Other people have dropped out of the workforce because schools have not reopened and there is a lack of good affordable childcare. The chairman of the US central bank Jerome Powell, says "It is frustrating to acknowledge that people getting vaccinated and getting Delta variant under control remains the most important economic policy we have. It is also frustrating to se the bottlenecks and supply chain problems not getting better- in fact at the margin getting a bit worse." ...

The neglect of British Council is happening at the same time that Germany is rejuvenating the Goethe Institut with new leadership and making it an instrument of cultural and educational exchange with Africa, Asia, and Latin America. This needs to happen with the British Council. People in these countries look for cultural and educational exchange with Europe and America through these institutions of culture and education. The libraries of these institutions perform an invaluable role. Long forgotten is the role these institutions including the US Information Service played in Asia, Africa and Latin America in the period after World War II, long before Misha Glenny's time. There is eagerness, even a hunger to learn about other countries in the young minds of Asia, Africa and Latin America, and this makes for a two way exchange that helps Europe and America learn about these countries- the way the Goethe Insitut is now setting as a new model for the future.      ...

Hancock Prospecting in Australia, Albemarle in Charlotte, NC, SQM in Chile, and China's Ganfeng are competing for stakes in lithium mines.

A 900 mile long frontline from Kherson on the Black Sea north to Luhansk stretches Ukraine's forces along a long line in June 2023. A Ukraine effort to retake areas lost to Russia in eastern Ukraine and near Crimea as part of the counter offensive is only making slow progress because of land mines and lack of airpower. The successful Ukraine effort in 2022 to retake Kherson happened in an area which had two rivers and where Russia faced logistical issues of supplying its troops. In 2023 both sides have prepared for some time and it is very difficult for both.

Millenials families with children occupy only 14% of homes with 3+ bedrooms. Boomers don't want to give up their lower rate mortgages. They own about 50% of $32 trillion home equity in the US. The result is to make housing supply for families with children tighter than it would otherwise have been.

Studies in college in diverse disciplines gives a broader outlook and is useful for resilient careers. 1.4 million students were studied for 2009-2019 in the US showing that a wider funnel means broader opportunities. A diverse set of skills helps find more stable jobs. The most resilient were people who studied different disciplines say economics and biology. This kind of diverse knowledge also brings better capabilities to solve problems and find solutions in a creative way. This means companies with people having diverse skills will also do better in the long run.
