work when $346 billon went into investments in new ventures with much capital wasted in 2021. That two thirds of American fourth graders failed to show proficiency in reading comprehension in NAEP is a very serious problem in the US. This report is found in NYT buried somewhere where it could go unnoticed. The title is also accepting and passive and makes no mention about the 4th grader's English proficiency skills on NAEP released some months back.

The Hunter Biden investigation for non payment of taxes and illegally carrying a firearm was done under the US Attorney for Delaware David Weiss in 2018 appointed by Republicans, and extended into the Democratic Biden administration with Attorney General Merrick Garland. It ends in a plea deal. WSJ says this protects the Biden administration from any claims that it was helping the president's son.  He is the second son of Joe Biden and Neilia Biden. His mother and sister were killed in a car accident when he was a child. The only survivors Hunter and his brother Beau. Beau died of cancer in 2015. Hunter suffered a decline after that period leading to a divorce with Buhle in 2017, a troubling period for the whole Biden family she says. Hunter is a graduate of Georgetown and of Yale law school.

About 80% of Swiss voters supported the 15% corporate minimum tax that will bring an additional 2.8 billion dollars in tax revenue. If the Swiss had not backed it, the additional revenue from lower Swiss taxes of about 11% and the 15% would have gone to other countries. The Biden administration and many EU countries have considered this one of the most important achievements for fairness, and to support much needed state spending in their countries to maintain the quality of life.
