Spirit Airlines strategy to charge for almost everything from snacks to bags, reservations on the phone and other items for a flight- making it a bare bones flight like that of European budget carrier Ryanair- has proven very successful. Spirit's net profit per plane is now the highest by far in the U.S. airline industry. Spirit leads with $2.06 million profit per plane, followed by Delta at $1.21, United $1.19, JetBlue $0.51, Southwest $0.32, US Airways $0.21, and American at a negative $2.32 million, according to Ascend and FactSet Research. Spirit has stayed away from business fliers, instead pursuing the frugal flyer, other than the seat everything has a price. Boarding passes cost $5, water $3. Spirit started the trend to charge for bags. Southwest has moved away from the no frills arrangement and Spirit is gutsily moving that way. Carryons in the overhead bin run $30-$45. Compared to other airlines which get only 6% of revenues from add on charges, Spirit gets about 50%. Since 1989 Spirit earned $289 million, compared to $1 billion for way larger Southwest. Bill Franke, a former CEO of America West Airlines in 1990's, bought Spirit with the idea of modeling it on Ryanair in Europe, after Spirit could not turn a profit flying Midwest passengers to Florida. He teamed up with CEO Baldanza to run the operation on a hands on basis with only 1% going for advertising, and Franke doing some of the ads in emails. Running flight on a tight schedule means late flights and with tight seating and strict refund policies, Spirit has many complaints. It has the worst on time performance in the industry. Yet it has planes running close to capacity in today's frugal customer environment. Prices are about 30% lower than competitors according to industry analysts. Franke and Baldanza seem to revel in this, sensing that they have struck the right tone for a frugal flier, and outdone cost pioneer Southwest. ...

Wal-Mart is expected to announce a five year plan to meet specific targets for lowering sodium, trans fats and aded sugars in a whole range of foods- including rice, soups, canned beans, salad dressings and snacks foods- in packaged foods sold under its house brand, Great Value. Other moves towards healthy foods are to move to eliminate the extra cost to consumers for healthy foods made with whole grains. It will also lower prices on fresh fruits and vegetables. This plan is similiar to other plans announced by companies such as Con Agra Foods which set a target of reducing sodium content in foods by 20% by 2015. New York City also has a public health initiative for healthy foods. another move by Wal-Mart is to get major food suppliers like Kraft, to follow the example set by Wal-Mart. Kraft sells 16% of its global sales through Wal-Mart. The move will be gradually introduced over five years which makes for slow progress, and the targets set for sugar reductions are much less than they should be, says Michael Jacobson, executive director of Center for Science in the Public Interest. Another serious drawback is that Wal-mart has not proposed to tackle the major cause of childhood obesity, which is the added sugars in soft drinks....

By contrast Trump says he will do nothing for supply or prices. For rental prices of apartments and homes Harris calls for limiting price increases to 5% for apartment property owners for federal benefits to be continued. A German company BioNTech founded by Dr. Sahin, a son of Turkish immigrants, is based in Mainz. Dr. Sahin says it will be ready with a vaccine by December 2020 when it will seek regulatory approval. Peter Fisher spent 15 years at the New York Fed and was Under Secretary of the Treasury for domestic finance. Interviewed by Maria Bartiromo he says the fourth quarter is going to be very hard and its going to take several quarters to get some stability and freeing up credit markets. Why did this happen. We had says Peter Fisher several years of negative interest rates the middle of this decade, and its this essentially free money that distorted the system. Capitalism he says is premised on the idea that capital is a scarce commodity rationed with a price mechanism. And everybody took advantage of this to leverage themselves too far from the clever guys on Wall Street to people in the housing and financial services industries. This in his view was the engine that led the economy so far astray. Fisher does not believe all financial institutions should be treated by fed and treasury the same way. The ones that overly leveraged with weak managements and are doing poorly ad not likely to survive should be closed. Once it is clear that the prospects for some financial institutions are dim and their survival is uncertain he thinks Fed and Treasury should not wait around for consolidation but close these as quickly as possible. He sees some banks being closed and not just commercial banks. ...

This policy is now seen as posing serious risks for Germany now that lessons are being learned from the failure of the overconcentration of investment and dependence on fossil fuel supplies from Russia, a policy pursued by Merkel. It was  the deputy chancellor Habeck as Energy Minister who did the remarkable job of getting new supplies from other countries to replace Russian oil and gas. This made it possible for Germany to make it through the winter without supplies from Russia. Germany is now shifting away from this overconcentration in its supply chain in the new security strategy. This may only be the beginning of a larger change in Germany's policies.

For too long the press has looked at president Biden's age as drawback ignoring his vast experience, and not Trump's only 3 years younger with poor food and exercise habits and overweight, as pointed out by Duke University Prof. Frank Bruni in the NYT. Here the WSJ at last shows that half of Americans born in 1942 are alive, with many of them about 650,000 working, 18% more than a decade earlier, according to Census Bureau. The saying is that 80 years is the new 60, because of advances in medicine, given healthy habits and exercise.

Investors in China fear that the overheated economy and property bubbles, may see a sharp turn with excessive tightening of monetary policy. China rebounded quickly after the 2008 crisis, but did this with a huge stimulus and by encouraging excessive lending levels. Some of this local government lending is suspected to have gone into low quality projects with the danger of bad loans. Inflation was 2.8% in April, and as lending tightens the Shanghai Composite Index has fallen 16% in the last month. The crisis in Europe, the extremely short 2-3 month horizon of mainland Chinese investors, the excessive supply of shares- attempts to raise $74 billion in share issuance in mainland and Hong Kong markets and an IPO of $30 billion for Agricultural Bank of China- all put pressure on stocks. OECD index of leading indicators for March 2010 show a drop from February, and the Chinese economy grew 11.9% in the first quarter 2010.

Lunch is green salad with avocado. Dinner may be rice with shrimp and vegetables. Experts say training programs are highly individualistic. A fit person takes about 3 months to be ready for marathon running. Long runs are crucial. A 12-18 hour rest period after a marathon is suggested to allow tissue healing.
