Car repairs are a high tech business with special skills training for mechanics needed. Bloomberg philanthropies and Ford launch a $90 million training program for new mechanics. More such programs will be needed to drive down the costs of car repairs to bring down the cost of living.

This report in the WSJ points out that president Trump's planned withdrawal from Afghanistan to reduce the number of the 14000 troops there by half is an attempt by Mr. Trump to bring the number below the 8400 troops there that president Obama left there at the end of this term. In this way president Trump could show that he has not increased the presence there as he prepares for reelection, for a war that is not popular, and which Mr. Trump sees as a waste of national treasure. The U.S. had at one time 100,000 troops there. But at no time was the U.S. close to ending the war or the insurgency. Since 2014, 45,000 Afghan forces were killed in the war.

Putin is up for re-election in March 2018, after the elections in 2012 were marred by protests. Consumer demand is up and the main reason for sustained growth that is expected. This is a favorable environment for the election. Though incomes are hit, Putin remains a favored candidate by two thirds of voters, according to polling by Levada Center. The changes needed include moving up the retirement age from today's 55 years for women,and 60 for men.

This agreement with UK helps to protect $11 billion in UK pharma exports to the US. Starmer and Yvette Cooper plan action on speeding up 32,000 asylum cases which cost $5.4 billion in 6 months of 2025 for migrants and asylum hotels. Yet speeding up and creating alternative ways to cut asylum cases may not be enough to address the problem which at its root goes to the fact that the British system of justice was not designed to handle people of other countries freely entering the country on boats. Already the Times of London repoirts that there are 111,000 asylum cases up from 7000 in 2022 by June 2025.  A clear warning that Labour's entire program of action on housing, on immigration, on the economy and cost of living, can be derailed by not recognizing the fact that illegal migrants are simply making a travesty of the British system of justice which was not designed for people of other countries freely entering the country. The simple question is can thousands of illegal migrants be placed ahead of the interests of 60 million people of England, Wales and Scotland.  ...

Walmart plans to take a 75% stake in India's online retailer FlipKart for $15 billion. The move comes as Amazon is making an an effort to invest heavily in online sales in India. Amazon plans to invest $5 billion and is making strong gains in the growing Indian online market. This is expected to give Amazon about one third of its revenue growth in the next 3 years. The move by Walmart is seen as a defensive one against Amazon's efforts.

Walmart has 21 Best Price wholesale stores in India which it started in 2009. Foreign owned companies can only sell their own products under Indian rules and this makes it harder for Walmart. Online retailing is away to get around this restriction to sell many products and brands. India is growing in online retail with $35 billion estimated for 2019 by Forrester, this compares with $935 billion in China and $459 billion in the U.S.

Leading to its inability to make the investment needed and to the water quality issues in the Thames river. Thames Water is near financial collapse with parent company defaulting on its debt in April, according to the Guardian. The misallocation of funds under the Tories is a warning about what happens under Reagan/Friedman economic theory that has become part of the existing culture and damaged the economy in the US and Europe. These are what the King's Speech called "the scars of 14 years where politics (and economic theory) was put above the national interest, and decline deep in the marrow of our institutions." As climate changes the World Bank reports that 75% of India's urban populations, about 380 million people, work in jobs exposed to extreme heat, life threatening heat.This is the informal workforce that generates 50% of GDP, that works as street vendors, construction or factory workers, house help, auto rickshaw drivers, street cleaners, delivery people and guards. More people will be added- over 400 million by 2050 as India urbanizes further. The Guardian looks at the situation in Bengaluru that in year 2000 was still cool and leafy except for summer that was for for a few months March to May with temperatures peaking at 34 degrees centigrade. Now the summer heat happens earlier 34 degrees C. by February and 38 degrees C. by May. Then there is the heat island effect as the city  built from asphalt cement and metal heats up during the day and heats the atmosphere at night.
