Critics say China's currency is undervalued by 20%. China is only willing to increase the value of the yuan by 3% this year, fearing that a signifcant revaluation will lead to the closure of textile and other factories in the coastal areas that operate on a small profit. Facing high unemployment the US is not willing to let this happen gradually. US businesses that manufacture in the US and export to China would benefit if the yuan appreciates significantly. Retailers such as Wal-Mart and textile producers with offshore manufacturing at contract sites in China are on the other side as they benefit from the lower value of the Chinese currency.

A bill in the U.S. Senate in October 2011, which has bipartisan support, would push for China to correct an unfair trade advantage from keeping the value of the yuan low. The bill requires retaliatory tariffs for countries that have "misaligned" currency. This makes it possible for the U.S. Treasury Department to take action even if it finds no currency manipulation by China. This is a new approach as the U.S. Congress struggles to restore a level playing field in international trade.

This is important to grasp if one wants to understand China. Much of the media focuses on this or that smaller aspect of the DJT visit to China, including the NYT when it shows DJT invited to a walk on the garden grounds of the Zhonghanhai Compound. It does not accept that president Xi Jinping finds little that is relevant to China today and its aspirations in places like Iran and the Middle East. That Xi admires the US efforts for reindustrialization and renewal in the same way he sees the rejuvenation and renewal of the great Chinese Nation and sees this as shared goals for betterment of their people's lives.  ...

Of the nine positions on China's Politburo Standing Committee, which effectively runs the country, only Xi Jinping and Li Keqiang will remain as China moves to a transition in leadership. There is considerable uncertainty about the direction in which Xi Jinping and Li Keqiang will take the country- whether continuing the status quo or making efforts to introduce democratic processes in the country and shift away from the export model for the economy.

Nine months of parental leave and government effort briefly boosted the birthrate in Sweden to above 1.6 and above the replacement rate, then by the 1990's it went below the replacement rate. Sweden now has parental leave at 16 months and extraordinary benefits for mothers and parents. This shows that once the birthrate drops below the replacement rate it stays below the replacement rate even after extraordinary government effort. This is true for Australia and other countries in Europe.
