The finance minister of the Netherlands, Jeroen Dijsselbloem, followed Jean-Claude Juncker as Eurogroup president in Jan. 2013. He was on the job for only 5 months as finance minister and lacked experience, the Cypriot president in his position for one month, leading to a lack of communication and absence of coordination in this crisis. Germany will reach 85% of gas storage with Russian gas reduced to 10% of consumption by September 1, 2022. The next target is to get it up to 95% for German gas storage facilities by November 1, 2022. "The reservoirs are filling quicker than planned," German Economy Minister Habeck told Der Spiegel. The big part of gas supplies are now from Norway and Netherlands. And LNG supplies will come from France.

The Netherlands, home of the Maastricht summit, is seeing public opinion shifting to negative opinions about the euro and supporting countries such as Greece. Some experts say the idea was right but the method was wrong. Some polls show a majortiy supporting going back to the old currency, the gilder. An EU survey in 2009 showed 80% of Dutch people supporting the euro. Frits Bolkestein, former EU commissioner for internal markets, points out that Chancellor Kohl insisted on Italy which had not met its debt criteria becoming a founding member of the monetary union, something that made it possible for over-spending Greece to join the euro only 2 years after the 11 founding members. Bolkestein led the party that now runs the Dutch government. His view is that political romanticism overwhelmed sound economic thinking and realities in the formation of the eurozone.

It took 1 month for her to walk. “For anyone who needs some inspiration, break your neck and you can win Olympic gold,” says Maroes.  Glover who came in second has three children. Liew laments the lack of investment in childcare for woman athletes with small children, 124 years after women were admitted into the Olympics. Paris Olympics has a small investment in childcare, a nursery for the first time. Liew is right in saying throwing flowers from a distance at athletes is the easy part, giving working parents the tools to do well and childcare comes down to choices that we make. ...

Anne Applebaum of the WP describes the effect of a Dutch referendum on a 2014 European Union trade and cooperation treaty with Ukraine which taps into Dutch anti-immigrant sentiment of right wing parties and anti-corruption sentiment of left wing parties. It passed with a two thirds majority and 32 % of people voting. Applebaum says the centre right government in the Netherlands has not commented on the referendum which is "consultative." She says officials in the Dutch government told her they did not want to become the focus of anti-government sentiment in the media, because of the small majority in parliament.

In the early years says de Graaf Putin talked incessantly about the modernization of Russia, Russia joining the Modern World in the years of the Enlightenment, Russia fighting off Napoleon and under the Soviets Nazi Germans. Graaf says he talked about- “Peter the Great and European interests, of Catherine the Great and literacy and the Enlightenment. He spoke of Alexander I and Europe joining to defeat Napoleon." Deep down Putin felt in these talks 11,000 of them on the Putin site which puts up his speeches and talks over a 20 year period, which Niels Grost with his fluency in Russian has looked at. Of these 3000 talks and speeches are in this reference to the great Czars. Even before Ukraine there was a sense of hurt that considering the vast expanse that Russia occupies in Europe Russia had by restoring the old Russia by 2000 found itself in a odd predicament. As de Graaf and Swain point out the US market based economy based on GDP, the US presidents such as Bush and Obama saw Russia as a  middle power based on its exports and imports, its trade, its commerce which was the only way they could see the world. This led to a special kind of shortsightedness says this interview in the WSJ. Putin's key adviser says of Russia's goal - to be seen as a Northern European Power (from WSJ) in 2025.Putin sees Russia as looking for "respect," as a goal.  This is where US business may have got it all wrong- the authors say about China and India- and the US, seeing themselves as Empires not in today's Modern World as with imperialist ambitions, but with a historic sense of regional presence across Asia and North America with their rapid modernization. DJT's talk of Canada as a 51st state, one finds US business as accepting the idea that Canada is part of the US regional influence. And under the Monroe Doctrine of 1824 revived by no less than Teddy Roosevelt and FDR, in its cooperation form by JFK in 1960, the regional influence of the United States in the Western Hemisphere is also accepted by US business and the American public. It is this context that the authors say offer an alternative view of the Russian leader and his policies. The total population of Norway of 5.5 million is less than the population of the Houston region. Should it exercise such an important role in the affairs of Europe much less of the world? It was under Stoltenberg's appointment in 2014 as head of NATO after losing an election in Norway, with Merkel and Obama's support, that gradually changed the perception of NATO as too close to Russia's borders so that by 2019 when Covid took place the situation deteriorated in Europe beyond recognition. Russia and China joined together and Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022 with Stoltenberg in a role in NATO that reflected more the British view of NATO than how DJT and other Republican leaders perceived NATO. As America turns this chapter of Bush-Clinton-Bush-Obama years of failed politics in which US lost control in its own backyard to drug trafficking gangs in Mexico and Venezuela, conducted wars in remote deserts and mountains in the Middle East, and lost its economic position to China, turned over NATO to  politicians who followed a British view of hostility to Russia that did not reflect the American view of working in cooperation with Russia, China and other major powers, this appointment of Stoltenberg a figure in the Norway establishment may be seen as another failure of the Merkel/Obama years. ...

Weakness and lack of economic growth in the rest of Europe is having an impact on the growth rate in Germany. In the second and third quarters of 2011 combined, economic growth in Germany was 1.6%. The economic growth for France during that period was 0.6%. For the third quarter, acccording to Eurostat, the European statistical agency, Belgium had no growth, and the Netherlands reported a GDP decline. Spain showed no growth. Germany had higher growth rates during the early period of recovery after the 2009 financial crisis, and it now appears that this may be because German companies were better able to export, having held down labor costs, and the euro was weaker than what the rate for the deutsche mark would be. This shows a slowdown across the whole of Europe replacing the earlier situation where Germany far outpaced other European countries.

Alexander Van Der Bellen, a pro Europe independent candidate supported by the Green Party wins Austria's presidential election with 53.3% of the vote. The anti immigrant Freedom Party candidate Norbert Hofer wins 46% of the vote. Van Der Bellen is for an open Europe and is pro Europe. The election is seen in Germany as "lifting a great burden off of our shoulders," in the words of Sigmar Gabriel. The US is supplying Europe with liquified natural gas so that Europe can cope with a threatened cutoff or slowdown from Russian gas supplies. Much of the LNG that normally would go to Japan, Taiwan and other Asian countries is being diverted to Europe with a threat of Russian invasion of Ukraine. The US, is with Qatar and Australia a major LNG producer. This WSJ report shows LNG tankers entering and unloading at the Gate Terminal in Netherlands, a key point for sending liquified natural gas to Germany. Italy has its own entry terminals for LNG tankers. This will help Europe deal with its winter needs, even though things will be very tight if a Russian cutoff happens. One aspect of this supply of LNG will cause economic hardship in Germany and this is the price of LNG gas which has soared to five times when delivered in the Netherlands compared to US prices. LNG in gas forms shrinks to one six hundredth its size in volume as a liquid, making it possible for one LNG tanker that is about the size of 4 football fields to hold enough gas to power 70,000 homes for one year. Most LNG tankers can be unloaded in one day and go straight into port because some LNG is lost as ships wait. Most of the bottlenecks are further upstream in the reconversion into gas of the LNG liquid and in connecting to the gas grid.  ...

Jeroen Dijsselbloem, was finance minister of the Netherlands for 3 months when he was appointed to the position of Eurogroup president in Jan 2013, succeeding Luxembourg's prime minister, Jean-Claude Juncker. He is a 46 year old agricultural economist and a member of parliament for the Labor party, considered by many to be inexperienced for the job. He is outspoken compared to his predecessor. His comments about bank rescues being made by having bondholders and shareholders take up the cost, followed by depositors, has roiled financial markets. Shareholders and junior bondholders were wiped out as part of the nationalization of Dutch bank SNS Reaal NN in Feb. 2013, but depositors were safe. The reference to depositors has created anxiety for depositors at eurozone banks. Dijsselbloem's remarks about the Cyprus bailout and depositors taking losses as a model for future bank bailouts in the eurozone were criticized by many EU officials, including Benoit Coeure, a member of the ECB's executive board. Coeure told French radio station Europe 1: "The situation in Cyprus is very particular, and there aren't the same banking problems in other eurozone countries." Later Dijsselbloem referred to Cyprus as "an exceptional case." Similiar criticism was voiced by the opposition in the Netherlands parliament....

The decisive German response to the Ukraine invasion comes within 72 hours of the invasion. "It is our duty to support Ukraine to the best of our ability in defending against Putin's invading army," German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said. "That is why we are delivering 1000 antitank weapons and 500 Stinger missiles to our friends in Ukraine." Similar shipments are being made by Netherlands and Britain. The US has committed $350 million additional military aid to Ukraine including "lethal defensive assistance" against invading armored and airborne forces, in the first 48 hours of the invasion.

Germany's state development bank KfW has signed a memorandum of understanding with German energy company RWE AG to build a new LNG terminal at the northern port city of Brunsbuttel. Netherlands infrastructure group Gasunie will operate the new LNG terminal. The Nordstream 2 $11 billion project is now set aside and Germany plans to use the LNG terminals and other sources outside of Russia. Germany commissioned its gas market trading hub to buy LNG of 1.5 billion euros. 

Germany will now fast track another LNG terminal on the North Sea at Wilhelmshaven. That terminal would be operational in 3 years.

Dutch farmers protest a plan by the government to cut nitrogen emissions in line with EU laws by half by 2030, by cutting dairy farms by a third. Recently the Dutch Citizens Movement, a farmer protest party called BBB, won provincial elections. The government is now looking at how to meet protester demands and lower the goals away from dairy farming. The agricultural sector is large in Netherlands and it's agricultural exports are next to only the US, says NYT.
