In his sermon the new Pope says there are many settings where the Christian faith is vewed as "absurd" - with power, wealth, and technology dominating - but it was just this that shows missionary outreach is needed.

"A lack of faith is often tragically accompanied by the loss of meaning in life, the neglect of mercy, appalling violations of human dignity, the crisis of the family and so many other wounds that afflict our society," he said in the address delivered in Italian.

Brad Guzan, 40 years, reflects on age and playing soccer, as his crucial saves helps Atlanta beat Lionel Messi's team Miami in the first round of the MLS playoffs in 2024. Next he will face Orlando on Nov 24. He says "40 is the new 21." Guzan says age brings experience- “It’s not about feeling younger. It’s about using my experience. It’s about using moments that I’ve been in before in terms of games and situations I’ve faced, and within a millisecond trying to analyze the situation that I’m currently in, and how to use my experience to help me make a save in that moment.” Guzan's two seasons in 2021 and 2022 were not promising. He could not stop Messi in the 2016 Copa America which US lost to Argentina 4-0. He worked hard throughout till the results in stopping Inter Miami's Messi in three games this season. This editorial in the Hindu- after encouraging news from Moody's and the World Bank on India's economic future- says that the Modi government should not be distracted by the upcoming elections as it focusses on the task ahead. After a gap of 14 years Moody's raises India's credit rating one notch. Moody's cites steps taken by the Modi government as creating a better environment for future growth- the implementation of GST goods and service tax, efforts to clear some of the bad loans in the banking system so that capital can be freed up for infrastructure investment, and reducing bureaucratic hurdles for clearance of projects. Moody's cites the high public debt burden as a constraint for growth. General government debt is at 68% of GDP in 2016, higher than the 44% median for economies in this range. On the plus side the better targeting of welfare measures to help the poor including steps in the banking field, bringing more businesses into the formal sector to improve tax revenues, and the large pool of private savings, are cited by Moody's. Critical is timely implementation in the future. As the discussion in the media on bullet trains and other new infrastructure shows, there is not enough momentum for stretch goals as China has done over the last 2 decades.   ...

The legacy of U.S. president George H.W. Bush is a four year presidency that benefited from the growth under president Reagan and low inflation but was cut short in a loss to Bill Clinton in 1992, Persistent budget deficits and high unemployment were seen as a result of the supply side deficits Mr. Bush supported as vice president under Reagan, but derided as "voodoo economics" as president breaking his pledge of no new taxes to cut the deficit. The collapse of the savings and loan banks with poor lending happened during his administration, and was handled by Treasury officials including current Fed chairman Jerome Powell. Mr. Bush is chiefly remembered for his negotiating the issues leading to the fall of the Berlin Wall and reunification of Germany. His handling of the Iraq war left a unstable situation in Iraq that led to a major problem for his son George Bush who became president after Bill Clinton, leading to a second and protracted costly war in Iraq. The effects of that conflict led to the changes in the Republican Party with its new leader Mr. Trump and a U.S. non-interventionist policy in foreign conflicts. Greg Ip points to the defict reduction as a positive contribution under the elder Bush, yet much of these gains were wasted in the costly Iraq conflict with U.S. hasty intervention. ...

Chancellor Merkel of Germany proposed bilateral or trilateral deals between smaller groups of countries as a temporary solution till some agreement can be reached on immigration. She said "The European Council will not yet provide an overall solution to the migration problem." Hungary, Poland, Slovakia, Czech Republic which have opposed a quota system for asylum seekers did not attend.  Austria, Denmark, and Italy with the new government openly opposing immigration, attended the summit. Merkel said  a "lot of goodwill" was created, and leaders agreed that borders need to be better protected to prevent people from entering illegally, and reducing immigration at its source points in Africa. The migration problem has persisted as an issue long after the huge surge in immigration in 2015 has diminished to a trickle, and after chancellor Merkel has accomodated critics with new policies strictly limiting new immigration. New governments in Denmark, Austria and Italy, and the government in Hungary under Viktor Orban, have kept the issue alive by running on anti-immigration platforms. The European summit in 2018 was used by Merkel to reduce disagreement on this issue by allowing different countries to express their views and working in smaller groups for mutual benefit. It also reduces tension inside her CDP-CSU coalition after Bavaria based CSU decided to run in 2018 state elections on a platform calling for securing borders. ...

WSJ tells the story about Biden being slow to act in 2021 and 2022 to close the Southern Border, without telling the complete story and all the facts. Biden did close the Border in 2024 by executive order- when Trump blocked passage of Republican Lankford's legislation in Feb 2024 supported by Biden to close the southern Border. No mention is made that Biden was faced with a once in a century pandemic, winning the fight for vaccines over skepticism, and on Feb. 22 2022 Putin launching an attack on Kiev, Ukraine, and negotiating to get the crumbling infrastructure of the US rebuilt, funds for CHIPS and Science. On top of this the Venezuelan economy completely collapsed leading to an unanticipated migrant surge. Only FDR and Lincoln faced so many huge challenges and tackled them one by one. Without these facts the result can be to stall the biggest boom in manufacturing under president Biden/Harris that America has experienced since the space race in the 1960's. ...

Reno, Nevada, has  high unemployment and high housing costs. The shift of higher income people from California to Reno, and the building of a mega Tesla plant in the area have pushed up housing costs. The population of Reno in Washoe County increased by 25 percent or 100,000 since 2019. With casino hotels the employees incomes lag behind high grocery costs. Housing takes a larger share of the household budget so that many people are living on the edge. Refugees in Germany are 3.48 million in 2024 at 4 percent of the population, government data shows. This is 60,000 more than in 2023. One third of them are from Ukraine and many of them seek a return to their home country. Clara Bunger a member of the German parliament requested the information from the government. Bunger says- "It's in clear contradiction to the misleading portrayal of an alleged 'national emergency. Such scaremongering deliberately distracts from actual social problems and uses fear to make refugees a scapegoat." This distraction from the problems of cost of living is why immigration hurts workers and families, why PM Mette Frederiksen, Denmark, PM Michel Barnier, France, US president Biden/Harris who negotiated the legislation with Republicans in Congress to close the Border are taking this important step to refocus on the future of America and Europe, and the world at large. ...

What would a EU Britain relationship look like under Keir Starmer's Labour party? For education and student exchanges, for agriculture, and for defense? For Starmer why waste any capital when there is a need to deliver for working people and families in Britain, overcome the financial mess the Tories have left and still invest in Britain year after year, to permanently rest fears of the working class in Britain who left Labour.

A small test is happening over student exchanges as the EU's Leyen revives the plan for a 4 year college level student exchange. Here British universities say their finances cannot handle what the EU proposes that in the year spent overseas tution would be paid to the host country university. Another concern is that this is not seen as freedom of movement which the British public have not supported.

Alternative proposed is for a 2 year exchange that the EU has with Canada and Australia.

Bitcoin went past $100,000 after Black Rock and Fidelity Investments launched ETF funds based on Bitcoin. $TRUMP lost half its value when $MELANIA was launched, then recovered. It has high volatility and crypto is in the same position for Bitcoin, leading experts to say crypto itself has peaked. ...

On tariffs on Mexico, Canada and China, DJT tells members of Congress -"My goal is not to tax people, it is to change their behaviour." DJT in the second term will not wait for Congress to act- and intends to move quickly on Title 42, Countries on the banned list for immigration, Willing to test courts on ending birthright citizenship as a mistaken rendering of the 14th Amendment, on National Guard assistance to federal Border Patrol efforts at the Border, and on Tariffs on foreign goods. Much of this will be done by 100 Executive Orders even if it goes to the Courts. In the first term there were long delays as DJT waited for Congress to act. Underlying this action is a sense that the American people have shown support for needed action on illegal immigration surges and fentanyl flows that have not stopped over a decade when no strong action was taken by the American government, and foreign governments failed to take the necessary action. ...

Gerard Baker's column in The Times of London looks at the possibilities and the risks for the new DJT administration. This column look at the DJT pardon of violent activity offenders on Jan 6, and the use of the office of the president for financial gains through the issue of cultural meme crypto $Trump and $Melania. The challenge for the Nation says Baker is the precedent this sets. This also poses risks and Susie Wiles wisely keeps the narrative by controlling the Musk Risk Factor in the adjoining article from The Times of London.  The many sincere efforts for public service as shown in the Senate hearings for many of the nominees that received sometimes enthusiastic bipartisan support are put at risk by losing the narrative for cultural literacy and and building an economy that works for all the people under a new administration that will also continue policies for the infrastructure and manufacturing that were put forward in DJT 2016-2020 and pushed forward by Biden in 2020-2024. ...
