President Trump says TikTok app would be banned in the U.S. after September 15. He said he had talked to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and told him Microsoft could buy the apps U.S. operations but if it does so a substantial portion of the price must go to the U.S. Treasury because of the approval of the deal the U.S. is giving after the review. He told Nadella "Look it can't be controlled for security reasons by China- too big,too invasive. The decision to focus on profitability was a critical choice made by Mulally and shows his instincts are right to let Ford's market share drop to its natural level and cut production to cut inventories and let ford scale down into a smaller but profitable and reilient company. The other was to focus on global cars and global product capabilities under Dennis Kuzak. And the third move to get marketing right with Jim Farley taken by Mullaly from Toyota's marketing organization. And the focus would be only on the Ford brand and logo, so Mulally will close Mercury models and sell the premium luxury brands except Volvo with the sale to Tata Motors. The market and stock price is responding and Ford has already shown a profit of $750 million in the second quarter of 2007 by being able to sustain higher prices with fewer cars to sell. The Fiesta compact goes on sale in the US in 2010 and this with the redesigned Focus and other models will show how far Ford can go. The risk is now more in the economy as BW estiimates show a $3 trillion overhang of overspending that occurred over the last decade that will have to be worked down by US consumers and so one can expect a continued and protracted decline in sales not just for Ford but for all manufacturers in the USA market....

The program if it took off was to spend 490 million British pounds to send migrants to Rwanda from Britain. A payment of 120 million pounds was made to Rwanda. WSJ says it is a huge waste of money. Each of the 2 migrants were paid $3000. Meanwhile record numbers of migrants entered Britain through the English Channel. Over 500 migrants crossed over in small boats each day in 2024, a 23% jump.

The UK based magazine The Economist will maintain its independence after a sale of 50% shares is completed to Exor or some other company. This is because the shares sold are "B" shares. "A" shares and trustee shares will be retained so that the independence of the magazine is not affected. The Economist has increased its circulation to 1.6 million in 2015 from about 1 million in 2006. It reaches a highly educated and upper class audience. The magazine has a unique culture in which journalists debate editorial direction and writers also do editing, with no writer's names mentioned for its short Time magazine type coverage of international topics. It also has a Intelligence and Statistical unit to provide more advanced coverage on some topics such as finance and policy.

The profit squeeze is evident in JP Morgan's net profit margin of 2.14% in the fourth quarter, declining from 2.19% in the prior quarter. Return on assets at 0.78%, down from 0.87% in 2013. Lower interest rates hurt JP Morgan's fixed income, currency and commodities business, and this is not expected to change much in 2015. Legal expenses were $1.1 billion in pretax terms for the fourth quarter 2014.

Startling fact seen in this chart of Federal Reserve Bank of St Louis in the adjoining article next to this one- that in 2026 we are seeing 1929-1937 levels of military spending to GDP ratio of 2-3% just before it jumped to 45% in 1940. It is a cautionary tale not to spend too little (2-4% is a danger point) as lack of military modernization means a lot more spending soon after, almost 10 times that- 10 times 4% or 40% in World War II.  Message to the US is not what Starmer and company are saying in Europe- it is that don't invite the existential crisis of 1940 again for western (US, EU, Canada, UK) and eastern democracies (India, Japan, Indonesia, Australia) by not doing military modernization. And 2-4% of GDP for military spending is not going to be enough to do this.

This report from Myamar's capital Naypyidaw, says the capital with six lane highways with hardly any cars is symbolic of Myanmar since independence from the British in 1948. For most of this period it has been ruled by the military which keeps a distance from the prior capital Rangoon because of protests for democracy. He points out that western disillusionment with Aung suu Kyi comes from a failure to understand her position as a counselor not allowed to assume the presidency because her children are British citizens, that most of the key ministries are controlled by the military. She is a symbolic head following the 2015 elections and needs to work with the military in a long term effort to bring Myanmar into the community of nations after decades of isolation. Reporting from Myanmar Cohen of the NYT says it is necessary to understand this to understand Myanmar today and Suu Kyi's reticence in the face of the crisis from Bangladeshi migrants becoming one third of the population of the northern region of Rakhine. Cohen also points out that behind the image of Buddhist Burma in western eyes is a region of tropical jungles in the north with minority communities that came under British rule in Burma, and the fears of losing their identity of Burmese Buddhists in the Rangoon region. Cohen ends with a plea to give Suu Kyi more time and to remember her "letters from Burma" about the need for the rule of law and how the long traumas of military rule have affected a whole generation of Burmese children. It is easy he says for western media who have not faced down guns to de sanctify Kyi's image, but she remains the last hope for Myanmar in what he calls a game that is being played out with military rulers over a long, long period. ...

"Cancel Culture"- how Democrats and Republicans Conservatives and Liberals see the shaming of people for their views on social media- it is having accountability for some, and seen as censorship or punishment by others. Pew Researchers show the views of different people by age, gender, political affiliation, on the idea of "cancel culture." Some say does it even help doing this on a platform like social media as it tends to exaggerate and is rarely helpful to educate people and create real conversations to increase knowledge. When people are being shamed for racism or sexism, there is little idea of getting people to change or for patient forgiveness, or educating on why certain behaviours are wrong. Yale University's 58 page document on where it went wrong on "holistic admissions" and "cancel culture," is an example of how "cancel culture" when adopted inadvertently at universities and colleges across the Nation can be misguided and not result in positive actions. In the process can this denigrate the achievements of western civilization through the Renaissance of ideas, the awakening of knowledge in Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries, the Enlightenment, and the Scientific Revolution that resulted from this. Followed by the Industrial Revolution unique in Europe and the US that created the Modern World and the standards of living, of literacy, education and healthcare, and transportation we know today. This is the question Yale and other universities are asking today in 2026. ...
