Mr. Trump gave the pope a first edition copy of Martin Luther King's writings, and Francis gave Trump a medal bearing an olive branch. Trump then met for 50 minutes with the Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Parolin.

Voters were split in places such as San Diego and Sacramento which have a higher degree of homeless than other places in California. California has one third of America's homeless people. Part of this is that there is a sense that this problem can't be solved, a sense of helplessness that nothing so far has worked. And confusion created about it shifting funds raised from a 1% tax on wealthy for mental health services to be delivered by counties and protests by local mental health organizations that it would prevent prevention efforts. This tax money is shifted to the state level which will put responsibility for solution in one place with a comprehensive attack on the problem in a multipronged way getting to the root of the problem with adequate funding for the first time- the unaffordability of California housing where a 1-2 bedroom house could cost $1 million.

The Athletic talks to mentors Young and Thorne who mentored Chris Eubanks as he developed his skills as a tennis player, reaching the quarter finals at Wimbledon this year. A meeting with Donald Young when Chris was 12 years old was a turning point. It gave Chris the opportunity to practice at Young's dad's tennis centre, the South Fulton Tennis Centre in Atlanta. Young then took Chris at 16 to tournaments around the world to practice and get a feel for the tennis circuit. Thorne helped bring Eubanks to Georgia Tech where he studied industrial engineering and business. Questions of self-belief remained for Chris Eubanks over the years, which he has overcome on his own, by taking time out to work for Tennis Channel. The U.S. is moving quickly to gain access to an effective vaccine by September or October 2020. It is doing this by providing the money for companies to conduct trials and ramp up manufacturing in a big way. The U.S. government has agreed to give Astra Zeneca upto $1.2 billion to secure supply of a Oxford University developed vaccine which could be ready by October. Astra Zeneca has agreed to make the vaccine under a licensing deal with Oxford University's Jenner Institute and promised it will not make a profit on this. U.S. has also given $483 million to Moderna in Cambridge, Massachusetts, for making the vaccine. Both Oxford and Moderna are testing the vaccine on humans. Oxford uses a tested older technology, Moderna a new technology. UK has given Astra Zeneca $79 million to secure 100 million doses of the vaccine, with 30 million ready by September. Oxford is also in negotiations with Gavi the international vaccine alliance, and Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations on further deals to boost production. Oxford began a 1100 person study in April, and is  doing a 5000 person trial in late May.  ...

Akasaki of Meijo University, Amano of Nagoya University, Japan, and Nakamura of UC Santa Barbara, produced blue light beams from semiconductors in the 1990's. Nakamura, working for Nichia Chemicals developed his own version of the LED in 1988 following the earlier efforts of Akasaki and Amano, leading to the development of a cheaper easier method of creating LED. The technology is also behind the blue ray disc by using blue lights much shorter wavelength to store 4X more information. Today it is the technology used in smartphone screens.

US and Iran accept Pakistan's mediation of the war with a 2 week ceasefire and opening of Straits of Hormuz- April 7 2026. The mediation by prime minister Sharif of Pakistan gave both sides in the war a way to back down. Both sides agreed to talks in Islamabad, Pakistan. As a partner of Pakistan, China may also have a role in setting up a settlement as China and Japan have the most to lose from the Straits of Hormuz being closed, oil prices rocketing up to $115 and higher, and even a prolonged shutdown of Hormuz Straits. Both China and Japan get 90% of their imports from Hormuz Straits. Oil prices drop to the $100 level from $115 after the announcement of talks in Islamabad. This is not a long term settlement. After the two weeks US president meets president Xi of China in Beijing shortly afterwards on May 14-15. It is likely that preparations for that trip will involve China and Pakistan working together to get the US and Iran to agree to an extension of the ceasefire. One outcome of this war is as Le Monde has noted- the unreliability of Hormuz supplies and shift to imports from US and Venezuela and other parts of the world for fossil fuels. And with this a renewed effort to reduce the fossil fuels needed by accelerating renewable energy supplies in Europe, India and China. More attention will also be focused on reducing the proliferation of nuclear weapons by all major powers. Removing US involvement in NATO may also turn out to be positive in some ways to bring Russia and US as nuclear powers to better working relationships, and reduce the nuclear arms race and weapons race. For Europe it means meeting needs of Ukraine and improving military capabilities. The overall result may be positive for all countries. The Middle East region will be seen as one in which no powers should get involved in and the Middle East will also find it has squandered its valuable oil dividend in five decades of wars and mismanagement and fall behind the rest of Asia and Europe, the US in economic progress and development. ...

U.S. bicycle sales at $2.6 billion up 81% and use of city bicycles up 141% in New York city for Citibike- with single trip pass buyer at 516,000. Mr. Van Scyvoc a 33 year old Brooklyn resident collects bikes around Cleveland where his father a retired firefighter lives and takes them by pickup truck to a bike stand he has at Fort Green park in Brooklyn. There he sells bikes bought for $80 to $250 for $300 to 500. First he has to have them washed clean and then serviced in Brooklyn by an IT engineer who now repairs bikes.

A look at the Palestine conflict from 1947 to 2023. The British Mandate for Palestine gave Britain a role in administering this part of the Middle East after it took control of the region from the defeated Ottoman Empire in the First World War 1914-1918. The League of Nations set up the Mandate with intention to take the people in this territory to independence. The UN in 1947 gave about 56% of Palestine to the Jewish people and 44% to the Arab people. When the Arab people rejected this UN settlement and Arab neighbors Jordan, Egypt and Syria invaded in 1947 about 70% of the territory went to the new state of Israel. There have been repeated conflicts almost every 7 years since and there are factions within Israel and inside Palestine Arabs who have protracted the dispute, including over holy sites in Jerusalem, without seeking the kind of settlement that won peace for Ireland after hundreds of years of British rule and discrimination. The world with its billions of people in China and India who seek development and billions of people in Africa and Latin America who seek a way out of poverty, has no interest in prolonging small conflicts that distract from the importance of tackling climate change, infrastructure development and education, healthcare, ...

Mr. Pascal Soriot of Astra Zeneca says his company has signed agreements for production of 2 billion doses of the coronavirus vaccine being developed by Oxford University. He says manufacturing is starting now because "we want it to be as fast as possible." One of the deals is with Serum Institute of India, the other is with Bill Gates of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for $750 million for CEPI and GAVI organizations which he supports. Mr. Soriot says the licensing agreement with Serum Institute is to supply one billion doses for low and middle income countries, with 400 million doses ready by end of 2020. He says Astra Zeneca is building supply chains across the world and so far has secured manufacturing capacity for 2 billion doses of the vaccine. Mr Soriot tells BBC that manufacturing vaccines on this scale is not an easy thing to do. He says that Astra Zeneca will not make a profit in production of these Oxford University developed vaccines. She struggled with depth perception and even had difficulty pouring orange juice into a glass. Over the years Hannah worked hard to compensate for this till she was asked to become England goalie only after England goalie Earp retired.

The Guardian gives this inspiring story about the England goalie who never gave up. Twice first in the game against Sweden and in the final against Spain she saved penalties. In the final she faced Spain's striker Bonmati and was able to make a save. It has not come easily but through it all Hampton has persevered till she wins European soccer title for England.

The redevelopment of the classic Egmore railway station in Chennai at a cost of 734 crores is set to take off.
