Apple released a report on working conditions at factories used by suppliers in China. Of these factories 108 facilities did not pay overtime wages. In 93 of the facilities records show over half of the workers worked for more than 60 hours per week. In 5 facilities there was use of underage workers. 112 facilities were not following proper practice in storing, moving and handling of hazardous chemicals. Apple CEO Cook says he will need to monitor these factories very, very carefully.

The Wall Street Journal survey of housing market in the US finds prices declined in all 28 major metropolitan areas for the fourth quarter of 2010. And the size of the declines on a year-to-year basis were larger than the previous quarter. Inventory levels are also rising.

Leonhardt points out that public workers receive lower salaries and higher benefits than private workers. They are being paid in the wrong ways. For example with health insurance coverage that require little or no co-payment, which lead to overuse of healthcare services that don't necessarily improve health. Politicians and unions appear to have accepted this practice over the years. Public sector unions have blocked efforts to improve efficiency and find better ways of doing things from the classroom to work in government offices. Reforms in states such as Indiana have produced some results. But even these improvements do not address the magnitude of the problems facing the U.S. which stem from the public's desire to have it all- from large defense spending, public services, low taxes and no changes to Social Security and Medicare. Polls show Americans want to reduce deficit spending, but the same polls show Americans unwilling to make some difficult choices.

Commerce Department figures for May shows sales at retail establishments fell 1.2% in May 2010 from April 2010. The decline induced by drop in autos and building materials was the first decline since September 2009's 2.2% drop.

If not passed by Congress, the extension of unemployment benefits expires by July 4, 2010. This would leave an estimated 1.6 million people without the average check of $309 a week. Columbia University Professor and Nobel Prize winner, Edmund Phelps, gives suggestions for reviving the economy. He sees structural problems in the economy and recommends more inclusion. Higher employment, he says, will require a higher level of investment activity, higher business investment and new technology and products. Inclusion will require more attention to jobs gained at all levels. He suggests a program similiar to Singapore's, with a program of tax credits for companies employing low-wage workers.

The vote to keep Britain united affirms that there is room for different stories under one nation state. Devolution it says can bring power closer to the local regions, and can be a good thing. The challenge is for the British government to come up with a workable arrangement for devolution of powers. The world needs a united Britain.
