Russia begins evacuation of residents of Ukraine as the city becomes a war zone. The war on the Dnieper river in the south of Ukraine near the Black Sea enters a new phase as Ukraine seeks to preserve its coastline on the Black sea ports including Odessa. These ports are its lifeline to Western Europe and the world to ship its grain and food that supplies the Middle East and Africa. This makes it a vital connection for Turkey, Egypt and other parts of Africa that depend on Ukrainian food supplies. Any future peace agreement is likely to take into account this food connection. The other connection Ukraine seeks to preserve is its industrial region in the east in the area around Kharkiv.

Siemens and Alstom join together to compete effectively against China's CRRC in Asian markets. CRRC is itself the result of the merger of two large rail companies in China. China has about 12500 miles of high speed rail network, more than the rest of the world combined. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe of Japan is pushing for Japan's Shinkansen bullet trains, with billions of dollars in soft loans, including an effort to build the first high speed rail in India between Bombay and Ahmedabad.

Japan and the European companies have an edge when it comes to longer experience with high speed rail and better maintenance track record, to compete with CRRC's lower price tag.

When Airbus launched its superjumbo jet in 2000 with seating for 550 passengers large airports said they needed to upgrade facilities to meet the larger size. Technological advances and preference for smaller jets flying directly to many locations have doomed the Airbus A-380. Airbus announced it will stop making the A380 in 2021.

Technological advances since 2000 with lighter carbon fiber parts and super efficient engines make it possible to fly smaller jets directly to many airports reducing the need to use hubs. Airlines preferred these jets. Only Emirates flying out of Dubai which uses half of the A380 superjumbo jets has continued with the large aircraft which has 37 gates specially designed for 380 use.

In the U.S., Brazil, and now Mexico wearing masks during the coronavirus pandemic has become politicized. Here "Amlo" as president Lopez Obrador is popularly called says he will wear a mask once corruption is ended in Mexico and he does not need to talk about corruption. Amlo gives his own advice for fighting the pandemic- stop eating junk food or taking junk drinks, lose weight, and find spirituality, which is all good advice. President Trump recently wore a mask and called it "patriotic" to wear a mask taking some of the politics out of this simple and basic prevention action. The governor of Texas made it mandatory to wear a mask after initial hesitation.

Sinn Fein wins the largest share of votes in Ireland ahead of the two main parties Fianna Fail and Fine Gael. It wins about 25% of the vote but needs to form a coalition as it has contested only 42 seats. 80 seats are needed for a majority. Sinn Fein will make plans to stage a referendum on Irish reunification if it forms a government in coalition with other parties. This also complicates negotiating a trade deal for Britain's Boris Johnson after Brexit. Sinn Fein is likely to take a tougher line on the issue of divergence from EU regulations for the UK. All 27 states of the EU have to approve any deal negotiated by Mr. Johnson.

The huge investments that president Biden has made in America, including rebuilding aging infrastructure are part of the reason that the economy has been resilient with unemployment at about 3% and inflation coming down from 9% to 3%. In March 2022 leaders in finance such as Ray Dalio of Bridgewater Associates and Jamie Dimon of JP Morgan Chase were convinced that inflation would not come down and the economy would be in recession. Instead Fed's Jay Powell with repeated rate increases and Joe Biden by investing trillions of dollars in rebuilding infrastructure and creating new jobs and new factories have done what the leaders of American corporations were skeptical about, doubtful about whether this could be done.

From 2007 to 2022 Alberta contributed $180 billion more to federal government than it received. Alberta holds the fourth largest oil reserves in the world and contributes as much to the Canadian economy as the financial and manufacturing industries of Ontario. Because of the Liberals running federal policy away from fossil fuels no pipelines are being built for Albertan oil and Alberta is not getting the support it needs. Public opinion in Alberta is for joining the US (20%) or forming its own separate state (30%) because of a decade of Trudeau's Liberal policies. New PM Mark Carney is trying to move away from Liberal policies and find ways to meet the concerns of Albertans.

Daughter Amy was enrolled in a D.C. public school. He had his cousin Hugh Carter Jr pinch pennies by cutting out unnecessary costs in the West Wing. House Speaker Mike Johnson reminded the public of these virtues of simplicity and thrift. Jimmy Carter carried his own luggage into Air Force One. "Hail to the Chief" was not performed when he entered the room. The Nation appreciated this as is so evident in the final tribute and the heart felt gratitude of the people of America. One sees little division in the Nation when it comes to goodwill for Jimmy from Thune and Johnson in the US Congress whose tributes speak louder than the politics. Senator Thune should know, he grew up in a two room home in South Dakota and understands simplicity. What difference does it make if he is  a Republican or Carter a Southern Democrat. ...

The BBC looks at the divisions left behind by the Brexit campaigns and the healing needed for Britain to look to the future. Prime minister Boris Johnson has called for healing divisions. What is meant by "healing," and what is needed to do the healing. To understand this one needs to know why people feel strongly. One of the dangers in describing people, places and regions as "Leave" or "Remain" is that no place is entirely one or the other. Even in the most pro-Brexit places as Lincolnshire a quarter of people opted for Remain. In London called a "Remain" city more Londoners voted to leave the UK than voted for the Remain supporting Mayor. New polling done for the BBC gives one a better understanding of core beliefs. The phrase "influences from other countries and cultures makes Britain a better place to live" was preferred by Remain voters. The phrase "Britain will be stronger in the future if it sticks to its traditions and ways of life" was preferred by Leave voters. Leave people were more likely to celebrate Britain's history, heritage, Christian tradition and national identity. What the BBC points out is that the two ideas are not exclusive. This is also suggested in the percentage of Leave and Remain supporting their core beliefs, which hovers around 50 to 55%. Part of the problem is the way politics is organized to be for or against, part of it from echo chambers and living in relative isolation from people with other ideas, sort of in different bubbles. This means getting everyone out of their comfort zone to embrace what they have "More in Common." Organizations and institutions need to work to bridge divides not only in Britain, but also in the U.S. and Europe, with more people to people interface and more of the conversation shifting to beliefs held "More in Common." Wanting to value one's own culture and traditions and wanting to be part of the global conversation are not mutually exclusive ideas. This is the key point, and a balance has to be found between continuity and change, between respecting traditions and grappling with change, and most importantly listening to unheard or neglected voices.  ...

If John F. Kennedy were writing Profiles of Courage in 2024 he would have James Lankford as one of these Senators who showed courage to take the right stand in the face of opposition from his fellow Republican Congressmen and people in his state and the country who support loyalty to president Trump. Lankford says in this NYT interview that in December 2023 the immigration bill would have passed Congress into law. He has always seen that no one person is the boss. Trump is not the boss even as president. He is a co-equal branch, says Lankford. He sums it up saying- I work for the people of Oklahoma not the president.  Senator Lankford of Oklahoma is interviewed by Lulu Garcia Navarro of the NYT for his role in negotiating a immigration bill with Democrats in Congress and president Biden that would fix asylum policy and close the Border with Mexico. It is a tough bill says Lankford, and the Republicans held onto their position that there would be no citizenship for the immigrants who crossed the border illegally since 2024. If it came up in December 2023 it would have fixed the Border, says Lankford. It came up in February, and by this time the election nominee was Trump who decided not to support it, as it would take away the immigration issue that he hoped to run on against Democrats. It is still alive as Kamala Harris says it is her top priority to get the Lankford immigration bill passed into law. To know Lankford is to know that he ran the largest Baptist youth camp in the Nation at Fall Creek. He believes every person has value and worth and even if he disagreed with them that person has value and worth. His faith, he says, is something important for him, and not something you take off and put on.  The title should be The Men and Women who Solved Immigration for the Nation. This includes Republican Senator James Lankford of Oklahoma, Senator Krysten Sinema of Arizona, and Democrat Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut. Lankford for 22 years a youth Baptist minister from Oklahoma, Sinema immigration attorney from southern Arizona, and Murphy a lawyer from Connecticut. The man who selected Lankford to negotiate the immigration bill on behalf of the Republicans in Congress was Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky. For the Democratic party Pat Schumer helped bring Democrats in Congress and president Biden behind a tough bill that reflected the consensus view that something serious had to be done about the US Border for a lasting solution. This opportunity may come again if Kamala Harris wins as she says it will be her top priority to get the Lankford -Sinema Bill passed. ...

The Guardian points out that Macron is making a political choice rather than an economic imperative with making workers work longer for pensions during a cost of living crisis. France's pension advisory council says that the annual 10 billion to 12 billion euro deficit for pensions was manageable in the context of total expenditure of 340 billion euros. It also predicted agradual return to breaking even by the mid 2030's. As much as 80% of people under 65 oppose the reform says the Guardian. Macron has a minority government and won with support from working class parties led by  Melenchon, and is in his second term, so it is not clear anymore why he has pursued this course of action.

Volvo is the economic centre of western Sweden. It merged with Geely of China after Volvo executives met with Geely Auto Holding group executives. Ford Motor acquired Volvo in 1999 for $6.45 billion but failed to invest in the company. Geely has invested $10 billion since the merger with Volvo and Volvo sales have increased. Volvo was able to operate autonomously under both Ford and Geely. There is now considerable uncertainty about the future of Volvo and its autonomous operating status after deterioration in relations between Sweden and China. 

Sweden has seen acquisitions of technology companies in Sweden by China and there is concern in Sweden from the standpoint of national security. In this new context there is considerable uncertainty in Sweden about the future of Volvo.

They dropped neutrality to join NATO after Russian invasion of Ukraine. Sweden's defense industry, technological innovation, and "Total Defense" based participation of everyone 16-65 years old makes it unique in Europe. A new Defense Innovation Initiative aims to integrate civilian and military technologies even more. Unusual for a small Baltic nation Sweden makes the advanced Saab Gripen jet fighter, sophisticated submarines, and jet trainer aircraft used by US Air Force. It has no border with Russia. It faces the Baltic and Russia also faces the Baltic near St Petersburg.

For years the US shunned artisanal mining by small operators using children with no safety equipmentn for cobalt supplies. With China restricting the supply, the US AID agency has a $20 million program to integrate these small operators into the global supply chain. The US is coming to terms with the "inconvenient truth" that is there when it involves mining in the Congo for cobalt, a precious metal that is needed for renewable energy and lithium ion batteries in electric cars. Don't forget that 70% of the world's cobalt comes from the Congo and a third of this is dug up in small mines dug up in an in formal sector where children also work and there is no safety equipment.

Brexit Leave was only supported by a minority of Northern Ireland voters, only 44%. British prime minister May insists that the open borders established through the 1998 Good Friday Agreement will be maintained between Northern Ireland and Ireland. May met with Northern Ireland's leader, Martin McGuiness, following a meeting with Scotland's SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon, to assure other parts of the UK that opposed "Leave" that their views will be respected. May says the union is very important to her, and says about the  border- "We had a common travel area between the UK and the Republic of Ireland many years before either country was a member of the European Union. Nobody wants to return to the borders of the past."

Berlin's most famous hospital. Half of Germany's Nobel prize winners for medicine and physiology worked at Berlin Charite Hospital. It was setup in 1710, by 1810 it was a medical university, and today a leading world medical centre. Mr. Navalny is being treated here. It is also a centre in the fight against the pandemic.

Here DW.com gives pictures of the hospital over the 300 years of history. It was part of the controversial period in Germany in the thirties and was part of the GDR after 1945. The Republican party (GOP) chances with Trump as the candidate in 2024 are seen with much skepticism by Karl Rove in the WSJ. Republicans need to keep the presidential field of candidates not too crowded for too long, as pluralities in primaries led to Trump winning a large share of delegates even with about one third of the vote in the early primaries for the 2020 election. Another challenge is the work of Trump supporting leaders in states such as Michigan who want to select delegates by convention and not through primaries. Ron de Santis, Governor of Florida, is seeking the Republican nomination, and faces a strong challenge from the former president. De Santis, 44 years, is from Dunedin, Florida, His mother was a nurse and his father installed Nielsen TV rating boxes, with great-great grandparents immigrating from Italy Benevento, Avellino) in 1904. He studied history at Yale and went to Harvard Law School, Navy Justice School after joining the Navy. De Santis was elected to the US Congress in 2014 and 2016 where he served as the chariman of the sub committee on National Security. He founded the Freedom Caucus in these years. In 2018 he ran for Governor of Florida winning by 0.4%, running again in 2022 he won by about 20 percentage points. ...

Keir Starmer of Labour says he stands behind every word in the ad that shows Tories including Sunak are weak in prosecuting crimes against woman and children. Labour says it will halve violence against women and girls. Starmer says- he will "make absolutely zero apologies for being blunt." Starmer was head of public prosecution in Britain from 2008 to 2013. As early as 2002 he was Queen's Counsel. He was also a human rights adviser for Northern Ireland Policing Board and Association of Chief Police Officers. Starmer cites his work in improvements in Northern Ireland policing as one of the key factors in his decision to pursue a political career.
