Gartner estimates smartphone shipments at 1 billion and tablet shipments at 184 million for 2013. Tablets are expected to outsell PC's in 2015, according to IDC. The growth is rapid paced, with 2012 sales at 120 million tablets, increasing from about 17 million in 2010 when the iPad was first introduced.

Contact tracing apps in the U.S. Britain and France have failed. Contact tracing app in Germany was downloaded 12 million times in the first week. Yet much of the contact tracing in Germany and cluster isolation has been achieved using low tech methods- using a computer with database, and teams of people in district offices all over Germany calling people.

The NHS App in Britain failed to get the cooperation of Apple. In the U.S. Google and Apple planned to have a contact tracing app ready but failed to come up with one. Tech has failed to come up with solutions during coronavirus and low tech solutions have worked well as in Germany and in places such as Kerala, India, when implemented quickly with very little delay.

Taiwan computer and iphone maker Foxconn is setting up a new EV business with $600 million investment. GM, Toyota, Stellantis and other auto companies are making their own EV's and accumulating expertise in the manufacture of EV vehicles which have fewer parts and use software. Foxconn has operated as a supplier to Apple. It hopes to become a supplier of EV's with initial progress in Asian countries.

Apple shares are down 25% says this WSJ article and asks the question whether Apple's best days are past. In the fastest growing markets in Asia and Africa, Apple iPhones are beyond the reach of about 95% of the population. The number of Apple iPhones sold in India have dropped 40% in 2018 compared to 2017. Apple's market share in India has fallen from 2% to 1%, according to Canalys research firm. The $1.8 billion in Indian sales is about half of what Apple executives had hoped for when Tim Cook visited India in 2016. Some call it a rout. Tim Cook seldom mentions India now. At the center of this is Apple's reluctance to change its business model of getting the highest margins, making not a range of handsets, but a few models selling at high prices. This is the strategy that Apple has used to revive the company from near bankruptcy in 1997. Competitors including Xiaomi, the Apple for China and India, tweak their phones constantly to address local concerns for battery life, and lower prices to get market penetration. Only 24% of Indians have a smartphone and India is fastest growing market. Friction with the Modi government which cannot be favorable to Apple's plans to push a high  margin product when competitors have similar but better value packages.   In price sensitive markets of Africa and Asia most people buy phones outright and use pay as you go plans, Apple is not popular. Even in China Apple's market share is down from 12.5% in 2015 to 8% in 2017, according to Canalys. Apple is reluctant to make many models offering lower prices and to address concerns such as battery life in India. In India 39 million people will add smartphones in 2018 with 75% costing less than $250, 95% costing less than $500. In Apple's lineup the iPhone 7 costs around $550. Competitors such as Xiaomi, OnePlus, Oppo, and Vivo flooded India with smartphones costing less than $200. Unlike Apple which spurns market research these companies do extensive research work on local situation. OnePlus has focussed on battery life and gained 30% share of the premium segment to Apple's 25%. By making the devices in India these companies avoid having to pay the 20% tariff. Apple has so far not put up a new plant with the restriction that India places of single brand retailers over 51% foreign owned to buy locally 30% of manufacturing materials. The Modi government felt Apple was not focussed enough on bringing high tech jobs to India and helping local manufacturing, a perception not conducive to expansion in India where "Made in India" is the government plan. This means opening Apple stores in India is less likely now.  The turnover of Apple India executives is also increasing with 3 new CEO's 2017- 2019. Apple's strategy of targeting wealthier Indians makes it not even a fringe player in the Indian market down to 1% of the market. Just as it shrinks in the Chinese market where most customers are price sensitive and the economy is slowing.   ...

WSJ looks at the growing size of these companies. At Microsoft the headcount is 101,000 outside the US, a 70% increase since 2019. Apple's 161,000 employees are much higher than the 137,000 in 2019. A small trimming of employees only took down 3000 employees.

Huawei launches its smartphone model the Ascend P6 at the historic performing arts location Roundhouse in London. Huawei is using the same marketing tactics used by Apple and copied by Samsung to get customer attention. Huawei, the second largest supplier of telecom equipmen after Ericsson of Sweden, is not known for its consumer products. This is the first time it is adopting high profile marketing strategies to upset the duopoly of Apple and Samsung in the smartphone market. Other competitors are LG, ZTE, Sony and Lenovo, each trying to take market share from Apple and Samsung. Apple lost over 5 points of market share in smartphones in 2012 and Samsung gained close to 4 points by coming up with a low priced range of smartphones. Samsung now faces competition in the lower priced segments from Huawei, Lenovo, ZTE and HTC, companies in China with products for this segment.

Germany's SPD Deputy Chancellor says in Kiev on August 25, 2025 after the abortive effort by DJT in Alaska for peace talks that improved Russia -US relations as two leading world nuclear powers but did not have the basics in place for Ukraine- Russia direct talks, with Putin asking for territory in the east. "In the three and a half years that this war has been going on, we have always shown that we are not ducking away, but stand by the side of the Ukrainians. And that will also apply to security guarantees."  The big change is that the SPD under Klingbeil in Germany is now working with CDU's Merz to build up Germany's defense forces to act as a deterrent for Europe. There is a change in the mood in Germany and in Europe, from Sweden and UK , France, Italy, for concerted action in Europe that was not seen before. By taking on responsibilities for Europe with 2-5% defense expenditures this has removed the differences between the US and Europe. It means a prolongation of the war but also means this may lead to a stronger Europe, better Russia- US relations, and a Russian and Ukraine more willing to come to a peace agreement based on terms where no side appears to be the loser. Klingbeil added- It is important to have a "really strong Ukrainian army that is also capable of defense. And the second thing is that armaments production is also being ramped up here in Ukraine as well, thereby putting Ukraine in a position to defend itself and deter attacks." If European history since 1400 is any guide when the powers on either side were eventually counterbalanced the power that took a an aggressive position early had to settle for a peace settlement with both sides not appearing the loser. ...

DW.com's Becker looks at how much an iPhone would cost if made in the USA. Jason Dedrick of Syracuse University says it would add $20-$30 if final assembly was done in the U.S.. If components and parts were also made in the U.S. this would go up to $80-$90. Other factors are that the production clusters set up by Foxconn have taken three decades to set up and would take time to replicate. President Trump has said Apple should make the iPhones in the U.S. to create jobs. As Foxconn is rapidly adding robots and automation the number of jobs are shrinking in the production process.

Apple CEO Cook's blue collar roots in Alabama. He says he has worked at an aluminium factory in Virginia and a paper factory in Alabama, and grew up spending a lot of time in factories. Cook was hired by Steve Jobs to fix Apple's manufacturing operations after Jobs rejoined the company in 1997. At that time Apple's manufacturing plants had serious quality problems and high levels of rework in plants, and Apple had high levels of inventory. Cook was largely responsible for the new manufacturing setup at Apple. Jobs did not get it into the details of manufacturing- being more interested in the design aspects of the product- and people close to Apple say Jobs rarely visited Apple plants. This gives Cook greater credibility as Apple tries to change the way its products are made in China. Under Cook Apple has joined the Fair Labor Association and initiated FLA inspections of Foxconn plants making Apple products.

One way US president Biden hopes to pay for replacing America's crumbling infrastructure is by bringing back the principle of fair sharing of the tax burden to 45 of America's largest companies. Companies like Amazon, Apple and Google would now pay the minimum corporate tax rate of 15%. The idea of a global minimum tax rate is put forward by US central bank chief Janet Yellen and the US Treasury Department, and also by president Biden. Over four decades China moved from a nation of bicycles to some of the newest infrastructure in the world just as the US and Europe's infrastructure decayed and was not renovated. On April 9 US responded to China's 34% tariff with another 50% tariff of its own on China. The US tariff now stands at 104% to China's 84%. China says it won't back down and "will fight to the end." The US president DJT is now certain to restore world trade to the days before China entered the World Trade Organization and upended the world trade order leading to the deindustrialization of the US when US corporations followed Apple in 1998. With Tim  Cook in charge of Apple manufacturing in 1998 doing the first major act of outshoring the whole manufacturing base of a company to China. It was a strategy- to use the huge profits of a three punch approach- brand the product at the high end to command high price in the US through innovation and design (punch 1), followed by making using Chinese labor at low cost in China (punch 2), to generate the huge profits to create a virtuous cycle of investment from these profits to generate new cycle of growth (punch 3). What Apple gained, America's workers lost. This was sold by economists at the service of corporate narrative that it was good for America in the face of the facts showing just the reverse for 25 years 2000-2025. Soon almost the entire manufacturing base of the US was shipped out to China, or Chinese supply bases Vietnam. Japan fell in line and became a supplier to this China Manufacturing for the World. What started out as Microsoft demolishing Apple by 1998 and Apple using this 1-2-3 punch strategy turned into first a disaster for American workers, a loss of the working class leading to the loss of the middle class backbone of America, replaced by Silicon Valley and financial interests in New York City and disproportionate rewards to capital, the rural and small towns, cities across America's heartland thrown into decay and neglect.   ...

Rarely has a company dominated its business in this manner from the standpoint of profits with only about 20% of the market in smartphones. Apple profits in the 2nd quarter were $10.7 billion, increasing from $7.74 billion in the prior year quarter. The iPad unit sales declined by 18% for the 2nd quarter 2015, the sixth quarter of such declines and fewer customers upgrading. The iPad has also not taken off in the workplace. Mac unit sales were up 9%, even though the PC market declined in units by 9.5% globally for the quarter. Apple shares up 39% in 2015, fell by 6.7% over concerns about slowing China sales....
