In 2018 China, India, and America are Africa's largest trading partners. India is building 18 new embassies in African countries. Greater openness to trade and investment is leading to GDP growth in Africa, 40% higher than in 2000, which is still low by comparison with Asian countries. The Economist says African countries can benefit by drawing investment from all sides and all countries, so that Africa benefits the most. The U.S. and India see a surge in coronavirus cases. Per day cases surged to 40,000 on June 25 in U.S. and 17,000 in India. Alabama, Idaho, Nevada, Arizona, California, Florida are seeing a surge in new cases. Texas, California and Florida all recorded more than 5000 cases each. In California cases for hospitalization surged 32% with more than 4200 in hospitals.

India now has 490,000 cases with death toll of 15,301. Indian Railways cancelled all bookings. In the U.S. Texas is paused reopening plans.

One survey in 2021 shows that about 73% of workers in all age groups are feeling burnout since the pandemic started says this BBC report on Work Life. The situation is the worst for young workers in their twenties who have the least work capital and the most work. For these Generation Z workers the burnout rate is higher at 80%. This presents a huge problem for mental health. Across all age groups volume of work is up over 50% with the highest for young inexperienced workers who are pushed to the limit, working late hours and not able to say no. 

This situation shows that so much has happened during the pandemic that mental health is a major priority in 2022 and beyond.

Three events September 29 Sunday to October 5 Saturday described as "week from hell" for the Biden White House in this report. President Biden can feel a huge sigh of relief for having overcome in each event. The hurricane Helene devastating a swath of western North Carolina, parts of rural Georgia, and western Florida. The president was working round the clock for relief efforts and visiting the flooded regions. Then there was the large missile strike by Iran over Israel following its bombing of Lebanon. This was averted using US missile defense. And in the middle of all this there was the International Longshoreman's Union 45,000 members announcing a strike that  closed all ports on the East Coast from Maine to Texas. President Biden supported the dockworkers efforts to have shipping ports owners in Asia and Europe to share huge profits with dockworkers.  All the time the hard work at the White House and agencies for relief efforts paid off. Republican governors in North Carolina and Georgia praised the relief efforts. And Zient, Buttigieg, Transportation Secretary Brainard at NEC, were on the phone with port owners overseas at 5.30 am Thursday to setup a stopgap agreement till Jan 15 for settlement. The old online websites AOL and Yahoo are going through a transformation. Yahoo finalized an agreement to merge its web-search with Microsoft and much of their advertising busiesses. This leaves Yahoo with its popular finance, sports and news websites which are cheap to run as they are mostly aggregators of other websites' content with little that is Yahoo's own content. Yahoo's plan is to expand its audience , especially in develpoing countries where internet use is growing fast, and to package that audience in ways attractive to advertisers. In October 2009, according to comScore market research firm Yahoo had 158 millon visitors in America, and AOL had 98 millon. Yahoo! Mail has 106 million users monthly worldwide, AOL's email service has 336 million. The difference strategy pursued by Armstrong who is new CEO at AOL is to focus on creating new content. AOL is running about 80 websites covering everything from fashion (stylelist.com) and country music (theboot.com) to local news (patch.com). And has launched a website called seed.com to get people to contribute content. In this way it has about 3500 journalists on its payroll, some 500 of them work full-time. Armstrong thinks advertisers will pay a premium to appear next to this original niche site and home-made content. So far advertising has held up in this severe downturn, with online display advertising -the banners and boxes that show up on websites- at about $3.8 billion in the first half of 2009 in America, according to Interactive Advertising Bureau....

All sides joined the President at the White House, as part of his consensus building efforts, and to get aseat at the table in restructuring health care. The insurers and health care providers, including technology providers, all committed to cutting the cost of health care. New social insurance programs to cover 45 million uninsured Americans, and to make health care affordable for businesses and individuals, will be unworkable at currently projected rate of increase in health care costs of 6.2% a year for the next decade. The industry promised to reduce that by 1.5% through voluntary efforts, even though there is skepticism about whether they will deliver. The insurers are against a government sponsored health plan fearing it will drive them out of business. Insurers and health care providers are lobbying against the cuts in their Medicare payments, and insurers are fighting Obama's cuts to their private Medicare Advantage plans by a total of $176 billion over 10 years. Doctors are fighting a 21% cut in their Medicare fees scheduled to take place in January 2010. Pharmacuetical companies and makers of medical devices are concerned that new products will have to pass a cost-benefit test before being approved for coverage under Medicare. Its just that they all see the continued rise in costs as somehow unsustainable, especially in the current economic crisis, and share the feeling with business and the rest of the country that the system is broken. At the same time like the banks and bank executives, health care companies and their executives go on lobbying aggressively and doing things the old way, which raises questions about how well these systems that are broken can be put on the right path....

Indian Foreign Minister Jaishankar visits Ahmedabad for the introduction of the new Gujarati language edition of his book, The India Way- Strategies for an Uncertain World. At the meeting to take questions on the Gujarati edition at IIM Ahmedabad,  Jaishankar said India is now the fifth largest economy in the world. During the Nehru period it was the 20th largest economy in the world. It now has the capacity to take a leading part in world affairs. In a few years by 2030 India is expected to become the third largest economy in the world. And with its economy integrated into that of the US economy in a way that no other economy has been it will make the US-India economy by far the largest of any economic combination in the world. Because both are English speaking and both are modern democracies, and the traditions of Lincoln and Mohandas Gandhi, of St Paul and the Vedanta with Buddhism deeply rooted in each country. This is the true meaning of the Indo-Pacific. As Jaishankar pointed out in Ahmedabad there is no point in the water that says here is where the Pacific starts- that is the reality. Once you are in the Indian Ocean east of Africa you can travel on the ocean all the way past India to Indonesia, the Japanese Islands and the Hawaiian Islands till you reach the western shores of the United States. For India, the US and Australia, and Japan this is the ocean pathways that they are committed to keep open and with the international rule of law for all nations. In renewable energy, in climate change action, in managing soil and water, in agricultural innovation, and in technologies of all kinds India can now lead the way. Scientific curiosity, learning curve, manufacturing and innovation, education that brings new skills for a large workforce, India can tap into the resources of the world and make its own contributions to this resource for all mankind.  ...

People are saving more 8-12% of income. A lot of it invested in arget dated mutual funds. Yet older Americans, seniors are facing poverty- 15% in 2025 compared to 10.7% of older Americans living in poverty in 2021. cost of living has hit this group the hardest. Removing the tax on Social Security could be prescient, popular and fair for these Americans, as suggested by DJT. If invested well this $45 trillion could give the US leadership in investment for decades to come as it grows with good management of investments raising living standards and financing the Nation's rebuilding of infrastructure in all areas.
