Posturing by the media and European governments on this issue has created this delusion that this is about US actions, when the US is only acting in the interests of all nations to keep the planet safer from dangerous nuclear proliferation in the region most torn by repeated wars in the last 50 years. Some of the language used about attacks on power plants has become a reason to justify such reporting to present aggressive ballistic missile development and nuclear weapons development in Iran in a benign way, becoming oblivious of how it affects the lives of billions of people around the world, as the Middle Eastern region a small fraction of the world's population (less than 7%) and a small fraction of the planet's surface (less than 6%) continues to operate in a way that is destructive for the lives of people around the world.   ...

With its volatile politics and no sense of direction Britain it says has lost its place in the world. During the Suez crisis Anthony Eden's efforts to restore Britain's position in Egypt was torn down by America. The U.S. pursues its own interests first- so much for the special relationship with America. It is only when the three pillars that sustained Britain operate together does Britain have a role- its relationship with America gives it a special place in the EU, and its relationship with the EU gives it a special place with America and acts as a counterbalance to Germany and France inside the EU. The third pillar is Britain's place with the emerging world which is supported by its being a member of the EU, a 500 million people market. The Economist counts as mere deceptions the idea that British industry is handicapped by being in the EU. It says the Mittelstand has done well with the EU market, so has British industry.     ...

Electric vehicles (EV's) get a tax credit under the Biden Climate Bill also called the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022. To qualify for the tax credit of upto $7500 buyers of EV's have to meet income and other requirements. Only cars with final assembly in the US qualify for the tax credit which should help boost American EV manufacturing capabilities and technology. This removes the problem of automobile job losses for factories shipped overseas.  EV's must not be priced above $25,000 for 2 year used cars, and $55,000 for new cars. SUV's can go upto $80,000. Income limits (as AGI) are $300,000 for joint filers, 150,000 for single filers for new cars. For old cars it is $150,000 for joint filers and $75,000 for single filers.

Both Ranbaxy and Dr.Reddy's, two of India's largest pharmaceutical companies, are bidding for Betapharm, Germany's fourth largest generic drugs maker. Ranbaxy's bid at 500 million euros was 50 million euros higher than Dr. Reddy's. Betapharm based in Augsburg, Germany, has sales of 161 million euros, and a workforce of 350. For Dr. Reddy's this is a way to get a foothold in a branded generic market in a developed country, says Dr. Reddy. This will be the largest foreign acquisition for an Indian pharmaceutical company.

The takeaway from Calgary to go big and go bold applies to American cities. Calgary's downtown like many downtowns in large cities in the US had about 30% vacant office space. The 2014 oil price crash had already hit the city before the pandemic hit. Calgary responded with a plan to convert 6 million square feet of vacant office space into apartments. Developers were to be given $75 per square foot as an incentive out of a $200 million fund setup by the city. This report in WSJ cites the PM's office saying a tax cut just when tourism revenue slowed with the start of the pandemic reduced Sri Lankan government annual revenues by 800 billion rupees. The combined impact of the tax cut with the pandemic relief measures and drop in tourism revenues widened the budget deficit from 9.6% of GDP to 12.2% of GDP in 2020. PM Wickremasinghe has increased VAT from 8% to 12% to generate 65 billion rupees. And an additional 52 billion rupees from increasing corporate tax from 24% to 30%. This exceptional report in the New York Times shows the results of a NYT investigation into Trump's taxes. Trump used a $916 million loss on his tax return for 1995. This was at a time when casino losses had mounted in Atlantic City and Trump was having financial difficulties. Trump used a tax avoidance maneuvre that was considered stretching the law by tax experts. Under tax law when debt is cancelled it has to be reported as taxable income. When Trump had some of this debt cancelled for his casinos, he would normally have had to show it as taxable income. He used a tax maneuvre to not show this taxable income- to be able to show a loss of the magnitude of $916 million for 1995 tax returns. The cancelled debt would make it possible to wipe out $50 million in taxable income for 18 years, says the NYT report. Trump used the losses of $916 million to offset other income from branding, television. Trump's debate comments to Hillary Clinton was why she had not closed the loopholes he had used. Hillary Clinton was one of the senators who had this loophole closed when legislation was passed in 2004. According to Mr. Buckley, the former chief of staff for Congress's Joint Committee on Taxation, this violated a key principle of American tax law, that you cannot deduct someone else's losses. Only the bondholders for the casinos who cancelled some of Trump's debt should be allowed to use these losses according to that principle. So Buckley says of Trump's tax return maneuvring- that "he was double dipping big time." What does it mean for the average citizen- it simply increases his tax burden. ...

China's farms are becoming larger as more farmers rent out their land and live on the resulting income. This shift is leading to the development of larger firms that use modern equipment requiring less labor. Typical is a farmer who decided to live in retirement after renting out his land for about $500, income on which he lives comfortably in a well manicured courtyard home in the village.  These farmers do not want to join their children who now live in the cities. As one farmer says "fallen leaves go back to their roots."  China's agriculture is not dominated by large commercial farms as it is in the U.S. This process is now beginning in China as more farmers prefer to rent out their land and live off the resulting income, resulting in larger farms and automated operations as in the U.S.  and Europe. Farmers now feel more confident about land rights to rent out their land. Earlier during the pandemic Macron on May 17 visited a battlefield in northern France for a battle in which De Gaulle took part. China is shifting to reduce losses in the region from loans. Over last 2 decades China has loaned Venezuela $100 billion in exchange for oil shipments. As its oil industry production declined without US assistance Venezuela went deeper in debt. This is another aspect of the problems that this type of model of development brings to finance building of rail and transport, seen across the world from Venezuela down to small countries like Sri Lanka and Zambia. For China this could amount to hundreds of billions of dollars in loans that lack transparency and are opaque to Africa and Latin America, when its construction industry debt and local government debt has led to problems. About 45% of investors have now expressed interest in doing the voting themselves. The voting provides Black Rock and other passive index tracking funds enormous leverage over thousands of American companies.

The Chengdu Iron and Steel factory was started in 1958 under Mao's effort at industrialization. The city depended on the huge steel complex for jobs as generation after generation worked at the same factory. The factory was closed in 2015. Mr. Deng is a laid off worker who gets $24,000 in buyout following 26 years at the plant, and 1500 yuan or about $235 month for 2 years of unemployment benefits with required retraining classes. Economic uncertainty is faced by many laid off workers, worrying about children's college education, spouses doing odd jobs, including a pedicab run by Mr. Deng's wife. About 2 million workers in China work in steel factories, with production having reached extremely high level of overcapacity of 800 million tons. With the plant gone, the local hospital Panchenggang District Hospital, is restructured and bought by a private company, 115 doctors and other staff are offered buyouts....
