In the 10 campus system of the University of California about 40% of the student undergraduates now come from households with yearly income of less than $50,000. Many students with full tution aid come from a low income household, and have to reduce meals or use a food pantry. About 183 schools are now part of the College and University Food Bank Alliance.

Bank of America has exposure of $50 billion in a lawsuit related to the Merrill Lynch acquisition in 2009. After the vote shareholders including large pension funds in Ohio and the Netherlands suffered losses, as $50 billion of Bank of America's stock value was wiped out on subsequent days when the true extent of losses were revealed.

Singapore's state investment company, Temasek Holdings, has incurred a paper loss of $2.3 billion on its investment in Merrill Lynch. Temasek bought 9% of Merrill in December 2007 for $5 billion or $48 a share. The effective purchase price was reduced when it received an additional $2.5 billion in shares in July 2008.
