Over the short run Europe presents some opportunities after Germany's Merz gets the constitutional brake on spending removed and plans $1 trillion in spending on infrastructure and defense. The US is busy with immigration and other challenges, and tariffs are part of the effort to stop fentanyl on Canada, Mexico and China. It warns of sea levels rise as high as 8 feet by the year 2100. It shows damage from climate change that is already happening from a rise in the U.S. by 1.8 degree Fahrenheit of global warming since 1900. Trump has announced withdrawal by the U.S. from the Paris Climate Change Agreement that would cut U.S. greenhouse gas emissions by 26-28 percent by 2025 compared to 2005 levels. The Trump administration is relaxing rules by the EPA that would have contributed to the goals of the Paris Agreement.

DJT takes action on Venezuela for not taking action fast enough to accept deportees from the eight million that left the Latin American country over the last 10 years because of mismanaging the economy, runaway inflation and repression of dissent. He also cited that free and fair elections were not honored by the regime of president Maduro who followed after the death of Hugo Chavez in March 2013.

The higher US tariffs ranging from 41% to 345% on Vietnam, Malaysia, Thailand, and Cambodia will make it difficult for China to use these countries for factories that then dump highly subsidized product  (solar panels, other product) in US markets, at prices that are below production cost. India and the US are nearing a trade deal that gives India a chance to become a major manufacturing center for fair trade supplying the US. India will plan a partnership with US in which US goals and manufacturing are supported while at the same time making some parts at cost competitive with China.

This report in DW.com looks at the problems behind the suspension of all operations at India's Jet Airways.  Jet Airways faced little competition in its early years in the early 1990's and was a success as a full service airline competing with state controlled Air India and Indian Airlines. By 2005 the emergence of low cost carriers operating on thin margins and using a cost efficient model of operation hit Jet Airways hard. It still operated as a full service airline failing to change its model to tackle a cost conscious growing Indian market. The $500 million used to acquire a weak budget airline Air Sahara was a costly move leading to a writeoff of the entire investment and a lost opportunity to adapt Jet Airways to the new cost efficient models roiling the airline industry in Asia.  It is difficult to operate in a environment where a depreciating rupee could add an additional burden from volatile oil prices for cost of fuel to operate. Airlines that operated on razor thin margins such as Indigo and SpiceJet used cost and efficiency parameters as key to flying passengers. Jet Airways failed to make this the priority, continuing to operate as a full service airline. The favorable oil price environment for a brief period in 2015 was not used by the airline to streamline costs.  Add to this the effect of Goods and Services Tax which increased costs by 18%, the effects of demonetisation in reducing passenger ability to buy with cash, and the 5% tax on jet fuel in 2018, creating a financial crisis at Jet Airways.  In the end banks decided not to extend further financing for the airline to operate and looked for a large buyer. ...

There is only one way to interpret this. As the August 1 deadline approached first the Japanese and then the Europeans who held out till the end sometimes treating the US with disdain and ridicule, realized that the US was dead serious about tariffs. Even the US business community tended to treat DJT tariffs with disdain not realizing that the tariff battles were first fought against Japan by Deputy USTR Robert Lighthizer under Reagan in the 1980's always to get a fair deal for the US. The recalcitrance of the Europeans and the Japanese can be understood by the non tariff barriers Japan placed on US products and the 10% tariff on US autos the European Union had in place for decades when the US only had a 2.5% tariff on German car imports.  The media in the US and Europe has utterly failed to tell the US side of the story. Reports from the Sixth China North-South Lung Cancer Summit meeting of 300 experts focusses on controlling tobacco use and promoting early detection and treatment of lung cancer. Lung cancer is now the leading form of cancer in China, with 22.7% of cancer deaths each year. Currently about 1 million die in China from smoking related illness each year. CCTV reports this is increasing by 26.9% a year. Causes cited are aging population, air pollution, and widespread smoking. About one in three of China's people smoke, or about 350 million. Awareness of the dangers of tobacco use is not high outside two or three major cities. China manufactures about 1.7 trillion cigarettes a year, according to CCTV, and tobacco contributes 7-10 percent of state revenues.

Automakers in the U.S. may be getting more than they expected from the Trump administration's effort to  loosen pollution control laws for automobiles. The Trump administration's effort to change automobile fuel efficiency and pollution laws will run into challenges from the state of California which is allowed to set its own rules under the Clean Air Act.

This would create two different markets inside the U.S. one following California type stricter rules for fuel efficiency and mileage, and for pollution, and a different market with looser laws for the rest of the country. This is something the automakers face as unintended consequences of their actions to loosen the fuel efficiency legislation.

Alexander Kudascheff of the DW.com says in this editorial opinion that the secular republic of Kemal Ataturk is about to become an Islamic autocracy. Kudascheff cites a number of reasons why the failed coup seems partly improbable such as it being led by the Air Force and Erdogan being able to fly back to Istanbul, not cutting communications,  and the intelligence agencies not having earlier knowledge about it. The overreaction to what is seen as a coup that was put down so quickly raises questions about the coup itself, says DW.com. It points out that Turkey now being admitted to the European Union now seems less probable than ever. The 3 month emergency is also seen with much skepticism. The coup and Erdogan's overeaction are a big negative event for Turkey-Eu relations.

This report in the WSJ says Reince Preibus, Republican National Committee chairman, has told party officials on Oct. 8, 2016, to redirect party funds away from nominee Trump to down-ballot candidates. This means the Republican party will try to get Clinton supporters to vote who are likely to vote for candidates like Rubio in Florida and Portman in Ohio. Republican Portman has joined Senator McCain in withdrawing support for Trump. This is the result of a video showing Trump making lewd comments about women in a conversation with Billy Bush of NBC. Speaker of the House of Representatives, Paul Ryan, immediately disinvited Trump from a rally in Wisconsin and withdrew his support leading to a big outflow of support from Congressman and Republican leaders. A former chairman of the Republican party in California describes this as the biggest crisis for Republicans since Watergate. The Republican party now stops its mail program to voters that supported Trump and redirects it to down-ballot candidates. It also comes as the Republican party funds and party infrastructure are a necessary and vital  part of any Republican nominee's effort to get elected. The Republican strategy may now be to try and preserve its control of Congress, as a loss in Wisconsin, Illinois or Missouri, could give the Democrats control of the Senate and other losses reduce its House majority. This appears to be the backup strategy of Paul Ryan as Speaker, and the leading Republican after his overwhelming win in his Senate seat against a Trump supported candidate. ...

The Ukraine war with increases in prices of oil and natural gas, and food imports has hit Bangladesh hard.  The currency has declined by 20% which also adds to the cost of imports. The government of Sheikh Hasina is seeking $1 billion each from the Asian Development Bank and the World Bank.  It is also seeking $4.5 billion for budgetary and balance of payments support through the new Resilience and Sustainability Facility set up by the IMF. The government is doing this in advance to avoid a situation in which most of the tax revenues go to paying for imports at high prices with little left for spending on development needs. Bangladesh imports cooking oil, wheat and other food, as well as fossil energy. The current account deficit is $17 billion and the foreign exchange reserves are about $39 billion in July, down from $45.5 billion in 2021, enough for 5 months of imports for a nation of 160 million people.  Action is being taken to curtail use of air conditioning at mosques.
