Huruhiko Kuroda, the new Governor of the Bank of Japan, Japan's central bank, told parliament in confirmation hearings: "If I am confirmed as governor, I will clearly communicate to markets that I am prepared to do whatever it takes to beat deflation... The Japanese economy has suffered from deflation, for over 10, almost 15 years, which is a global anomaly of the most extreme. As prices have fallen, corporate profits and wages have shrunk, depressing consumption and investment and triggering even lower prices in a vicious cycle." Kuroda also emphasized that the weakening of the yen was a side effect not the goal itself- "There is evidence that currencies tend to fall for countries that ease monetary policy on a large scale, but the BOJ's policy is not targeting currencies... The important thing is to ensure price stability and achieve the 2 percent price stability goal, although it could affect currencies in that process."

A Pakistani court finds former prime minister Nawaz Sharif guilty of corruption. Sharif is sentenced for 10 years in prison and his daughter Maryam Sharif to 7 years. The corruption case is based on 4 apartments in central London which prosecution claims were bought with money from kickbacks during Sharif's period as prime minister in the 1990's, and later passed on to his sons and daughter. A unanimous vote of the Chinese Communist Party Congress now puts "Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics in a New Era" into the Chinese Constitution. As the 19th Party Congress ends Xi Jinping joins two other leaders of the Communist Party Mao  Zedong and Deng Xiaoping, who were so honored. It also appears that unlike previous leaders Jiang Zemin and Hu Jintao, Xi Jinping is concentrating authority and direction for China. This Congress marks the end of Xi's second five year term as party general secretary.  Under Hu Jintao there were efforts by some Communist leaders to create new power bases. This period ended with Xi Jinping bringing a clear direction and authority under the Communist Party. This has led to China taking on a leadership role in the world economy and global political affairs after the election of Trump in the U.S. in 2017. U.S consumer spending declines by 0.9% in Dec. 2014 over the prior month, according to the Commerce Department. Consumer spending was up in Nov. 2014 by 0.4%. Excluding auto sales and falling gas prices the Dec. 2014 decline in consumer spending was 0.3%. This shows that consumers are saving most of the money saved as a result of gasoline at about $2 a gallon, or using it to pay off debt. Analysts had estimated a significant increase in retail spending which turned out not to be happening.

An official report after a 7 year survey finds 19.4% of arable land in China is polluted. The pollution comes for the most part from inorganic materials such as heavy metals cadmium, nickel which are byproducts of mining. Pollution is severe in the Pearl River Delta in the south, in Yangtze River Delta in the east, and in older industrial zones in the north east. Earlier efforts to get this data were stymied by some officials calling it a state secret about the time of the discovery of cadmium contaminated rice in Hunan province. China's 334 million acres of arable land, according to the most recent land survey at the end of 2012, is only 37 million acres above the minimum considered necessary to feed the large population, making this a major issue for China.
