One of the longest running conflicts in Europe comes to a close as the ETA separatist group in the Basque region of Spain says it is apologizing for the terrorism and plans its dissolution. The Basque region including cities of San Sebastian and Bilbao has 2.2 million people and its own distinct culture and language. a ceasefire was declared in 2010. This happens as another region in Spain Catalonia is seeking a peaceful separation from Spain. In Catalonia which includes the city of Barcelona the region is divided with about half the people supporting separation and half opposing it.

Colombia's 2018 presidential election has  a young right wing candidate Duque, 41 years who worked as economist at Inter American Development Bank and supports Alvaro Uribe, a strong critic of the 2016 peace agreement with guerillas that ended the drug and guerilla violence. On the other side is a former guerilla Mr. Petro, who was mayor of Bogota from 2012 to 2015. Petro says he supports rules of democracy. About 5000 refugees leave Venezuela each day, most of them coming to Columbia, according to the United Nations. This poses a major problem for the next government.

The Zero Energy Ready Home is now becoming a reality- what little energy they need can be derived from a roof full of soalr panels. Instead of conventional cooling and heating such homes use a heat pump, use enough insulation, and LED lighting. In 2020 California will require all new home to be Net Zero for energy use. The European Union also has set a goal of net zero for 2020 for all new home being built. In the U.S. only 8547 units of this type were built in 2017, with about 38,000 in construction.

Karrrenbauer is to the right of Merkel on social issues and to the left on economic matters. Prof. Sonalde Desai questions the lack of fresh thinking on addressing inequalities in India by sticking to reservations policy initiated in 1950 before modernization of the economy. In today's economy education is a critical component for upward mobility and the ability to read at higher level is critical. In India the forward castes do better in class 1 reading for 8-11 year olds with about 70% passing, for scheduled castes this drops to below 50%. May says Mr. Corbyn of the Labour Party, that he was not really interested in finding a solution, and has given only one hour for talks in five weeks. The Irish prime minister Varadkar says May has not offered any solutions for Brexit. May says she will give parliament the chance to vote  for an extension of the March 29 date under Article 50 or decide if it wants a no-deal Brexit.

Environmental issues for single use plastic are creating a comeback for glass in packaging. In 1975 over half of the packaging of drinks was in glass, then came plastic from zero to make up over 30%. Glassmakers are working to reduce the low recycling rates for glass containers, a major problem. Glass needs to be refilled to reduce its carbon footprint in transport of heavier material.  Aluminium also has a carbon footprint in that 6 times more energy is used in making aluminium than glass containers. To get glass back better recycling has to be implemented.

Drier weather is affecting wheat production in Europe, India, Brazil and other countries. This is happening as the war in Ukraine and blockade of Black sea ports such as Odessa is affecting supplies from Ukraine. A more than 5% fall in French wheat production is expected. France is the fifth largest producer of wheat after China, India, Russia, and the US. It is the 4th biggest wheat exporter. EU forecasts for wheat are for about 279 million metric tons in 2022-2023 growing season, down 4% because of dry weather. The UN Food and Agriculture Organization FAO says in its twice a year Global Food Report that global grain production including corn, wheat and other grains is expected at 2.78 billion metric tons in 2022 down almost 16 million metric tons from 2021. It is the first decline in 4 years and much of this is from the problems in Ukraine. India has banned wheat exports for food security reasons after the drier weather.  And Russian production of grains faces problems because paying for Russian grains is more complicated. ...

Over half of all Americans don't care about age, and many voters see it as benefitting the country because of the experience. In Biden's case the longest serving Senate record in the US means getting things done. It all depends on the choice voters have. With Trump 78 years old as Election Day approaches, and Biden 81 years, the difference between the two becomes slight- result a wash. If Mr. Trump brings it up as "sleepy Joe" as he did in 2020 it may sound as old hat. A polling research firm Navigator showed Mr. Biden to a group and found 35% approval on the grounds of age, after being shown the State of the Union address with a feisty Biden energized to take on the Republicans the approval jumped to 55% on age alone. Other experts point to the deciding factor being not age but accomplishment. It is true for all Democrats and for the significant voting group of Independents and Moderates. NYT looks at the preparation. Aides talk about a process in which the president spends weeks reading the drafts aloud, throwing out anything that is not readily understood. The president demands that the sentences be written clearly says the NYT, so that the whole country can grasp what he is saying. Mike Donilon, Bruce Reed, Anita Dunn, Steven Ricchetti, Vinay Reddy, are aides in this process. Reed guides policy related additions, and Donilon knows Biden's voice in returning to his humble roots. Reed ran Biden's office for 2 years to 2013, and Donilon shaped the message for the 2020 campaign- a fight for the soul of the nation. During crucial periods Washington, Lincoln and FDR's address to Congress shaped thinking in the US from the War of Independence, to the Civil War and the Great Depression, Biden's fight for the soul of the nation takes its place there. ...

It might come as a surprise to know as Roshan Kishore points out in this analysis in The Hindustan Times that the educational levels and incomes of Tory or Conservative voters in the UK are the opposite of what they used to be. The graphs shown here show that as education levels increases in different income segments there are significantly more Labour supporters than Conservative supporters. For Rishi Sunak this means he runs into the same problems that faced Johnson and Truss, of matching austerity cuts in spending that will be unpopular with the lower income support base with lower educational levels in the Tory party. His privileged background will only make the cuts in the middle of interest rate hikes and inflation appear as basically unfair to this support base. This is what Gerard Baker pointed out in the WSJ calling it an invitation for "abject chaos" that comes from Tories trying to represent working class families. Others in the The Guardian call it some form of myth that is far from reality with the myth and reality getting further and further apart. ...

Boris Johnson, UK prime minister, visits Mohandas Gandhi's Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad on his visit to India in April 2022. After returning from South Africa and following writing Hind Swaraj in 1910, Mohandas Gandhi set up the Ashram during the period after 1915 as the place where he lived and worked in organizing the struggle for Indian independence. This is where he started a campaign of spinning and weaving homespun cloth so that Indians would not buy British textiles in a form of non-cooperation with British rule. By 1930 this evolved into the Salt Satyagraha and noncooperation with British laws in making of salt. The British approved provincial assemblies as a limited self rule concept in 1936-37. In 1942 Mohandas Gandhi launched the Quit India movement leading to arrest and jail for Gandhi and his followers. After the war ended in 1945 Labour party's Clement Attlee was elected British prime minister. The India China border clashes in the Tawang area of Arunachal are covered in this discussion by experts in United States Institute of Peace. Global trade and the economic needs of China in relation to the US, and India's efforts to focus on modernization, common challenges of climate change and pandemics, are leading to a new dimension that is being recognized by all sides. Paul Krugman says in this column in the NYT that Biden's policies for trade reflect a stronger conviction for protecting American technologies and building its manufacturing base than previous administrations including the Trump administration. With less rhetoric and with quiet determination Biden has placed American domestic manufacturing as a requirement for renewable subsidies for new electric vehicles manufacturing and sale in the Inflation Reduction Act. In the Chips and Science Act Biden has placed US semiconductor technology promotion and manufacturing at the core of the Act. Krugman says this was the right thing for Biden to do. The renewable subsidy comes from ordinary Americans paying taxes who would benefit most from new jobs created in the electric vehicle industry. China has gained such a big lead in semiconductor chips manufacturing and materials by supporting its industry, that it is the right thing to do to give American manufacturers the same kind of support. Daniel Yergin, expert on international oil markets, says the oil price cap set by the US and EU at $60 and the European prohibition on Russian oil imports after Dec. 5, means the end of the global oil market. That global oil market came into place with the collapse of the Soviet Union and the industrialization of China. In its place comes a partitioned oil market shaped by not only economics and logistics but also by geopolitical strategy, says Yergin. This means Russia no longer sends 4 million barrels a day to Europe. The price cap is a US strategy to prevent a price surge with Russia cutting production to raise prices. It is working. with a slowing world economy, and shipping companies reluctant to take on unknown liabilities from government penalties, the price of Russian oil is now at mid $40's, about 45% below the benchmark price and 33% below the $70 price of oil on which the Russian budget is based, says this report. Climate Reset Berlin, a coalition of climate change action groups, has introduced a referendum that brings forward climate change action goals put off till 2045. The referendum makes 2030 the new target date for 95% reduction in carbon emissions consistent with the 2015 Paris Climate Change Agreement. Berlin is 80% dependent on fossil fuels for energy needs in 2023. Proponents say there is great potential for wind and solar energy. Opponents say that it is too costly and will take up funds now allocated for childcare and education. The outgoing Greens SPD government of Berlin opposes it, as does the new expected CDU government. The Green senator for Berlin supports it, as do other private groups. Buildings need to be renovated and private transport curbed which would cost billions of dollars. Opponents say this would bankrupt Berlin. Supporters say not enough is being done. If approved it goes into effect immediately. Supporters include the Sustainability Group at Humboldt University, Germany's national cyclists association. They say Berlin has 52 acres of available land in Brandenburg that could be used for wind energy. ...

Some changed to other schools where they fit in better, others struggled with large tuition bills when the same education could be obtained at state universities with lower tuition fees. It brings a sort of self-discipline at a crucial time for the Adani enterprises in coal, renewable energy, ports and logistics. By taking note of the criticisms where Adani enterprises can benefit from scaling down the level of debt it puts the company in a better situation for the future. After two decades of breakneck expansion it provides the kind of pause needed to rationalize the entire business operation and put it on a stronger basis. As Iyer points out the Adani and Ambani story in ports logistics and telecom show a delivery of results that few other companies were willing to do. It is this kind of endeavor that made it possible for China to build a large economy over two decades. This also requires companies to take stock of the situation and impose self discipline and the measure of their future success depends on how they meet situations such as these where they are being tested and weak areas that need attention become apparent. ...

With inflation at over 50%, Turkey seen as stalling strengthening of NATO by blocking Sweden's membership, the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and the earthquake leaving over 50,000 people dead in Turkey and the government seen as having allowed substandard construction in Turkey, there is a sense that Turkey is ready for a new government. Kilicdaroglu says he will restore the parliamentary system, and restore independence of the judiciary, central bank and foreign ministry if he wins.    ...
