The U.S. economy moved ahead at 4% growth in GDP for the second quarter 2014. The qualifier is that of this 1.66 percentage points was for increasing inventories, so that GDP growth excluding this was 2.3%. Still a large improvement over the negative 0.9% GDP growth in the 1st quarter of 2014. Personal consumption expenditures growth was broadly even between clothing, housing and cars, contributing most of the 2.3% growth. Imports outpaced exports. Business and housing investment was modest for a small part of this 2.3%. Expansion of state and local government spending made up for decline in federal spending.

Joe Kaeser, CEO of Siemens AG, meets Russian president Putin in Moscow on March 26, 2014. He also had talks with Gazprom chief, Alexei Miller. Siemen's has invested 800 million dollars in Russia in the last 2 years. Siemens sales in Russia are 2.17 billion euros, 2.9% of the company's revenue. Germany's total trade with Russia is 56.3 billion euros for 2012. Eckhard Cordes, chairman of German industry group Ostausschuss, representing German companies with investments in Eastern Europe, met with Russian officials and Alexei Mordashov, CEO of Severstal metals group. He then briefed the German government on his talks. Chancellor Merkel says dialogue is also part of government policy: "Business contacts are still taking place and I am not interested in seeing the situation escalate, but rather am working towards a de-escalation." Exxon has major investments in Russia and deals with Russian oil companies and the Russian government for oil exploration. Exxon CEO Tillerson has taken a similiar approach....

Financing for Shanghui's acqusition of Smithfield Foods comes from Morgan Stanley, which will provide $3 billion. Morgan Stanley is the advisor on the deal and plans to sell debt to other banks, including Chinese banks. Shanghui has as its largest shareholder a number of Chinese private equity firms grouped together under CDH Investments, with 33.7% stake. This includes New Horizon Capital, co-founded by the son of China's former premier Wen Jiabao. Temasek Holdings of Singapore and Goldman Sachs private equity unit have ownership stakes. According to its website managers and some employees own 30% of the company. Shanghui sales were $6.2 billion in 2012, increasing from $5.5 billion in 2011, and has 60,000 employees. The sales are much smaller than Smithfield Foods but Shanghui has a much larger valuation.
