Executive orders ending automatic birthright citizenship and DEI programs.  Automatic birthright citizenship is not in the Constitution signed on Sept 17 1787, and ratified by the states by June 1788. What was added in the 14th Amendment of 1868 was intended solely to give black people freed from slavery after the Civil War the rights of citizenship. It had nothing to do with millions of people illegally crossing American borders from foreign countries or people coming to the US to gain citizenship by giving birth here. The US vs Wong decision of 1898 came 6 years after the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1892 giving Wong Kim a Chinese born in the US in 1873 rights as a citizen. CDU's Merz and the SPD join with Greens to provide the two thirds majority to remove a constitutional debt brake put in in the Merkel years. Germany's dilapidated infrastructure from rail to other transport and public facilities, to poor childcare are a sign of how the Merkel debt brake has hurt the German economy. The results can be seen in Frankfurt and other cities and in the underinvestment in Deutsche Bahn rail and all over the country. ProPublica Report that shows taxes paid by Warren Buffett of Berkshire, Jeff Bezos of Amazon, Michael Bloomberg of Bloomberg, Soros of financial business, and Elon Musk of Tesla. This report put out by Americans for Tax Fairness shows tax rates of a group of 25 such business persons at 3.4% on wealth growth between 2014-2018 of $401 billion. This is not to say that Democrats or Republicans can be elected to solve this, which is basically a problem not of fairness but of how it enables underfunding of America's basic infrastructure of health, education, transportation, and public services such as parks, clean air, and renewable energy, energy grids, water supplies, heating infrastructure, on and on on the list. Why because the difference between a modern industrial base country and a backward, lack of industrial base country is just this list. When the companies also unfund maufacturing in the US as Apple does by making almost  all products overseas it means lossof manufacturing knowhow and loss of leadership of the free world which simply means chaos without America's leadership based on its founder's values.   ...

The challenges of immigration with legal vs illegal entry into the US is a topic in some media reporting as the US seeks to do what the US did to tackle out of control illegal migration in 1954 under president Eisenhower. This one from the NYT happens in a small town in Missouri in a pancake and waffle restaurant. Earlier reports in the WSJ showed in 2024 the way Republican areas in small towns in Kansas were making an effort to attract immigrants to meet the need for people in manpower depleted public services. The basic idea of legal vs illegal and all the consequences on a national scale in the US and in Europe when illegal migrations gets out of control and creates divided communities, and strain on public funds and resources, is one that has been seen for over a decade. In Missouri, in a largely Republican town in the US the friendly nature of American public to immigrants is seen in the way the local community cared for and had genuine respect for the worker at the restaurant. Yet there is also the sense among members of this small community that US law should be respected.   ...

Thomas Grove of the WSJ describes the underground defense system prepared by the government in Helsinki, Finland, in the event of an advance into Finnish territory by Russia. Russia is holding a large military exercize at the Finnish border called Zapad 2017. All 600,000 residents of Helsinki can go underground and the country can function in the event of a Russian advance. Finland faced a Russian advance for 3 months in 1940, leading to a loss of 10% of territory but leaving the government and country intact. Lessons from this experience are kept alive today. Finland is also working closely with NATO of which it is not a member. NATO is also expanding its presence in the Baltic region.

The business headed by Armstrong at AOL was combined with Yahoo properties and called Verizon Media Group which failed to meet revenue projections. Verizon spent $9 billion from 2015-2017 to buy AOL and Yahoo, in an investment that has half its value written off.

The new airport is expected to provide an improvement in travel.

Lisbon tram from an earlier era when it was electrified in 1915, falls apart in 2025. Reports say a cable broke and the brakes failed. It is a funicular tram that goes down 850 feet a steep hill and connects downtown to the Bairro Alto neighborhood. Many comments refer to overcrowding of this tram and the trams being used as part of the city's public transit system. Much of the older infrastructure in Europe needs updating.

A senior Indian diplomat, and former ambassador to China, Gautam Bambawale, says China's action in the June 15 clash at Galwan Valley was the worst violence since 1967. He sees it as a premeditated and well thought out action. His view is that India's relations with China will deteriorate further. That this was an action by the PLA to take territory to what it sees as the LAC or border. For small tactical gains he says "China has strategically lost India." This will impact trade and other relations going forward in his view.  Nothing of this sort was expected says Bambawale. All the agreements put in place since 1993, everything for tranquillity at the border, all the mechanisms, have now collapsed. Bambawale has provided a very lucid and clear account of the relations and the border issues. He goes on to say that Chinese observers have given reasons for the Galwan clash with PLA- that India should stay away from the US and other democracies such as the European Union. Some reflection shows that the opposite has happened. And further reflection would show that the same situation was repeated in the period of transfer from British Empire to Republican India, and from Nationalist China to Communist China from the period 1947 onwards. Different perceptions and different leaderships that gave the perception of gaps between the two countries. In the 1950's after the Korean War Chinese perceptions about India could have led to the incursions that brought China to the borders of India in 1950, similar perceptions of gaps in development and capabilities could have led to the conflict in 1962. From 1993 peace prevailed with India after China entered the World Trade Organization under president Clinton in 2001 following a 10 year effort. Because the focus in China was on development after a series of crises, internal sense of a widening technological gap with the US and Europe, disagreements with the Soviet Union, and the experiments with market economy, internal struggles for democracy. With that period coming to a close as the new trading relationship has led to working class losses in factory jobs in the US, China is faced with protecting its economy as it and the US look at changing supply channels and how it affects both countries. It is a critical time for China as it faces governments in US, France, UK and Canada determined to protect their own interests in manufacturing jobs, renewing supply channels, and in technological advancement. The response is similar to that in 1962 when seen from the Communist party perspective as a gap has opened up with India following China's progress in the 30 year trading relationship with the US and Europe. That gap and the difficult situation China faces today with the US and EU in trade and technology has brought forward the Galwan clash and future clashes in Ladakh and at the border.  As Mr. Jaishnkar, India's Minister of External Affairs as well as former ambassador to China,  has pointed out this is a very different aspirational India that China faces. The same kind of grassroots development that happened in China and rapid pooling of capital, human resources and technology inputs for development is taking place in India, and will continue for the next two decades, quickly bridging any gaps in modernization between the two countries. The difference between a youthful population in India and aging population in China and Japan, is likely to add another dimension. China's Buddhist culture that came from India is not likely to go away, more likely is that China will see a revival of Buddhist ideas of wellness and living more as culture than religion. The experience with British colonialism that prevailed both in India and China, and which from its base in India caused so much grief to China during the Opium wars will recede from memory. Extending borders from historical memory of Japanese incursions into border areas in Manchuria could have led leaders after 1950 in China to extend borders to remote areas in the Arunachal region of India and communist theory books may have created the perception of defensive moves. In the context of an aspirational India similar to China, and no real intention on the part of India to extend itself in any way to China's provinces in Sichuan, this extending of borders as a defensive move will be seen as stemming from memories of Japanese incursions in the 1930's, but simply costly and not relevant in any way to China's own aspirational development and progress. ...

WSJ describes the close friendship since 1994 between Dana Waldman, head of Disney, and Kamala Harris. It does not mention that Dana Walden is the granddaughter of Rose Freeman, a Jewish immigrant from Austria that is shown to be a survivor of a garment sweatshop the Triangle Blouse Factory Fire in 1911. This fire started America's labor reforms under France Perkins for safety, hours of work limited to 54  by NY law with help of Teddy Roosevelt Republican president, and New York Governors Al Smith, Franklin Roosevelt.  It also does not mention that Frances Perkins is the first woman to be appointed to the cabinet- as Labour Secretary by FDR in 1933. Frances Perkins told Roosevelt at that meeting in 1933 about her fight for labor reform for Social Security and Unemployment Insurance- "All this is really new. You know that don't you." Today Social Security and Unemployment Insurance is a bedrock for families- Republican or Democrat. People forget that Teddy Roosevelt and FDR were a Republican and a Democrat- yet both were on the side of decent conditions for workers and children, and families. Matt Walden and Doug Emhoff in the California entertainment industry knew each other years before Dana Walden, Matt Walden's wife and co-head of Disney Entertainment introduced Doug Emhoff to Kamala Harris in 1994 on a blind date. At the time Harris was District Attorney of Alameda County. Dana and Kamala became close friends. ...
