His initial idea was rejected by his bosses at Xerox so he got a transfer to the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center where he worked on developing the first laser printer and then better laser printers. His views were that it was not a good thing having people pressured working from the 40 hour week to the sixty hour week. Seen from this perspective what is seen as a calamity for men is also not happening in a way that is providing visible advantage for women. Women stayed home more than men during the pandemic and were more likely to quit work during the coronavirus pandemic to take care of children when schools were closed. This was happening not just in the US, but also in Europe. The result is that both men and women have suffered setbacks during the pandemic. The difference is that Eisenhower was widely respected in both parties and had fought the war against Germany and Japan alongside Gen.George Marshall under president Harry Truman. His name was put on the ballot in New Hampshire but he himself preferred not to run or run as an Independent according to JFK. The Eastern Establishment including Governor Dewey of NY pushed for Eisenhower while the Midwestern States more isolationist in their approach supported Robert Taft. Eisenhower also did not choose Senator Nixon and he was chosen to win support in California and as a compromise with the Taft group. Eisenhower did not at any time approve of the reckless criticism tactics of McCarthy, though he remained silent on the issue not wanting to distract from the need to find a new approach to ending the war in Korea and with the Soviets than the one offered by Truman. Strong hiring and consumer spending is propelling the US economy forward in 2024. With 4th quarter growth at 3.3% the year 2023 ended with the US economy growth at 3.1% for the year. Contrast that with economists projecting 0.2% growth in 2023 in 2022. In 2022 the growth was 0.7%. It uses low carbon concrete, wood structures and geothermal heating to cut carbon emissions in half compared to conventional methods. It is located by the river Seine in a regeneration effort in the economically deprived suburb of Seine-St-Dennis. The suburb also holds the national stadium and is the poorest and most crime ridden of France.

Democrats and Republicans in the Senate are pushing forward a bill that would treat Google search engine like a railroad operator making it illegal for it to give an unfair advantage to Google products and charge inflated prices by distorting the markets. This report in WSJ shows the way Google ran a series of programs named Project Bernanke, Reserve Price Optimization and Dynamic Revenue Share, to distort the normal operation of markets so that Google obtained an unfair price advantage. Bernanke program was operated between 2010 and 2019. In some cases the lawsuit says publisher revenue was reduced by 40%, according to internal company communications quoted in the complaint, as shown in this WSJ report. ...

Coronavirus testing is being ramped up in the U.S. as the Food and Drug Administration new regulations allow commercial labs to manufacture and distribute  coronavirus tests. Now many players can now acquire and conduct tests including state and local governments, hospitals, universities, and private companies. so that tracking nationwide distribution is still difficult. In this economy there is wide divergence in the US for upper income people earning well on assets they own at 5%+ for extra income and the lower middle classes wage earners that are struggling even with low unemployment and inflation at 3%. WSJ looks at these two divergent parts of the US economy and what can be done. Inflation could be worse with higher Trump tariffs on imports, says WSJ. The situation is a difficult one for families struggling even with higher incomes, as this one in Michigan in the WSJ, that finds it necessary to take money out of savings with prices higher but not reflected in inflation statistics of 3%. One example is higher housing and apartment rental costs with 25% of families having to spend over 50% of their income on home rental leaving little for food and expenses. President Biden has called for limiting price increases on home and apartment rentals to 5%, and Harris has proposed aid for families spending more than 30% of household income on housing costs.
